❄️ These cold temperatures we are recently experiencing have not slowed the 2025 calving season down!

Here are some calving area prep tips to ensure healthy cows and calves-

▪️Walk through facilities and pressure or steam wash any hard surfaces.
▪️Clean out and re-bed pens daily with fresh dry bedding to decrease pathogen build up.
▪️With cold temperatures make sure calving areas are bedded and set up to break wind and cold conditions.
▪️Prepare an area in the barn to warm up calves. Have colostrum and towels ready to speed up drying calves so to avoid hypothermia.

As we enter this calving season, make sure you are evaluating cows body condition score (BCS) as this not only affects cow performance during calving but calf vigor and health as well.

Evaluating BCS now in late gestation can allow younger females and thin cows to be sorted and fed for more weight gain prior to parturition. Ideally a good BCS is 5-6 at calving so they can start the breeding season in good condition as well. Cows that are under a 4 at calving will have longer postpartum intervals and lower reproductive performance at breeding.

Work with your nutritionist to adjust rations and improve body condition now before the extra nutritional demands of lactation make it more challenging to add weight economically!

Body Condition Score (BCS) is a useful tool for assessing the energy status of an animal. BCS should be assessed at calving, mid-lactation and mid-late gestation.

‼️Let’s talk calving tips‼️

Here are somethings to prep and have ready!

Supplies to have on hand:
⚪️Calving Chains and Handles
⚪️OB Sleeves
⚪️Clean buckets with Water and Disinfectant
⚪️Syringes and needles to administer antibiotics as needed
⚪️Sedative
⚪️Colostrum milk replacer

Ensure calving area is clean and bedded well. Prepare a head gate and short alleyway to restrain a cow and pull calves if needed. Make sure there is udder access to assist calves with suckling. In addition, have a plan to quickly release cow if she struggles to balance or falls.
