DeKalb County Animal Services is an open-intake shelter, which means we must take in every DeKalb County animal who comes through our shelter doors. Currently our kennels are full. Each week, more dogs come in than leave, and we urgently need our community's support to help save lives.

We’re making a change to our process in the hopes that it will help more dogs find positive outcomes. Our at-risk page will still list dogs most urgently needing homes due to behavioral, quality of life concerns, or extended stay times, but will not have euthanasia deadlines. Each week we must hit a target capacity goal, which is tracked daily at the top of the at-risk page. Any dog who finds a home, whether from the general or at-risk population, helps reduce overcrowding and prevents euthanasia.

If we reach our target capacity by Tuesday at 8pm, we will not have to euthanize for space that week. If the target goal isn’t met by that time, we will have to make difficult space euthanasia decisions based on that gap. This is a difficult task for our teams who love and care for these dogs.

There are currently 609 dogs in our shelter, and we need to reach 605 by next Tuesday, November 5.

Our commitment remains focused on saving lives and providing humane care for the animals in our shelters. We are working as transparently as possible, showing our numbers every day, in the hopes that our community will help us reduce overcrowding and save lives. Your support in adopting, fostering, or spreading the word makes all the difference.

Please visit our shelter at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road or our website at DeKalbAnimalServices.com/at-risk to see these updates and view the dogs most in need.

Late last night, Animal Control Officers brought in 29 dogs from a single location, overwhelming our shelter at a particularly challenging time.

This large impound will push our shelter population well over 600 dogs. While we frequently battle the issue of overcrowding, we are now facing unprecedented pressure to find a humane way to accommodate this many dogs in one building.

We need all hands on deck to find homes for these pets. If you or someone you know can help, please consider fostering any dog from our building. Adoptions are also free for the rest of the month.

With your help, we can turn an overwhelming moment into a miracle for these dogs and so many others. Make a difference today by visiting us at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

You can also support the work we do by donating at lifelineanimal.org/help-save-lives/

Say hi to Monkey Pie! The pup who is ready to steal your heart and join you on every adventure! Since moving from the shelter to a foster home, he’s truly blossomed into a joyful companion who loves the great outdoors. His favorite things? Running, exploring, and being by your side.

Monkey Pie’s also wonderfully house-trained and knows commands like a pro, making him a breeze for an experienced dog owner. Whether you’re hitting the trails or just hanging out at home, Monkey Pie’s ready to bring his energy and love along for the ride.

Monkey Pie would do best as the only pet in a home with a fenced yard and an active family to shower him with the love and guidance he deserves.

Biggie AKA Bunzilla, may be 11 pounds of pure fluff, but this bunny's heart is even bigger! She’s spent the last month at our shelter, and while we love having her, it's tough to imagine such a large bunny spending in a cage near so many dogs. The stress hasn’t been ideal, but she’s still kept her sweet personality.

Despite her size, Biggie’s a gentle giant who adores pets, munching on carrots, and hopping around for some fun. If you're ready for lots of love (and a bit of fur), hop on over to our shelter at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road and meet Biggie today!

DeKalb County Animal Services has been overcrowded, with 594 dogs currently in our shelter - well beyond our building's capacity. It is incredibly difficult for our team to operate a facility with this many dogs and because of this we have been faced with making the difficult decision of euthanasia. The dogs seen here are the ones struggling the most in the shelter who need your help.

We have 26 dogs this week who urgently need adoption or foster homes by 8pm next Tuesday, 10/29. If they don’t find placement by the deadline, they will be at high risk of euthanasia. These decisions are never easy, and each dog is thoroughly considered when determining if they are at risk.

Please help us save their lives! By sharing our message, you can help us reach others who can bring a dog home. Together, we can make a difference and get these dogs out of the shelter and into a home where they belong. Please visit us this week at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA.

Please note: due to the high volume of animals in need, we aren’t able to closely monitor this post. If you are looking to help, please come directly to the shelter.

Ricotta, or Ricky to her friends, is hoping to find the perfect family for her! This sweet, sensitive girl can be shy when you first meet her, but once she feels comfortable, you’ll discover a gentle, cuddly companion who loves playtime and going on adventures with her canine pals. She’s truly like a hidden gem waiting to be found.

One of the most unforgettable things about Ricotta is her empathy. When dogs or humans are upset, she’ll bring them a toy and offer a comforting hug. She shines her brightest when she has a confident dog friend by her side to help her feel secure and bring out her playful side.

Ricky and her dog sister, Feta, are looking for a temporary foster home while their foster family is out of town from October 23 to November 3. If you're interested in adopting or helping temporarily care for Ricky and or her sister, you can connect with their foster mom at: bit.ly/AdoptRicottaLifeLine.

10/14/2024

Saving the lives of the animals in our shelters is no easy task, especially with the overwhelming number of dogs currently housed at DeKalb/Fulton County Animal Services. Every week, we share the list of dogs at risk in our shelter, including those who need to leave by Tuesday nights.

To make it easier for our community to step in and save lives, we’re extending our hours every Tuesday until 8pm. This extra hour provides a critical opportunity to help at risk dogs leave our shelter and find loving homes, and to alleviate overcrowding as we work to reach our weekly shelter capacity goal.

Our team is ready to help you find the right pet for you, knowing that each adoption or foster makes a huge difference. Visit us today at 3280 Chamblee Dunwoody Road and save a life.
