Lenny! This guy was the sweetest brother I may have ever met besides my own. He would let Carl eat first even though he could have easily nudged his frail body out of the way like the other kitty siblings were considering doing. He knew Carl needed the food more. In the end it was Lenny who passed first, but I would find them snuggling together on the same bed, always affectionate. Lenny was always excited to see me and pumped for any treats or food. He also enjoyed being outside in his sweet fenced in area.

Lessons from Lenny: Kindness is not grandiose gestures of love, but small consistent acts of selflessness.

Murray, whose superhero name would be: “!!Diaper Dog!!” Four exclamation marks definitely necessary. This guy really was a superhero. Clocking in at 17 years of age, Murray was still running down the street on our walks when he got excited, caught a scent he liked, or just wanted to let momentum and gravity carry him back downhill to warmth.

Lessons from Murray: Why walk when you could run? Cheese makes everything better. Sometimes, when you really need more attention than you’ve been given, if you feign discomfort, an empathetic person might stay longer than originally agreed upon 😜

Love you Murray boy 🥰

When a trio becomes a duo there’s just nothing that can replace the void left by the one who’s gone. Like people, I find dogs to be singular in their personalities.

Winston was one of a kind. There’s nothing like a pup in a wheelchair to up the level of fawning and fretting just a notch, endearing him to us even more. Winston needed his bladder expressed every 4 hours. He needed help getting comfy on the couch in his blanket burrito, for which he really wanted Boots’ ‘help’ more than mine and when his wheels would get caught on a chair leg or our stairs it would be three of us jumping into action “Quick help Winston, he’s stuck!”

I’ll never forget the first time he pooped in the house. We were THRILLED! This guy had a cheering squad whereever he rolled and in the end, as all the cliches rang true, we were the ones who were helped the most.

He helped us all be a little more patient, a little more kind, a little more amazed and inspired everyday we were with him - by how resilient and determined dogs like Winston can be in the face of all that’s thrown at them, to press on always toward joy. He certainly brought us a whole heck of a lot of it.

Fun fact: Winston earned the rare and distinguished honor of sleeping between Boots and me…an honor that Boots’ cold dark heart gives out extremely rarely. We miss that warm spot between us, little guy!

Tootsie headed over the rainbow bridge at the beginning of this year. She was rescued from a puppy mill where they think her growth was stunted due to having many litters of puppies at too young of an age.

We only had one fabulous summer weekend with Tootsie but she was memorable. Sweet and grateful Tootsie. Though she had trouble using her hind legs, she had no trouble soaking up love and attention. She still perked up for outdoor sniff sessions and absolutely came alive at the sight and energy of my brother’s poodle puppy.

Lessons from Tootsie: it’s never too late to start the best possible life and the one you deserve. Wring out those simple pleasures to the very end. Sometimes, there’s nothing better than a warm and cozy bed.

Pretty much all of the pups at Grateful Friends Pet Care this year have LOVED Tootsie’s bed, which was generously donated along with a lot of other doggy things by her amazing owners. When you see it featured in lotsss of our photos I hope you think of her as we do 🤗

Ok so instead of the usual… I’d like to honor some incredible pups who passed away this year from sickness, old age, all the things that take our loved ones from us.

Lily was one of the first pups I met who would genuinely smile when you rubbed her belly. Give us a full show of those pearly whites. It was truly contagious. I couldn’t NOT be happy when I was petting Lily because she was overflowing with happiness and joy at any bit of human attention. Her whole body would flop into relaxation and bliss which hilariously made you want to pet her constantly. She loved her humans so hard that she had to have them all to herself and who can blame her 🤷‍♀️…we certainly never did.

My lesson learned from Lily: Find your joy and follow it in your way - pull people along with you. Be yourself. If you’re a boss be one 🤷‍♀️ you don’t have to get along with everybody, in fact only those who give you love, deserve it in return.

Ok so I guess that was a few lessons 🤣 I’m truly so grateful to have know this pup for the short few snuggle fests and adventures we enjoyed together. I wish we’d had more. I’ll never forget her smile and her spirit. I miss her!

I can’t believe I’ve been neglecting my cute photo duties for nearly 4 whole months! Yikes. I’ll do my best to get back on the horn…but no promises 🤣🙃🤦‍♀️

Here is a smattering of the babies we’ve seen over the last 4 months starting with the one and only Emma! This girl can roll and stroll with the big dogs, be a playmate for the littlest and snuggle with all of the humans in between 🥰

Per usual I’ve been neglecting my Instagram duties and am colossally behind 🙃 Bailey and Willow came to us for an afternoon and then an overnight visit.

They love bounding through the woods and are exceptional at recall. Bailey loves terrorizing her sister and getting everyone riled up for play.

It was great to have them back!

Then we had Peanut for nearly 3 weeks! Currently holding the record for longest stay, she loved her daily stream dips and her best buddy Ahava.

Wiggly and anxious when she arrived, she quickly decided that she was a fan of this doggy vacation and took full advantage of all of the cozy nooks and affection on offer.

Then we got to have two weeks with these two! Bella and Bunker, who we affectionately called Bonkers on occasion 🤪 These two were full of love and shenanigans. Bella still sensed traces of toxic masculinity in Boots, despite his best efforts - which was both humbling and appropriate. He is promising to head to therapy… and the good news is, she decided she loved him anyway!

Bonkers could have dug a hole all the way to his mom in Korea and he tried on more than one occasion. Bella loved her daily stream dips.

Both of these wonderful dogs acted like kiddos in a candy shop out in the woods. Like full on sugar high 8 year olds... lost all cognitive functions, including recognition of their own names or the fact that they were still attached to a leash. I’ve never seen such tunnel vision for fun and joy. They brought us a whole lot of laughs and love.

Fun fact: Bella is a former PAWS New England dog herself and is now living the high life after several years barely getting by on the streets of Memphis. We’re grateful she’s safe and happy and now has the best family in the world.

Then I got to stay with these two loves and their kitty companions. We will forever be proud of Addie, the pup who went from fear to love with us, who now soaks up any and all pets we give her and shows visible gratitude and excitement when we visit.

Sometimes the ones who’s love is the hardest to earn show us that hiding under thick skin is a whole lot more love than we could ever imagine or deserve.

Sorry for the lag time folks! We’ve just started a rescue branch to our Grateful Friends Pet Care which has become consuming and let’s face it, I’ve never been good at updates anyway 🤪

But before I get overwhelmed with how far behind I am - next came drop-ins for Murray who I sometimes affectionately call Diaper Dog (sung dramatically for emphasis) because at nearly 17 years old I feel like this little one is truly some kind of super hero 😍

We enjoyed walks, walks and more walks. Sniffs, sniffs and more sniffs! And sometimes, on the extra good days (which felt like all of them this time 🤗) he gets a little bounce in his step.

We have another wonderful foster with PAWS New England who needs a loving home. Meet Ahava, the lovebug with a stunning white coat! Please share far and wide so we can find this girl her perfect home.

This girl was a stray and landed at the Memphis Animal Shelter on the euthanization list. At the last minute, a kind-hearted rescuer found and saved her, and PAWS took over from there. She is now settling into her New England foster home - a very intelligent and adaptable dog that has been a joy to foster!

Ahava is a quick learner who is incredibly responsive and treat motivated. She is extremely sweet and mellow, quite content to nap or chew on an antler as long as she’s in the same room as you. She can be high energy and playful but once she gets her energy out - she’s fine spending the rest of her time as a couch potato.

Ahava is crate trained and house trained and does well on leash and in the car! She’s lived with both kids and dogs. While very affectionate with kiddos and playful with dogs, we feel dog-savvy kids 8 or older would be best for her as well as fellow dog siblings her size or bigger (she’s a big lady who with proper introductions has gotten along great with small dogs too 🙂 She still needs some training in the jumping department but is learning quick. While she’d love a play buddy in home, she would also do just great as your one and only.

She’s a wonderful pup, who after a long journey, deserves her forever!
