Millions of Americans have been celebrating clean air, land, and water on Earth Day since 1970. It's a great time for us to evaluate our environmental impact...and your pet's environmental pawprint. 🐾

Here are some ways you and your pet can cut down on waste and do your part:

· Local shelters often have a need for household items such as old towels and bedding. Make a donation before discarding these items in the trash.

· Put away the bleach and clean green! Instead of reaching for toxic chemicals, go for eco-friendly alternatives like vinegar, baking soda or lemon to clean pet messes.

· Choose biodegradable doggie bags over plastic. Picking up your pet's waste not only keeps green spaces looking fresh, but it's also essential to keeping the community at large healthy.

Every little step can make a big difference! Get out there and enjoy the day!

Easter is right around the corner and while most pet owners may be weary of their dogs getting into chocolate hidden in unfound Easter eggs in their yard, cat owners should also be reminded that Easter lilies can be terribly poisonous to their feline friends.
·
The entire lily plant, including the leaves, flower, and pollen is poisonous to them. Even if it's just a few grains of pollen licked from their coats or a couple of bites of some leaves, cats can suffer acute kidney failure within a short period of time.
·
Shortly after a cat eats an Easter lily (or really any dangerous lily), it will start vomiting. Furthermore, if your cat has consumed a lily, it can suffer from lack of appetite, diarrhea, dehydration, and lethargy.
·
While beautiful, please keep your Easter lilies out of reach of your pets. If you think your cat has consumed an Easter lily, please reach out to us immediately at (315) 668-7387.

This week we're recognizing Dog Bite Prevention Week.

Did you know that dog bites most commonly occur in children and most injuries happen during the summer months? The exact reason for these phenomena is unknown, but perhaps because children and dogs are frequently together outdoors in the warmer months or maybe dogs are cranky, just like the rest of us when the weather is hot and sticky.

Another reason dogs may bite could include improper care and/or lack of socialization. It's important to keep both dogs and humans safe by preventing bites where possible. What can you do?

· Don't poke, pinch, hit or tease a dog

· Never approach a dog who is unknown or without an owner

· Always ask permission before petting a dog

· Never approach a dog who is eating, sleeping, or nursing puppies

· Don't leave babies or small children alone with a dog

· Teach children to treat dogs with respect and not to engage in aggressive play

· Socialize pets as young puppies so they're at ease around other people and animals.

Finally, since sick or injured dogs are more likely to bite, regular veterinary care is essential. Don't hesitate to call us at (315) 668-7387 if you feel something is off with your pup.

It's National Siamese Cat Day, so here's a fun fact about these fancy felines: the coat on a Siamese cat is affected by the temperature.
·
It's true - their distinct markings are determined by the temperature in addition to their inherited genes. Siamese kittens are born entirely white and don't develop their signature coloring until they're around four weeks old. Their coat pattern is dictated by temperature-based pigments. The higher temperature of their torso makes that fur a lighter color, whereas their colder extremities like their paws, nose, and ears take on a darker color.

04/02/2025

Did you know that April is National Heartworm Awareness Month? How much do you know about this potentially deadly parasite? Here are a few things important for you to remember:

· Heartworms are parasites that are transmitted by mosquitoes that have fed on an infected animal. They then transmit the parasite to an uninfected animal that it subsequently bites. Heartworm infections can be deadly in some cases, but it is treatable. The best approach to treating heartworm, however, is prevention.

· The disease caused by these parasites can result in severe lung disease, heart failure, organ damage, and death. While it's most prevalent in dogs, it can also be found in cats, ferrets, and other wildlife like coyote and wolves.

· At early onset, your pet may be asymptomatic, but as it progresses, your pet may experience symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, persistent cough, difficulty walking, and abdominal bloating.

· The best way to ensure your pet stays healthy is by getting them tested for heartworm annually and keeping them current on preventative medications.

We're all in this together - give us a call today at (315) 668-7387 to discuss your pet's heartworm prevention options. Let's keep our pets healthy!

Now that spring is in the air, so is that all too familiar smell...skunk.
·
Skunks can spray 7-15 feet and even further if it's windy. Keep your animals far away if you want to avoid those late night baths.
·
Skunks are also one of the most common sources of exposure to rabies in pets along with bats and raccoons, so please make sure your furry family members are up to date on their rabies vaccinations. If you're unsure, please feel free to give us a call at (315) 668-7387.
