We at Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter - CVAS hope that all animals stay safe this Holiday Season! But, winter is the time of year when animal poison control centers across the country receive even more calls than normal. Please remember these common household holiday toxins that could be hazardous to pets:
Medications - Pets may access medications brought by visitors, they are naturally curious and may check out suitcases or pill containers. Visitors may want to store medications in a closed cabinet, out of reach and take meds in a room with the door closed to avoid dropped pills.
Chocolate - This is the top cause of pet poisonings during Christmas, often from wrapped gifts. Pets may shred wrapping paper. And with higher cocoa content in many chocolates, even small amounts can be harmful.
Snow Globes - A holiday favorite but some contain ethylene glycol, so it’s important to be aware of this as a possible holiday risk.
Alcohol & Yeast Dough - Eggnog and other holiday drinks can be attractive (and dangerous) to pets. They will often vomit alcohol after ingestion, but alcohol is also absorbed quickly. Rising yeast dough for breads and rolls can cause bloating and complications from secondary alcohol production (yeast fermentation).
Ice Melts - Colder weather may mean ice and snow are in the forecast. Ice melts help manage freezing precipitation but may cause complications.
if you ever suspect your pet has ingested something potentially toxic, contact your local veterinarian immediately to determine next steps!

Justice is a happy, playful guy that arrived as a stray. He is a border collie and will need someone that has experience with his breed. He is an active guy that needs a job to do! Justice did well with the tester cat here at the shelter and does not seem to mind the other dogs. Justice may be too much for small children so a home with older children would be best. Justice did test positive for lyme and has been on an antibiotic to treat it. Justice would love to find his loving forever home soon! He has been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, Heartworm/lyme tested, and microchipped since his arrival at the shelter.

27 pounds (with room to gain)
Percival, lovingly known as Percy here at the shelter arrived as a stray that no one ever came for. He is around 3 years old and weighs in at 27 pounds, he was thin when he arrived and is still currently gaining. He does not seem to mind being around other dogs. He did well with the tester cat here at the shelter and seems to know that cats like to have their space. Percy is very food motivated and may take treats a little roughly, due to this a home with older children would be best for Percy. He did test positive for lyme and anaplasmosis but is currently on antibiotics to treat these. Percy would love to find out what a loving forever home is all about soon! He has been neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, Heartworm/lyme tested, and microchipped since his arrival at the shelter.

Maggie
1 year old
Redbone Coonhound
Spayed Female
44 pounds
Maggie was surrendered to the shelter when she kept running off. Her previous owners had an inground fence system, but Maggie would just ignore the boundary lines and the collar. Maggie will need someone with hound experience and knows that once a hound gets a scent, they like they will follow it no matter what. A fenced yard with supervision or leash walking would be best for this sweet hound! Maggie loves attention and enjoys being with you! Per her previous owner Maggie did get along with the cat in the home. She would love to have a second chance at a loving forever home soon! She has been spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, Heartworm/lyme tested, and microchipped since her arrival at the shelter.
