June is such a vibe - we're lighter as we're trade in raincoats and boots for lighter clothes, and our energy is up after spending so much time outdoors and getting that vitamin D.

In our beautiful little “Oasis in the Middle of the City,” we teach partnering with horses through Natural Horsemanship.

We learn about the “nature and psychology of the horse,” which are important parts of safely building relationships with our equine friends.

Here at Sumac Hill Farm, we care for honey bees who produce all-natural, raw local honey.

We coexist with this beautiful natural habitat, preserving it's historical significance through our family's continued commitment to the earth, and all of it's bounties.

The first horse came to Sumac Hill Farm in August of 1967, when Chuck Smedley took his son, Tom to Centennial Race Track, where they bet $2 on a “100 to 1 long shot” and won $200. That evening they looked in the Rocky Mountain News, and there was an Appaloosa mare for sale for $200. Sumac Hill Farm’s herd grew from Princess’ bloodline, one by one, as Chuck traded some of his dental fees for “stud fees” from thoroughbred race horses, that gave us five beautiful foals over 20 years. Sumac Hill Farm’s herd has grown with our new mare Dream in recent years, giving us Chas and Prince William.

Our Riding Philosophy

Our program provides exceptional instruction that prepares our students to become comfortable as riders, and comfortable with horses under a wide range of conditions. Students will learn the basics of a horse's nature and temperament, as well as how to effectively and safely, partner with a horse on the ground and in the saddle. We work with our students to improve their practical knowledge of horses and horse handling, while they learn new riding skills with an emphasis toward learning "feel" for the horse.

We tailor our lessons to the skill level and ability of our riders, therefore whether students are recreational riders or studying to be professionals they will develop a deeper knowledge of horsemanship and riding skills with every lesson.

Lessons will include:

Basic horse care

Haltering your horse

Horsemanship/ horse-care - such as:

Hoof care

Grooming

Ground work with lead rope and working with a horse at liberty

Choosing and caring for tack

Application of halter, saddle, and bridle

Mounting and dismounting

Riding skill geared toward student goals

Recreational trail riding

Dressage

Western dressage
