We are starting another “Introduction to K9 Nose Work” course on Sept 25th. The 4-week corse is $100.

Nose Work is appropriate for dogs of any age, breed or size. No prior experience is necessary. This course will tap into your dog's natural desire to hunt and positively reinforce that behavior using high-value treats. Nose Work builds confidence (even for timid dogs), burns mental and physical energy, and allows you to learn just how good your dogs nose really is!

AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Course Starting August 1st at 11:30 am – Now Open for Registration!

Have you ever wondered if your dog could learn to be a little more, well, civilized? Look no further!

Our 6-week AKC Canine Good Citizen course will help you transform your furry friend.

Week 1: Orientation and Basic Manners: We start with a bang—or rather, a sit and stay! This week, we’ll introduce you and your dog to the basics of good manners. Think of it as the doggie version of finishing school, but with more treats and fewer curtsies.

Week 2: The Art of Loose Leash Walking: Does your dog think a walk means dragging you like a sled through the neighborhood? This week we begin teaching the concept of strolling beside you with the grace of a runway model, minus the attitude.

Week 3: Social Butterfly Skills:
Forget awkward encounters. Focus will be on teaching your dog to walk by dogs, humans and more with the poise of a seasoned diplomat.

Week 4: Come When Called: Imagine calling your dog and actually having them come to you, Revolutionary, right?

Week 5: Handling and Grooming Etiquette: Does your dog act like you’re planning a heist every time you try to trim their nails? We cover how to teach them that grooming and handling are not elaborate plots but simply part of their newfound sophisticated lifestyle.

Week 6: Graduation and Mock CGC Test
The final week is where your dog gets to strut their stuff and show off their newfound skills. We’ll conduct a mock CGC test to determine how ready they are for the real thing or what additional skills should be practiced for the prestigious title of Canine Good Citizen. Cue the applause and belly rubs!

Companion Foundations Course Starting August 1st @ 10 am - Now Open for Registration

Register for our 6-week Companion Foundations course to begin your training journey, tackle the essentials for raising a well-mannered dog and transform your rambunctious K9.
Curriculum Highlights:

K9 Body Language & Play Behaviors: Learn to interpret the various signals dogs use to communicate their emotions and intentions. Decode tail wagging, ear positioning, facial expressions and body postures.

Introduction to Markers: Master the art of communication with your dog using markers. The benefits of using markers include accelerated learning, as dogs quickly understand which behaviors are being rewarded and reduce confusion as the markers provide clear and consistent feedback to your K9.

Shaping for Positions: Mold your dog's posture like a pro. Perfect those sits, downs, and stays with techniques that make learning fun and effective.

Engagement & Productive Play: Discover the secrets to keeping your dog’s attention while having fun. Turn every playtime into a productive session that reinforces positive behaviors.
Impulse Control for Biting/Mouthing: Curb those enthusiastic nibbles with impulse control techniques.

Appropriate Greeting & Social Skills: Teach your pup the dos and don’ts of doggy diplomacy. No more jumping on guests—just polite tail wags and perfect paw shakes.

Crate Games: Make the crate your dog's favorite place to be. Turn crate training into a game your pup will love, transforming confinement into cozy contentment.

Love your Collar/Leash/Harness: Help your dog see their gear as the gateway to adventure, not a necessary evil. Your dog will love to “Gear Up”.

Polite Door Entrances/Exits: Say goodbye to door-dashing and hello to polite entrances and exits. Your dog can learn to wait patiently and enter or exit gracefully.

Most of you know already, but just a reminder, the asphalt is hot! Please do not walk your dogs across it!

We are lucky, however, to have shade close to the building. We encourage you if possible to back into the shade to unload your dogs for class 🙂 It is much cooler there without the direct sun.

If you need any assistance carrying things or getting into the crate room safely, please let your instructor know and we will help you.

Today was a fantastic example of a dog saying I can’t do what you asking me to do right now and a fantastic example of how the trial environment alone can change everything for the dog. Just 3 weeks ago Ice did the snif-n-go, which had even more challenging searches, nailing almost 100% of the searches. Hell, he even nailed the search that hade 3 official hides mixed between hides of cheddar cheese or figs and he has never been exposed to food distractors before.

Today was a similar setup to the snif-n-go in that we had a long drive the day before, an overnight hotel stay, and a fairly laid back/relaxed parking area as we waited our turn to search. In fact we were even in the same spot in the line up as we were at the snif-n-go. So what was different about today? Yes there were a few more people in the search area but even before getting to the area I knew, without a doubt, the search was going to likely be a problem, and I was right.

We will never truly know what the dogs sense/experience “in the air” at a trial but it being an “official trial day” absolutely makes a difference!! You can try to mimic it but you never truly can. It is a fact, and you just have to have patience and work thru it.

As soon as I asked Ice to do the warm up boxes for our first search today, I knew we were in trouble! He would not engage or even consider tying to play the game. Not much I could do however, as it was time for our official run time. As anticipated the run was not successful. He was clearly telling me he could not play the game at this time.

Our Second run, started the same way at the warm up boxes, and the official search was only slightly better (but just barely), and in the last 5 secs we managed to pull off an astonishing “yes”.

For the Third and final run of the day, something changed! It was a very different story at the warm up boxes. He played the game and when I prevented a second warm up box run, he pulled in the direction of the first warm up box and barked in frustration that I was not letting him do it again. So I let him, and I knew this time he was ready to do his job.

Sure enough, on the official run, right off the bat he got down to business, checked each box he came to, and nailed it lickity split!

Videos of each run for the learning experience to go along with my story. Also, you will notice on the first and second runs, I let him (several times) go way out of the search area, hoping he would catch odor, settle in, or maybe it would act as a reset - although neither tactic work. Enjoy.
