It’s going to be a hot week. Keep your hounds safe in the heat.
HEATSTROKE ALERT FOR GREYHOUNDS
Summer is here and that means it’s time to get serious about heat safety!
Greyhounds are four times more likely to suffer from heatstroke than other breeds. With their thin skin and low body fat, they overheat FAST and cool down slowly.
Too hot to walk? Use this guide:
• Over 70°F – stay cautious
• Over 78°F – dangerous
• Over 86°F – risk to both hounds and humans
• If you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for paws!
Know the signs of heatstroke:
• Rapid panting
• Bright red or pale gums
• Weakness or collapse
• Vomiting
• Black tarry diarrhea
• Black urine
• Glazed or unresponsive eyes
If it happens:
• Move to shade or indoors
• Offer cool (not cold) water
• Use cool damp towels on belly, paws, and underarms
• Use a fan
• Call your vet. This IS an emergency and it IS life and death.
Prevention is key:
• Walk early or late
• Use fans, cool coats & mats
• Keep fresh water available
• Skip the walk if it’s too hot!
No greyhound has ever died from missing a walk—but many have from going on one.
Keep your 45mph couch potatoes safe this summer!
