Here's a little saddle I'm really looking forward to working on. It's a 12.5 inch seat on a William Porter saddle. Ido t know how old it is but, the company closed its doors in 1960. It's in very nice shape and will be for sale by its owner when I'm through cleaning and inspecting it.

This mule saddle came into the shop last week. It doesn't have a lot of time on it but, it's really dirty and very dry. Took 3 applications of neatsfoot oil before I put leather conditioner on it. The beast collar had a nickle plated Conway buckle on it that was very corroded. The corrosion rotted the leather and it broke. That is one of those safety things you need to check often. Stainless steel and brass are my choices for hardware, especially for cinches and any other place that takes a lot of stress and/or abuse.

This nice JJ Maxwell trail saddle came in last week. It's a well loved, daily rider that sees a lot of miles in the summer. While doing my initial safety inspection, I found the latigos were very worn and cracked and the cinch was seriously nasty dirty with some of the nylon rotted and torn. I replaced the latigos and made a new cinch and it's now ready to deliver to its owner, ready for another summer of hard riding.

Before and after pictures of this nice TexTan show saddle. It's in great shape but, was caked in old leather conditioner and dirt. It's been disassembled, inspected, thoroughly cleaned and had all the silver removed and polished before being reassembling. Lots of tedious work in this one but, I'm happy with the results! This saddle is for sale. It has a16" seat and if you're interested, I can put you in touch with the owner.

This nice show saddle came in for inspection and cleaning before being offered for sale. It was caked in dirt and had been treated with something that was thick and sticky like really old honey. Hours of scrubbing with a brush, digging goo out of the tooling and oiling and conditioning later, it's ready for me to clean the silver and reassemble. If you are going to clean your tack, be sure to use high quality products designed for use on leather!

This sweet little Courts Saddlery job came in covered in rodent urine and f***s. I wasn't quite sure how to attack it. I finally just dove in with gloves, hepa mask, 10% bleach solution, a scrub brush and hose. Unfortunately, rodent urine damages leather and there isn't much you can do for the stains besides kill the germs and use an enzyme deodorizer to kill the smell. I replaced the saddle strings, did a thorough safety inspection and spent about 4 hours rehabbing the seat. Suede is very thin and fragile and I had to be careful not to damage it any more than it already is. I'm happy with the results and I think the owner will be, too.

I'm really liking how these 17 strand mohair cinches are turning out. They're simple but elegant. There's been a bit of a learning curve with the roper style English girth. I just need to work out how to make buckle guards for it then, I should be ready to go into production mode.
