September 16-22 is “Adopt a less-adoptable pet week.” When people want to adopt a dog or cat, they often look for a puppy or kitten. But there are so many other pets sitting in shelters that are looking for a family of their own. Senior pets are a good example of this. They are often loving, loyal companions, and make a great addition to families who don’t have the time and energy to train a new puppy. Pets with special needs are also often overlooked. Those with an illness or physical disability may just need regular medication and routine checkups to keep them healthy. The “bully” dogs also get a bad rap. The American Staffordshire Terrier, Pit bull, and others with bulldog traits are thought of as aggressive, when they are often sweet, friendly, loyal, family members. When you are ready to get a new pet, please consider adopting one of the less adoptable pets from an area shelter or rescue and giving them their furever home.

A dog born with a birth defect, such as a cleft palate, does not usually have a great chance of survival. But with today being Pet Birth Defect Awareness Day, we want to introduce you to a cute little Frenchie who beat the odds! Meet Violet Grace, a one-year-old French bulldog that we’ve watched grow up before our very eyes. Violet was born here at Cedar Animal Hospital a year ago during a C-section. The other puppies were all born healthy, but Violet was not.
“She had a cleft palate, her head was an odd shape, and she weighed in at only three ounces—half the size of the other puppies,” recalled Becky, one of our licensed veterinary technicians, who was part of the team taking care of the puppies. Violet’s prognosis was not good. She would not be able to nurse, and they were worried about hydrocephalus. They thought she might live two weeks at most, and it would be a lot of work to take care of her. The decision was made by the dog’s owner to euthanize, which is often the case in such a situation. But LVT Becky had a special affinity for the tiny Frenchie that fit in the palm of her hand; so, she asked the owner if she could have Violet instead.
“I had to tube feed her every couple of hours for the first four weeks and then every four to five hours as she got older,” explained Becky. In addition, Violet also would eat some hard food. At six months old, her cleft palate was repaired, and she could finally drink on her own. “It was tricky keeping her hydrated before that,” said Becky. She added that Violet did not have hydrocephalus, but it took months for her head to develop normally. She is still smaller than her mom and her siblings, but that doesn’t bother Becky.
Today, Violet is a beautiful, spunky, smart, and active pup living her best life. She survived due to lots of love and dedicated care, and Becky wouldn’t have it any other way.
In the photos: On the left: A tiny Violet fit right in the palm of Becky’s hand; Middle: This little peanut got a lot of steps in at Cedar Animal Hospital; Right: Becky with Violet (on the left) and Violet’s mom (on the right) earlier this summer.

Today we remember the victims and survivors of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and honor the brave men and women who responded to the scene. We’d also like to highlight another group that made a difference to the survivors found at the scene—the search and rescue dogs. Within hours of the bombings, an estimated 300 specially trained dogs arrived at ground zero with their handlers. Their mission was to find survivors buried in the debris. They worked many grueling hours, for days on end. Veterinarians were on hand at ground zero to help take care of the dogs, which were exposed to sharp debris and unhealthy air. In all, there were 21 survivors found. None were found after the first 27 hours. To read more about these brave dogs, go to https://www.911memorial.org/connect/blog/rescue-recovery-20-four-legged-heroes.

Employee burnout is a possibility in any profession and is just as real for veterinary professionals. Dr. Judy Nauta has been passionate about creating a relaxing and artistic atmosphere at Cedar Animal Hospital, and that includes a beautiful outdoor courtyard for employees to sit and eat their lunch or just take a break after a stressful experience. Dr. Judy and Jim, our property care manager, have worked hard to beautify the area with lush green landscaping, colorful flowers, and a sitting area that includes a picnic table and chairs. Our employee oasis is just one of the many beautiful new areas to appreciate at Cedar Animal Hospital!

The second Sunday in September is a day to honor and remember our pets that have passed away. Pets are a special part of our family, and it is hard to lose our animal companions. Let’s remember them today by posting their photo below in the comments, along with their name.
In the photo is Echo Reed, a 10-year-old black Labrador Retriever mix, who loved playing with her toys, especially this huge giraffe! She was a well-loved member of the Reed family, and passed away unexpectedly on July 4, 2023. She is fondly remembered and dearly missed.

September is animal pain awareness month. Animals suffer from pain just like humans do and they are often good at hiding it. Chronic pain can be subtle and masked as “getting old” or “slowing down.” As part of a routine visit, your veterinarian will check for any indications of discomfort. If your pet hasn’t been seen in a while, or you notice some behavioral changes, give us a call at (616) 696-1212 to make an appointment.

This is a reminder on the hottest day of the year, that if the weather is hot for you, it is also hot for your pet. The Michigan Dept. of Agriculture shared some pet safety tips in the graphic to help pets beat the heat. Besides those tips in the graphic, you can also give your pets frozen fruit treats and pet-friendly peanut butter popsicles; wet down your dog's fur with cool water; and cats might like a cool fountain or a dripping faucet. Watch for signs of dehydration such as excessive panting, lethargy, not eating, vomiting/diarrhea, sunken eyes, and bright red gums. If you see these signs, call us at Cedar Animal Hospital at (616) 696-1212.

Is your pet current on their vaccines? There are both core (lifesaving against deadly diseases) and non-core vaccines (lifestyle vaccines to guard against illness) that will help keep your furry friend healthy. They are usually given at 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks, 14-16 weeks, and annually. Talk to your veterinarian at Cedar Animal Hospital about which vaccines make the most sense for your pet. Schedule your appointment today by calling us at (616) 696-1212.

Pets are an important part of our family, and getting a lost pet returned to us is the best feeling in the world. That’s why the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) teamed up to create Check the Chip Day on August 15. On this day, Cedar Animal Hospital would like to remind you to make sure your pet’s microchip is registered, and that their registration information is up-to-date. If your pet needs a microchip, give us a call at (616) 696-1212.

We have a new dog park at Cedar Animal Hospital for our best furry friends! Gentle Way Dog Park, located just opposite Cedar Animal Hospital, is an enclosed area for our patients who may need a little time to run around, go to the bathroom, or just acclimate to being here. There are three sections: a small dog section, a large dog section, and a section in between where owners can sit. We ask that you follow the rules on the sign and clean up after your dog if they use the premises. Waste bags are available onsite. In the photo, this adorable three-month-old lab mix is looking for a spot to go before heading home after her appointment.

Does your pet have any of the following signs of allergic itch?
*Frequent licking, chewing, biting or scratching
*Excessive rolling, rubbing or scooting
*Recurrent ear problems
*Hair loss
*Rash, redness, greasy skin or scabs
August is itchy pet awareness month, and according to Dr. Mefford, one of the amazing veterinarians here at Cedar Animal Hospital, animal owners should not overlook those symptoms. “There could be several reasons for the itchiness. It could be an allergic reaction to something in their environment; it could be their food; or it could be due to parasites such as fleas and ticks,” she explained. “When the animal comes in, we can then diagnose it and find the best treatment for them.”
If your pet has any of the above symptoms, schedule a visit with Cedar Animal Hospital for a skin health check. Call us at (616) 696-1212. Photo courtesy of Zoetis.

It is Veterinary Assistants week, and we are honoring the 20-plus veterinary assistants at Cedar Animal Hospital! They are an important part of a veterinary healthcare team. Vet assistants are responsible for assisting the veterinarian, vet technicians, and other clinic staff with the daily operations of the veterinary practice. This can include both administrative and hands-on work. They clean and set up exam rooms, calm scared animals, restrain animals during exams, feed and weigh animals staying at the hospital, assist vet techs during anesthesia, assist the veterinarian and vet tech in the surgical suites, sterilize equipment, follow up with clients, update patient records, and so much more! We can't tell them enough how much we appreciate them. Please thank a veterinary assistant today!

Today, July 22, is a day that celebrates facilities accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association—and Cedar Animal Hospital is one of them. Only 12 to 15 percent of animal hospitals in the United States and Canada are AAHA-accredited and we are proud to be counted among them. This accreditation means that we adhere to over 900 standards every day to keep your pet happy and healthy. Those exacting standards ensure that your pet receives the best care possible, and we think that’s something worth celebrating! Thank you for choosing our team to provide the best care for your animal!

We would like to introduce you the newest Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Cedar Animal Hospital, Dr. Alyssa Backus. She will be staffing our emergency department three days a week, which means we now have emergency hours daily! Please give her a warm welcome!
"Hey there! I'm Alyssa Backus, a new emergency veterinarian at Cedar Animal Hospital. I earned my Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State in 2021 (Go Green!). I absolutely love my job because I get to see the incredible bond between people and their pets every day. It's amazing how much joy animals bring into our lives!
"In the fast-paced world of emergency veterinary care, my goal is to provide immediate, compassionate care to pets in need. I enjoy working with pet parents to create a health plan that best serves the owner and the pet, ensuring their pets get back to their happy, healthy selves as quickly as possible. When I'm not at the clinic, I enjoy spending quality time with my two very sweet Cavalier King Charles Spaniels."
