I am so happy with this gentle giant, he may have earned the nickname Duke of Derp. He’s gotten so much more poised and relaxed, and is absolutely the most cuddly stallion I have ever met.
I haven’t put anything on his back for most of six months (where did that time go?!) and this is how he was yesterday. He honestly kept looking at me like “would you just do the thing already? 🙄”

This was such a cool experience!
I was doing some massage with derp and he was showing some signs that he wanted to lay down, pawing and walking in circles, so I went out into the paddock. He still wanted to lay down but wasn’t finding a spot he liked. I wondered what he would do if I asked him to lay down, and he laid right down.

Why would I get on a just started horse, who tends to get nervous and buck, bareback with a bit-less bridle?
Well because that’s how he’s most comfortable, and the horses comfort is paramount to their learning. A relaxed horse will be more willing to accept aids and less likely to panic when they’re faced with a question they’ve never been asked before or a startle. This horse in particular, my stallion Duplikated Edition, is very sensitive and requires a lot of reassurance. As a result he is much more comfortable without a saddle as he can truly feel me and my level of tension and anxiety without the interference of a saddle. He also draws a lot of his confidence from his handler, which made the transition from me being on the ground and supporting him to on his back where he can’t always see me directly. A direct connection to him changes this dramatically.
In short, a comfortable horse is a happy horse.

It might not seem like much but the little bit of forward motion here is absolutely massive progress for this big Derp! I’m so proud of him and how far he’s come in the last month.

Tilly’s first ride in her new home went perfectly!
Last year baths were the end of the world! Now he’ll stand with the rope over his back and some gentle reminders to please keep his feet still
Laying down has become part of our routine as a sort of trust building exercise
Line driving is going so well I’ll be getting back on him soon
