Awhile ago I asked what everyone’s biggest dog training issues were. And I received a lot of good questions. The overall, connecting issue in all dog training involves meeting the dogs needs.
This may sound simplistic but, it’s not simple at all.
Dogs have an emotional and physical life. That requires their human to be mindful and proactive.
Before starting any training carefully consider what exactly your dog needs to be content.
Many aggressive behaviors stem from physical ailments. Such as gastrointestinal issues, arthritis, and even vision or hearing issues. It’s important to have your dog examined by a qualified veterinarian to rule out any physical conditions that could be contributing to their behavior.
After doing that, it’s time to think about your dogs emotional needs. Are they getting the time and attention that they need to be content? Are you spending time with them everyday one on one? Or are they merely a fixture in your busy day to day life? They are bred to be our companions and need quality time with us to thrive.
Dogs need mental stimulation as well. This can be addressed fairly simply by allowing them to sniff and explore on walks. Start by using a long leash. Not a flexi leash. 15 feet minimum. When safe let the leash out and let them explore what interests them. Reel yourself to them if it’s not safe and you need to be closer to them. Never use the leash to pull your dog to you or away from something—that helps to create leash reactivity.
You can also make mealtimes more engaging by scattering food on the kitchen floor, back patio, or backyard grass. Let them use their senses finding it. Hearing it fall, watching you toss it, sniffing it out. This gives them a mealtime activity and engages their brains more than simply eating out of a bowl. You can also do the scattering with treats. It’s a daily activity I do with my pups and the rescue dogs too.
And don’t forget to just play with them. It’
Oreo is such a good girl. Only 8 months old and so gentle with little dogs. She’s a wonderful large breed puppy. Loves cuddling with her foster family and watching tv too.

The dogs started to have fun at their first adoption event. It’s a bit crazy with so many first timers, trying to figure out the routine. So many darling littles today. A huge thanks to all the volunteers that came out today! It was nice having the help.
Warning—super cute footage ahead. And don’t turn volume on—there’s something wrong with my phone audio.
Daisy (tricolored) and Joy (yellow ) are 12 week old puppies having a blast at their foster home. They love a good game of tug.
Up for adoption now.

It’s hard to keep up with these two. Romeo and Hershey are speed racers! Does your pup like to chase or be chased? Romeo likes to be chased and Hershey likes to chase. Tell us in the comments about your dog’s preference.
Ginger doesn’t get a lot of attention—as far as potential adopters go. But, this girl is super smart. She would make an amazing agility dog, trick dog, ratter etc etc. And she absolutely loves loves loves playing with the hose. We have to do this everyday for her, or take her through the car wash 🤣🤣🤣
Our sweet Oreo has found her forever home. Now, it’s time to find the other dogs great forever families.
