The hallway is packed with dogs in temporary crates waiting on kennel space. We are having a $25 adoptions and need your help spreading the word about our adoptable animals!
We are "Code Red" and we want to explain again what this means.
Collin County Animal Services is the stray hold facility for McKinney, Frisco, and all the small towns and unincorporated areas of Collin County. These animals must be held to allow owners time to find them. Animals that are not claimed can go up for adoption and can also go to rescue groups.
Our shelter, as all facilities, has a specific number of kennels for dogs and for cats. The dog kennels are indoor/outdoor and provide a safe and healthy environment for the animals. When shelter intake increases, as typically occurs in the spring and summer, the kennels fill up. Volunteers "pair up" dogs that get along so they can share a kennel and this frees up a kennel for another dog. We also have a volunteer-run Owner Redemption team which works hard to reunite animals with their owners.
When we post on Facebook that we are "full", this means we are running out of kennels and we are concerned that if we don't get adoptions and rescues, we will run out of kennels.
When we post that we are "code red" that means all kennels are full, and dogs are in temporary kennels in the hallway. In this state, the shelter may need to euthanize adoptable dogs or cats because there is no place to put the incoming animals. This is only done as a last resort, and we post in hopes that people will share and let their friends know about the amazing animals at our shelter.
We also typically run specials and do other advertising to try to bring more adopters to the shelter.
On a given day we have no way to predict the number of dogs and cats that will come in to the shelter. This is why we cannot give a specific date that the shelter may need to euthanize - we never know - and we hope it never comes to that.
The shelter does not put time limits on animals. Therefore, the adoption of ANY animal saves a life - any free kennel helps! We never want people to adopt a specific animal because they think that specific animal is in danger - we want people to adopt the animal that is the best fit for their family. Adopting ANY animal gives more time for those that may have special requirements for their family or home.
Thank you all for all your shares - most of our adopters see our animals on Facebook - we cannot express how much we appreciate all you do!
