Get ready with us, as we plant Smooth bitter melon seeds.
Bitter melons are a squash-like delicacy throughout Asia and Africa. They have a tart flavor, and are bitter like the name suggests, but don't let that stop you from turning them into a tasty stew. For these melons are believed to have many medicinal benefits, including digestive relief, disease prevention, and skin and hair health.
Here we are planting them in 2-inch soil blocks. You can make your own soil at home with compost materials, sand, and peat — to trap in moisture for the seed to grow. Soil blocking is a great way to reduce plastic waste because you can put the plants into the soil without using any pots.
Thank you for learning with us today and stay tuned for more!

Thanks to Iowa BIG we now have a Produce Drop-Off Shed! The students spent the spring building a shed for home garden donations. It has a cooling fan and is ready to receive produce. Please share and read more below! #alleviatingfoodinsecurity
Q: What Can I Donate?
A: If you are willing to eat it, you can donate it! We take all produce, fruit, and farm-fresh eggs that are not cracked, damaged, or have broken skin. No dry goods, please!
Q: When Should I Drop Off?
A: As soon as possible after harvest! If more than a few hours, make sure it has been refrigerated! Mondays through Thursdays are best, as your donation will get out the quickest, but the shed is open any day of the week.

BEE DAY! Thanks to our Jr. Beekeepers Isaac and Gavin for helping us home around 27,000 bees on Saturday! They were brave and did a great job getting them situated into the hives. We are new to beekeeping and are excited to learn
Field prep started this week. A huge thank you to Hite Companies for hauling tons (literally) of compost today! Hite volunteers a truck and driver one day each spring to help us amend our larger sites and make sure our Equitable Land Access (ELA) farmers have an ample compost supply on-site. We appreciate Charlie the driver for helping us out today and Hite's ongoing support to improve food access in Linn County. Check them out for your crane, rigging, and hauling needs. #localsupport #alleviatingfoodinsecuritystartshere #fieldprep
