With the hot weather expected throughout the state of Oregon this weekend, Rogue Valley Dog Training would like to remind you to be very cautious of your dog's safety. Remember that asphalt can get very hot very quickly and can burn your dog's feet in a matter of seconds. You can check the temperature of the asphalt by placing the back of your hand on the ground and holding it there for 5 seconds. If the ground is too hot for you, it is too hot for your dog. Be sure your dog has constant access to shade and cool spaces and fresh, clean drinking water.

Stay safe and keep cool!

Please join us in congratulating our newest Puppy Advanced Class graduates!

Puppy Advanced Class is offered to those who have completed a Puppy Introduction or Puppy Intermediate Class previously and are ready to advance their dog's socialization. This class is six weeks long and every other week we meet in a new park and practice working through new experiences. We work to expose the dogs to new sights and sounds including: skateboarders, bicyclists, dogs playing in a distance, children, and many more. In this class we work to build the confidence of the pet parents to take their dogs out into new situations and know how to make the dogs feel safe while experiencing new things in a positive way.

If you are interested in Puppy Advanced Class, please contact us at [email protected] or call 541-630-4726. For other class offerings, please visit our website: roguevalleydogs.com/classes

SPOTLIGHT: Enrichment Toy: Petstages Peanut Stuffer Toy

What is it? The Peanut Stuffer Toy is a hollow toy made of hard nylon (similar to a Nylabone) and peanut flavored.

Why I love it: With its peanut flavor and wide opening, this toy is the perfect stuffer toy for dogs who chew through Kongs. This toy can be chewed on as-is, stuffed and even frozen with good stuff inside. My favorite way to make this toy more enriching is by sticking a jerky stick in the smaller hole and letting the dog figure out how to get the stick out.

This toy is available on Chewy.com.

For more enrichment toy spotlights, follow our page or visit our blog: https://roguevalleydogs.com/enrichment-toy-spotlight

As with every form of enrichment, dogs should be monitored at all times while using this toy.

Because it will be front and center, we need to come up with a name for the dog in our logo. Drop your favorite name suggestions in the comments!

SPOTLIGHT: Enrichment Toy of the Week: The Lick Mat

What is it? The Lickmat is a silicone mat with grooves and ridges intended to hold food/treats for a dog to lick up.

Why I love it: The Lick Mat encourages a dog's natural instinct to lick. Licking is a calming mechanism for dogs and can help nervous dogs feel more confident. It also requires them to use their brain to figure out how to get all of the food out of the mat, engaging the part of their brain that they don't use with exercise. The lickmat can also be frozen with food on it once your dog has become familiar with it. This can keep your dog busy for a good amount of time.

Bonus: The Lick Mat is great for dogs with flatter faces who may have a harder time using enrichment toys such as the Kong.

Lick Mats are available in many different shapes, textures, and brands. They can be found on Amazon and Chewy.com.

SPOTLIGHT: Enrichment toy of the week; Kong Wobbler

What is it? The Kong Wobbler is a treat/food dispensing toy made of hard plastic.

Why I love it: Due to the toy's size you can easily fit most-- if not all of, your dog's meal in the toy. The heavy-duty plastic makes this toy nearly-indestructible for the dogs who like to throw their toys around or chew a little. The toy screws apart into two halves making it easy to fill and clean. This will keep your pup busy and thinking for a good chunk of time.

The Kong Wobbler is available at most Pet stores, on Amazon and Chewy.com.

SPOTLIGHT: Enrichment Toy of the week; Busy Buddy Squirrel Dude Treat Dispenser.

What is it? A durable hollow rubber toy that has rubber prongs on the bottom that hold in treats.

Why I love it: The Squirrel Dude is similar to the Kong in both durability and shape, but the opening is partially blocked with rubber. This allows you to fill the inside with dry kibble and treats of various sizes and your dog will have to work to get them out.

SPOTLIGHT: Enrichment Toy of the Week; Outward Hound Hide-a-squirrel.

What is it? The soft hollow log toy holds multiple small squirrel toys inside which are only accessible through the holes in the log. Each little squirrel contains a squeaker guaranteed to hold your dog's attention.

Why I love it: This enrichment toy doesn't require food to keep your dog engaged. While there is nothing wrong with using food for enrichment, some dogs are more motivated by play than food.

Does your dog enjoy de-stuffing every plush toy it gets? This toy can give your dog that sensation of pulling the squeaker out of a toy without actually destroying it. It is easy to stuff the squirrels back into the log after your dog has removed them, making the toy reusable.

Where can I get it? Most major pet retailers carry Outward Hound Toys, You can also find it online at Chewy.com and on Amazon.

For more information on enrichment, check out our Rogue Valley Dog Training Blog at https://roguevalleydogs.com/blog .
