✨Happy Opposite Day!✨
Let’s celebrate by diving into some interesting medical opposites between our canine and feline friends. 🐕🐱

🦴 Dogs:
• Activity & Exercise: Dogs are naturally more social and active, which makes them more prone to joint problems. Studies show that over 20% of dogs are affected by arthritis, especially in larger breeds. 🏃‍♂️
• Breed-Specific Conditions: For example, Boxers are at risk for cancer—studies show they are more likely to develop tumors than other breeds. Different breeds are genetically predisposed to specific conditions. For example, Bulldogs are prone to respiratory issues due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure. Larger dog breeds, like Great Danes, are more susceptible to heart disease, with conditions like dilated cardiomyopathy being more common.
• Canine Dementia: Canines are also prone to Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS), which is similar to Alzheimer’s in humans. Studies suggest that 14% of dogs over 8 years old show signs of cognitive dysfunction, such as confusion, disorientation, and disrupted sleep patterns. 🧠

🐾 Cats:
• Silent Illnesses: Unlike dogs, cats are often "stoic" when it comes to hiding pain or illness. For example, chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects around 30-40% of cats over 7 years old, but symptoms often don’t appear until the disease is advanced. Early detection through routine vet visits is key!🐱
• Metabolic Differences: Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they rely on meat-based proteins for essential nutrients. Without this, they can develop serious issues like hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), especially if they experience rapid weight loss or fasting.
• Dental Health: While dogs commonly suffer from tartar buildup and periodontal disease, cats are more likely to develop gingivitis or resorptive lesions, where the teeth start to break down from the inside out, affecting over 70% of cats over 3 years old. 🦷
Even though dogs and cats are both pets, their medical needs are like night and day! 🌓 That’s why regular vet check-ups are so important for each species—they need care that's as unique as they are!

🤩 Happy National Sticker Day! 🤩

All of us at the clinic love to express ourselves with fun and meaningful stickers—both for our pets and for our veterinary team! 🐾✨

Did you know? Stickers are a great way to show off your personality, support causes, and even remind us of important details when it comes to our pets’ health. Whether it’s a cute “Adopt, Don’t Shop” sticker or one of our team members’ favorite quirky decals on their water bottles or laptops, we love using stickers to add a little flair to our day! 🎨❤️

How stickers are a part of our veterinary world:

1. Health Reminders: Our team uses stickers on medication and care plans to ensure your pets receive the best care.

2. Expressing Personality: From "Vet Tech Life" to “ #1 Pet Lover," our staff proudly wears their stickers to share their love for animals and veterinary care.

3. Awareness and Advocacy: Many of us use stickers to raise awareness about important pet health issues and animal welfare.

Do you have any fun or meaningful pet stickers? Share them with us! We’d love to see how you celebrate your love for animals. In the meantime, enjoy some of our staff's stickers that they love to show off at work 🐕🐈💖

🐈‍⬛ “The Cat’s Meow! Tip of the week 🐈

Harvey here, hanging out with Dr. Lubinger… both are ready to bring you the tip of the week 🐾

Did you know cats can be very picky about their litter boxes? Keep your feline friend's box clean and in a quiet, low-traffic area to help avoid any “potty problems.” Ideally, you should scoop it daily and change the litter regularly to keep your kitty happy and healthy! 🐾

🐾 Some of you may remember when we introduced little Huey at just 8 weeks old — and now, at 16 weeks, he’s growing up fast! So we figured it was time for an update, and who doesn’t love golden puppies. He was recently in to see Dr. Binder for his 3rd puppy visit to finish out his vaccine series. He’s learning new tricks, making plenty of new friends, and, of course, getting more handsome by the day. Stay tuned for more puppy adventures as he continues to grow! 🐕💚

🚶‍♂️🐾 January is Walk Your Pet Month! 🐾🚶‍♀️

The new year is the perfect time to get moving with your furry friends! Regular walks aren’t just fun—they’re a great way to keep your pet healthy, happy, and active.

Here are a few benefits of walking your dog (or cat! Yes, cats can be harnessed trained too!) this month:

1. Physical Health: Helps maintain a healthy weight, improves cardiovascular health, and strengthens muscles.
2. Mental Stimulation: New sights 👀, smells 👃, and sounds 👂 provide mental enrichment.
3. Bonding 💞 Time: Quality time together strengthens your relationship with your pet.
4. Behavior Benefits: Regular exercise can help reduce anxiety, stress, and destructive behavior.

Tips for a successful walk:

1. Start with shorter walks and gradually increase the distance.
2. Use a proper leash and harness for comfort and safety.
3. Don’t forget water breaks—your pet gets thirsty, too!

Important Safety Tip: When walking your pet, avoid retractable leashes. While they may seem convenient, they can be dangerous for both you and your pet. Retractable leashes can snap back unexpectedly, cause sudden pulling, and make it harder to maintain control in potentially risky situations. Stick to a standard, non-retractable leash for better control and safety.

If you have any concerns about your pet’s health or need advice on starting a walking routine, don’t hesitate to reach out. Our team is here to help! 🐕🐈❤️
Happy walking, and here’s to a healthy, active year for both you and your pets!

Chagrin Animal Clinic

The Chagrin Animal Clinic has been serving the Chagrin Valley area since 1987.

The clinic was born on March 1, 1987, when Dr. Eldridge purchased the practice of retiring veterinarian, Don Weibel. The practice became the Chagrin Animal Clinic and continued to function in the original building on Chagrin Road for twenty years.

In August, 2007, the clinic was moved into a new state of the art building at 16680 West Park Circle Drive in Chagrin Falls (Bainbridge).
