Making up some trapping kits and thought I'd share how we use the items:
Zip-ties and carabiners - secure traps so we don't lose a cat away from it's home base
Paper bowls/food - trapping enticement and feeding while in recovery
Plastic silverware - attempting to keep hands clean while sleeping with stinky bait šŸ˜‚ or feeding colonies
Sharpie/tape - identifying animals in traps so they aren't mixed up during big TNR days
Can opener - we'll take all donated food/bait - no pop-tab needed

***ADOPTION PENDING***
Poor, sweet Frank is sad. Weā€™ve posted him at least a dozen times over the past few months and heā€™s never received a single adoption application. Can you please help him find his happily-ever-after by sharing this post?

Frank is a special kitty who needs a special home. This handsome, blue-eyed boy (who is NOT deaf, by the way) is about two years old. He came to us from one of the most overcrowded shelters in metro Atlanta. The staff reached out to us because Frank was in dire need of both medical treatment and TLC. He was filthy, flea-ridden and had what at first appeared to be a large mass inside his mouth. His mouth was gaping open, making it difficult for him to eat and he was pretty miserable. After closer examination, our vet determined that Frankā€™s problem was actually not a mass but a degloving injury where his bottom lip had somehow been peeled away from his gums. The injury was surgically repaired and Frank is looking and feeling much better now.

Frank has one other medical issue that seems like a big deal but itā€™s really not. He tested positive for FIV. This article from the Cornell Veterinary School explains more about FIV: https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feline-immunodeficiency-virus-fiv. Frank is quite healthy overall and he very well may live a normal lifespan. He is a magnificent boy and we are hoping that someone will see past his slightly imperfect features and appreciate the many wonderful qualities he exhibits. Frank is one of the most mellow cats weā€™ve ever cared for. He is relaxed and easygoing and highly social. He isnā€™t phased by dogs, large or small. We have not exposed him to other kitties yet but he would likely get along with other cats just fine. Frank is an incredible boy and someone is going to enjoy his company so much.

You can apply to adopt Frank at the link in the comments below. Please share this post if you cannot adopt him yourself. Letā€™s get this awesome kitty the forever home he deserves. šŸ’™

Gomez and Aunt Fester would love to come live with you for a long time!

Did you know that black cats are generally healthier than other cats, and may actually live longer? In the early 2000ā€™s, Scientists at the National Institutes of Health discovered that the genetic mutations that give black cats their black fur also protects them from certain diseases, like feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). This doesnā€™t mean mew shouldnā€™t take precautions around cats with FIV, though. While the rates of contraction are considerably lower than with their lighter cousins, black cats can still get it.

This is why we adopt kittens out in pairs or to homes with a young and/or playful cat.

This is why we adopt kittens out in pairs or to homes with a young and/or playful cat.

I always say: One kitten is half a kitten. Two kittens are a whole!

Often, first-time adopters feel overwhelmed by the idea of bringing home a pair, and believe it will be easier to adopt a solo kittenā€¦only to realize later that they wish theyā€™d adopted a duo! As someone who reads a lot of adoption applications, trust me: a lot of solo-kitten adopters end up wanting a second kitten after all.

Paired adoptions make me happy, but I do lots of solo kitten adoptions too, as long as the adopter has another young cat in the home to be the kittenā€™s friend. Our kittens adjust beautifully to homes with young, playful cats! Interestingly enough, we didnā€™t have any paired adoption applicants for my current crew of 4ā€¦but we had several applications from people who had recently adopted a solo kitten and regretted not adopting a second!

One adopter told me that sheā€™d adopted a kitten just days earlier, then went to the vet and was told ā€œyou need to get a second kitten,ā€ so she applied with Orphan Kitten Club for a little friend. (LOVE that adviceā€”thank you, vet!)

I share this to say that if youā€™re a first-time adopter considering a solo kitten, consider adopting a pair. I promise Iā€™m not just trying to upsell you on kittens! Two kittens will keep each other entertained, learn new skills from one another, take out their energy on one another, and enrich each othersā€™ lives. And when you adopt a pair of young friends or littermates, theyā€™ll be bonded immediately!

If youā€™ve recently adopted a solo kitten and have no other cats at home, itā€™s not too late to get them a little buddy to bond with for life. Every time an adopter applies to pair one of our kittens with their new kitten, I tell them: you are making a very smart decision!

Read my article at KittenLady.org/twokittens to learn why experts agree: two kittens are better than one. šŸ±šŸ±
