Hi friends! Catherine here with a very vulnerable and moving post about Jax, a patient who we have never successfully been able to perform a full comprehensive exam or provide services other than vaccinations.
I’ve worked in vet med for almost 9 years and have never had a successful “fear free” experience. It always ended the same; extreme stress for the animal, fear biting, and an understandably upset owner that we were not able to render services.
Since moving to our Chalmette clinic and being under new management we have tried “fear free” visits again, and I’ll be honest I was very skeptical it would end the same way. Thankfully I have been proven wrong! Jax has come to Chalmette several times for issues, however he is so incredibly scared we’ve never been able to completely solve his issues. With the help of Dr. Saunders, Maggie, and dad we were able to medicate Jax for his MOST calming visit we’ve ever had!
At his last visit I was able to finally clean his ears, and notice how there is no restraint happening! He even pawed at my lap for me to continue helping him! Fear free does not mean that we don’t use “party hats” but instead it meant I sat on the floor and sang to Jax the whole time and gave him words of encouragement!
While we weren’t able to tackle all of his issues at this visit, we are counting this one as a victory. If we recommend calming medication for your pet, please know we have their best interest in our minds and hearts. We want everyone, you the owner included, to have a stress free visit.
If you have a fearful animal and want to know more, give our clinic a call and we’d be more than happy to explain our protocol to you 🤍
