The Spot On! team had the honor of watching one of our clients perform in a school play. The play is Annie Jr and Annie is played by the adorable Abby with Sandy the Golden Retriever who is a little over 1 year old. Sandy completed training with us in November and her owners worked hard to have Sandy in this play and did a phenomenal job with her. Huge thanks to Jamie & Scott along with Abby's parents for allowing us to share this with you. They did an amazing job and we couldn't be more proud.

🐾 It is just as important to train with distractions as it is without! By training your pup with distractions around, you are building a stronger bond with your pup as well as helping them to understand your expectations for them in different situations. We train our students inside and outside of the facility as well as in public, setting each pup up for success at home! 🐾

🐕 In this clip one our trainers, Kenya, is working with 5 month old Sienna on learning a “down”. During training, we like to keep things fun for both the dogs and ourselves, incorporating games and different rewards. Here, you will see after Sienna performs a down correctly, Kenya throws a treat for her to chase and eat then recalls her using the “come” command, and repeats the process for repetition. This is a fun game to play with your pup to tap into their prey drive, chasing and eating the treat, and to strengthen their recall. You can even add different variations such as making your pup wait to chase down the reward, adding different commands in before the reward, recalling before they get to the reward and so on. Make training fun and always remember to practice!! 🐕

🐾 Building engagement while working with your pup is another extremely important part of training. If there is no engagement from the dog towards you, the dog will choose to do anything and everything except what you ask. Without engaging with you, the dog will instead choose to engage with the distractions in their surroundings. By making yourself more rewarding than the distractions at hand, overtime your dog will learn to seek attention from you rather than the surroundings. In the video example, our trainer (Brenna) is working the FIRST session with Rocco. Rocco is a 5 month old, Golden Retriever. As a puppy, focusing can be a challenge! Always remember that patience is key when working with puppies! 🐾

🐾 There are different ways to exercise your pup! Listed below are different forms and examples of exercise and stimulation for your furry kiddos. Every pup has different exercise needs. These needs vary breed to breed and dog to dog. To figure out what your dog truly needs, take a closer look into how they act on a daily basis. For example, if you take your dog on multiple walks a day and your dog still has endless energy, try adding some mental enrichment into your dogs routine. When we see energetic dogs, we are used to thinking that they need to physically release their energy, but this isn’t always the case. Adding a good mix of mental and physical exercise into your dogs routine can help to reduce anxious destructive behaviors as well as help your dog to relax. Pent up energy in dogs can lead to behaviors such as, but not limited to; excessive panting without exercise, jumping, excessive vocalization, mouthy, teeth chattering, spinning/chasing tail, and pacing. Physically over exercising a dog can also lead to these behaviors by causing the dog to be in a constant state of arousal, unable to calm their mental state. A highly aroused dog will have an elevated heart rate, blood pressure and breathing pattern. A highly aroused dog may also excessively drool, have poor impulse control, as well as display dilated pupils. Teaching your pup how to calm themselves and decompress after exercise is just as important to your dogs health as the exercise itself. 🐾

🦴 Fading rewards is essential to having your dog listen to you in any circumstances. The best part is that you don’t have to FULLY take it away! Building up more time and commands between rewards helps to build your dogs drive for the reward. Once your dog knows a command, you can fade the reward from right after the action to at the release, from at the release to after 2 commands, and so on. The more you practice, the better you will be as a handler and the better your dog will be. Your dog is a direct reflection of you as a handler. Always remember that dog training is for life. Just as we are always learning, so are our dogs. Putting in as little as 15-20 minutes of training a day can vastly improve your dogs obedience over time! Training can also be incorporated into our daily lives. Look below for some real life examples of training! 🦴

🐶 During training, we love to test the dogs with different levels of distractions to prepare them for real-world situations. One of the ways we practice a heel is by walking the dog next to the dogs lined up on the wall, with the expectation that they will continue walking next to us. After many reps, some may need more than others, the dogs will be able to walk right past their friends without straying away from their handler! Watch our video to see us in action with handsome little Charlie! 🐶

🦴 One of the things we teach here at Spot On is a sit with an implied stay. The video below shows our lead trainer, Maria, working Louie a Doberman, on a sit stay. Not only does a sit stay teach your dog to stay seated until released, but it also teaches them impulse control. Impulse control can be incredibly helpful in situations where it may be harder to control your dog; over excitement, dropped food, open doors/gates, etc. 🦴

💅🏼🐾 Nail Trims 🐾💅🏼
🐶 Nail trims can be extremely stressful for some dogs and may cause them to react out of fear (biting, snapping, growling, whining, etc.). Here at Spot On! we go the extra mile to make sure all of the pups are as comfortable as possible and learn that nail trims aren’t so bad after all! Cowboy Cash, featured in the video, HATED his nails being cut when he first came to us. He would try in every way possible to keep anyone from cutting his nails and would have to be muzzled. Here is a recent video of him doing amazing for his nail trim! We took the time and had the patience to work with him, until he became comfortable enough to let us trim his nails without a muzzle! 🐶
🎾🐶 Here at Spot On we also incorporate play with training! We like to take the dogs one on one with our trainers and practice impulse control while playing fetch with our toy motivated students!🐶🎾

🦴🐕Group Play Time🐕🦴
🐾 It isn’t often that we are able to play a group this big, but we take every opportunity we can! We closely monitor each dog to make sure everyone is getting along and having a great time! These group play sessions help the dogs to decompress and just be a dog, while learning proper play and other socialization skills after a long day of training! 🐾

🐕 Heel 🐕
🐾 One of the obedience commands we teach at Spot On! is Heel! The heel command consists of the dog being able to walk with a loose leash at your side without pulling in front of, or behind you. Having your pup know a heel not only provides you with more control over your dog, but also provides mental exercise for your dog! Keeping your dog in a heel, by your side, while on a walk will help keep him/her out of harms way. Each dog receives 2 field trips, outdoors to the local parks or pet stores, to help solidify their heel around distractions. The heel command requires a lot of impulse control and focus to keep them next to you, in the heel position. The physical position of the dog reflects the mental position, meaning that if your dog is next to you, they are more likely to pay attention to you rather than their surroundings. Having your dog heel next to you, ignoring distractions, will also have a positive impact on your relationship! A heel will help give your dog the direction and communication they need while in a world full of distractions. 🐾

🐕🦴Dog Confidence!🦴🐕
Dogs build confidence by experiencing things they aren’t used to. One of the many ways we help our student pups build confidence is by using the treadmill! Not only does this help burn excess energy, it helps build their confidence. The “ground” moving underneath their feet is scary for most dogs because they have never experienced that before. Once they begin walking, they realize it isn’t so bad and are able to relax. Some dogs take longer and more sessions and socialization to the treadmill than others. This also goes for unstable and higher objects you may place your dog on. There are opportunities to build your dogs confidence everywhere you go!
