November is Pet Diabetes Month. Did you know that diabetes in dogs and cats can occur at any age? According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), diabetes is more common in older pets, but it can also occur in younger or pregnant pets. The disease is more manageable if it is detected early by your veterinarian. Diabetic pets can lead long and happy lives with proper monitoring, treatment, diet, and exercise. Noticing the early signs of diabetes is important. If you see any of the following signs, please call us at (616) 696-1212.
*Excessive water drinking and increased urination
*Weight loss, even though there may be an increased appetite
*Decreased appetite
*Cloudy eyes (especially in dogs)
*Chronic or recurring infections (including skin infections and urinary infections)

Does your dog have a license? Michigan requires all dogs over the age of four months (16 weeks) to get their rabies vaccine and their county’s dog license annually. We can do that for you right here at Cedar Animal Hospital! And, did you know, that if you live in Kent County and your pet gets lost, they can get home faster with a Kent County’s Smart Dog License? When someone finds your pet, they can scan the QR code on the license with a smartphone, and can see the customized pet profile, which includes who to contact if found and a phone number to reach them. They can also call the phone number on the back of the tag if they don’t have a smart phone. Give us a call today at (616) 696-1212 to set up your dog’s rabies vaccination and get them licensed!

All week we have been honoring and showing appreciation for our Licensed Veterinary Technicians. This article, “She’s just a vet tech” gives some insight on what they do for your animals and for you.

JUST a Vet Tech greeted you at the door with a smiling face, even though we’ve been running around for 11 hours straight. Your pet was assessed by JUST a Vet Tech and, when we noticed he wasn’t stable, JUST a Vet Tech carried your 70 plus pound dog to the back and screamed for a doctor. Once the...

This week is National Veterinary Technicians Week, and we are showing our appreciation for the hard work they all do. But what is a licensed veterinary technician? From the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association): “Veterinary technicians handle many of the same responsibilities that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians; and like veterinarians, they are trained to work with several species of animals. They are trained to obtain and record patient case histories; collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures; provide specialized nursing care; prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery; assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; expose and develop radiographs (X-rays); advise and educate animal owners; supervise and train practice personnel; and perform dental prophylaxes.” Veterinary technicians have 2-4 years of post-high school education and have an associate or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology. They must pass a credentialing examination and keep up-to-date with continuing education to be considered licensed. All veterinary technicians work under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Please thank our licensed veterinary technicians for the great job they do for you and your pet!
We have 19 LVTs. Please click on each photo to see them all!

This week is National Veterinary Technicians Week, and we are showing our appreciation for all the hard work they do here at Cedar Animal Hospital! In the photo are LVTs Becky (left) and Alyssa (right). These two always seem to manage a smile, no matter what kind of a day they are having! We asked them what they like about being a vet tech. Alyssa, our lead hospital technician said, "I enjoy being here for people and their animals, to provide comfort and care in times of distress."
Becky said she likes the variety of animals she sees and the time she gets to spend with them. "I really like the nursing side of it," she said. Tell a vet tech thank you for what they do for you and your animal! 😍
