National Check the Chip Day highlights the importance of regularly updating the information associated with the microchip. Contact details, addresses, and phone numbers can change over time, so it's crucial to verify that the information registered in the database is current. This small act greatly improves the chances of a successful reunion if a pet goes missing.

Ask us how we can check your pet's microchip or get one for them!

We've had one pet in our AHOC family reunited after 11 months (that's right, almost an entire year!) thanks to a microchip!!

We have been lucky this year with our hot weather waiting to show up until the end of summer, BUT the weather now is HOT, HOT, HOT. Just like we’d prefer our A/C and couch to the outdoors this time of year, so do our pets! The difference is, they rely on us to bring them inside when conditions are too serious for them.

Heat stroke is a very real, very serious medical condition that can lead to serious problems, requires emergency veterinary care, and in some cases may even result in death. Signs of heat stroke may be hard to see until it is too late. Panting, lethargy, foaming at the mouth, snorting, or fainting indicate your pet may be in dire need of help. We recommend keeping pets indoors as much as possible, limiting outdoor time to potty time only, and offering plenty of shade and water during the times pets ARE outside, especially during major swings in temperatures.

Risk factors for pets include: brachycephalic dogs (a breed standard for many of our beloved pets like Frenchies, Bostons, Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boxers), Dogs with little body fat or very thick coats who many not be acclimated to our weather patterns this time of year (young dogs like puppies, very old dogs, sight hounds who have trouble regulating body temperatures, huskies, to name a few).

If you suspect your pet is showing any signs of heat stress or stroke DO NOT DELAY! Bring them to the nearest veterinarian IMMEDIATELY for the best chance at helping your pets.

We’ve seen a few cases of canine upper respiratory disease recently! Many of the cases we’ve seen have been confirmed as a bacterial cause called Mycoplasma. Unfortunately, we do not currently have a veterinary vaccine for Mycoplasma. Thankfully, the pets we’ve seen appear to have mild cases and have responded well to appropriate therapy!

This time of year, just like in people, respiratory illness is very common in dogs! See our infographic below for more info about “kennel cough” and call us if your pet needs a check up!

Don’t remember sharing your pot of rice with your pet?

Welp, buckle up, you might be dealing with tapeworms! 🤢

We know! So gross!

We have seen several of these patients lately! Tapeworms can be difficult to diagnose unless they are visualized on your pet, because tapeworm eggs are too heavy to float in most of our f***l testing modalities. This means, even if they are there, we may not see them on your pet’s testing.

Don’t panic! Tapeworms are unlikely to cause serious disease in your pet. Also, treatment is simple and consists of two steps:
1. A dewormer to get rid of those creepy crawlies
2. Flea prevention! Fleas are the vector for the kind of tapeworms we are seeing here. We also have to control flea populations to control the parasites they transmit. It only takes one flea ingested (which means you may not even see them on your pet—especially cats, expert groomers).

Trust us, you’ll want to get rid of them both, and so will your pet.

Call us today to schedule your parasite screening appointment! 🪱

While you might be enjoying your summer break, canine and feline parasites are doing the same! Heartworms are the most deadly of these.

Ask us about heartworm prevention options! We are now excited to announce that we carry Proheart 12 as well as several oral and topical preventatives.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July from AHOC!

Remember to keep an ID on your pups and give them medication if needed!

06/28/2024

Just a quick reminder to all of our wonderful clients: Summer is one of the busiest times of year for all of us!

We know you’re all planning and scheduling pool time and vacations and care for your pets too.

Unfortunately, sometimes that means our schedule gets just as jam packed as yours—We just wanted to remind everyone that if you arrive MORE than 10 minutes late to an appointment, you may be asked to reschedule or to drop your pet off to be worked in between appointments that day.

This doesn’t mean that we don’t want to see you and your pet! If we have the time, we will get you in! And if your pet is very sick, we will do everything we can to accommodate their needs. We just want to make sure that we have the appropriate time to examine, address concerns, complete diagnostics, and treat your pet’s needs the best we can.

Please be patient with us as we try to make sure everyone’s pet gets the optimal time and care to help your pet! We hope everyone is having a great summer and surviving this heat wave!!
