Does your pet have bad breath? It’s best not to ignore it. It could signal a serious health problem. That was the case for Chase, a senior indoor cat. He was drooling, and his breath went from bad to worse. When Dr. Judy Nauta first examined him, his gums were in such bad shape she thought Chase might have oral cancer. He was put on hospice care, and monthly Convenia injections (an antibiotic). After several injections, the swelling came down enough to expose a necrotic tooth wrapped in hair that was removed. A CT scan was then done to better evaluate the rest of his jaw and dental structure. Chase was diagnosed with feline lymphocytic plasmocytic stomatitis, which is a severe periodontal disease, and osteomyelitis, a bone infection. With continued Convenia injections, Chase’s mouth soon healed. Today Chase is happy and healthy, still getting a monthly Convenia injection, and regular dental checks at his yearly visits. "Chase is a good example of why getting regular checkups is so important," said Dr. Judy.
Cedar Animal Hospital offers full mouth cleanings, extractions, and now offers state-of-the-art dental CT scans so our doctors can view what’s going on beneath the surface. Plan a visit today to get your pet’s teeth checked out and you’ll be getting sweet kisses again in no time! Just give us a call at (616) 696-1212. Chase is pictured in the photo with Kandace, our lead veterinary assistant, just before receiving his injection.

As a pet owner, you try to do everything you can to keep your furry friend healthy and happy. But did you know that spaying or neutering your pet is one of the most important decisions you can make for their health? Not only will it help reduce the number of unwanted animals populating our shelters, but there are other benefits for your pet as well. The animal typically lives longer, which means more cuddle time with you. Spaying your female pet helps prevent uterine infections, uterine cancer, and breast cancer; neutering your male pet helps prevent testicular cancer and prostate problems. Spaying and neutering also reduces aggression, urine marking, and the roaming of your pet. The staff at Cedar Animal Hospital will take great care of your pet before, during, and after the procedure, and you will have a healthier best friend. Give us a call today to find out more at (616) 696-1212.

We recently found out that the pet microchip registry company Save This Life is out of business. If you are a pet owner that has your pet's chip registered through them, you will need to re-register your chip with a different pet registry company. If you don't, and your pet gets lost, the finder will not be able to locate your contact info through the registry. If you don't remember the name of the company you registered with, get your chip number from your veterinarian. If the chip number starts with 991 or 900164, it's likely a "Save This Life" microchip, and needs to be re-registered. There is a list of pet registries to choose from on the AAHA website at https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/. Scroll down the page to Participating Microchipping and Pet Recovery Services and click on the down arrow to get the list.

January is national walk your dog month. But how do you walk your dog when it is so cold outside? The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says to limit time outside in extremely cold temperatures and take short, frequent walks with your dog rather than long excursions. For small-breed and older dogs, who are more cold-sensitive, consider carrying them outside for bathroom breaks to shorten their time in the cold as much as possible. Follow these tips when taking your dog for a walk in cold weather.
First, you want to dress them for the occasion. An insulated coat or cozy sweater to keep them dry and warm are good choices. Secondly, walk during the sunniest part of the day, to take advantage of the sun’s warming rays. Third, pay attention to their paws. After a walk, wipe their feet, toes and paw pads with a warm, damp cloth to remove ice and salt. Or you can use a pair of booties on their feet. Fourth, watch your pet for signs they are too cold. Shivering, lifting their paw, whining, tiredness—all may signal frostbite or hypothermia. Take them inside, dry them, and wrap them in a warm blanket. Then call Cedar Animal Hospital at (616) 696-1212 or your veterinarian for further instructions. Cedar Animal Hospital is an AAHA-accredited facility.

Did you know that cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia? Just like people, they can be harmed by the winter weather. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. They say that longer-haired and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of the cold but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather. They recommend that if you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide him/her with a warm, solid shelter against wind. Bedding should be thick and dry, and up off the ground. Make sure that they have access to fresh, non-frozen water by changing the water frequently or using a pet-safe, heated water bowl.
