One Dog Arizona is a 501c-e charitable organization. We save animals from being put to sleep in Arizona shelters. Through constant networking via email, Facebook and adoption events we place them in loving foster homes until they find a permanent home. Our fosters are the best ever! They provide the time and attention these dogs so desperately need--Basic training, good nutrition and lots of love are given to them each day.

Awhile ago I asked what everyone’s biggest dog training issues were. And I received a lot of good questions. The overall, connecting issue in all dog training involves meeting the dogs needs.
This may sound simplistic but, it’s not simple at all.

Dogs have an emotional and physical life. That requires their human to be mindful and proactive.

Before starting any training carefully consider what exactly your dog needs to be content.

Many aggressive behaviors stem from physical ailments. Such as gastrointestinal issues, arthritis, and even vision or hearing issues. It’s important to have your dog examined by a qualified veterinarian to rule out any physical conditions that could be contributing to their behavior.

After doing that, it’s time to think about your dogs emotional needs. Are they getting the time and attention that they need to be content? Are you spending time with them everyday one on one? Or are they merely a fixture in your busy day to day life? They are bred to be our companions and need quality time with us to thrive.

Dogs need mental stimulation as well. This can be addressed fairly simply by allowing them to sniff and explore on walks. Start by using a long leash. Not a flexi leash. 15 feet minimum. When safe let the leash out and let them explore what interests them. Reel yourself to them if it’s not safe and you need to be closer to them. Never use the leash to pull your dog to you or away from something—that helps to create leash reactivity.

You can also make mealtimes more engaging by scattering food on the kitchen floor, back patio, or backyard grass. Let them use their senses finding it. Hearing it fall, watching you toss it, sniffing it out. This gives them a mealtime activity and engages their brains more than simply eating out of a bowl. You can also do the scattering with treats. It’s a daily activity I do with my pups and the rescue dogs too.

And don’t forget to just play with them. It’s amazing what a good regular play session can do for your pup’s mood and yours too. Video is of Ginger playing in the hose. She loves it so much. And we try to engage her in some kind of play everyday.

Your dogs will thrive when you see their behavior as a result of an unmet need, and address that first.
Stay tuned for more training tips & tricks and feel free to comment what you need help with on this thread. I do read through them all. It just takes me time to post a response ;)

This is what rescue is all about. These sweet Pugs had been looking for a family for the past 4 months. We knew that they needed to be together, which made it a little harder. But, who doesn’t love 2 Pugs instead of just one? lol.

When we received the email from their family we were pretty hopeful that it was meant to be. And after meeting them, we knew that this was the perfect family for them. They even had a Pug before and love their quirky personalities. Check out the dad’s t-shirt.
Frankie & Annette(Mabel) now have 3 darling girls all of their own and we know that they will thrive with all of the love and attention.

Congratulations to everyone! We will miss those two but, couldn’t be happier that they found such a wonderful family.

Have you fostered a dog for us before? If you have and are in good standing with us, please considering a dog for the holidays. I know that our sweet girl Whitney would love a family for Christmas. She’s a great walking partner and probably would love a nice hike.

We also have Paris our small poodle boy. He’s an expert cuddler and all around friendly guy. Loves his people with his full heart.

And you don’t get sweeter than Kirby our Puggle puppy. He’s so ready for a forever and ever family but, would love to have some one on one attention for Christmas.

Adoption event Sunday 12-2pm at My Pet Market 2915 W Ray rd Chandler. Sunday. 12-15-24

Kaspian is a beautiful puppy. We aren’t sure if breed exactly. 5 months old. Approx 15 lbs(underweight but, working on it) super sweet and cuddly. Soft and silky coat. I am guessing a Pomsky or a Spitz breed. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready for a forever and ever family. Email [email protected] if you’re interested.

Training shouldn’t hurt. Dogs learn best within a positive environment. When they get hurt for doing something wrong, they aren’t learning—they are trying to survive and are in fight or flight mode. Be better and train positively. It’s better for everyone!

Our adoption fees help to cover the costs of the dogs while they are in rescue. We have been getting a few inquiries asking to cut our adoption fees in half because the people can not afford the dog.
This is a red flag to most rescues because having a pet and caring for them appropriately is expensive. And if you can’t afford an adoption fee, you probably can’t afford routine care, let alone emergency care.
We also require adopters that value the dogs lives at least as much as we do. And we prefer adopters who care even more. And are happy to pay the fee to help ensure that the rescue can continue carrying for the dogs in our organization. —Some of which will spend their lives with us, as they aren’t adoptable for various issues. But, we love them anyway and know that they deserve a good life.

As a rescue we do not give dogs away to just anyone. We try to ensure that the dog and family match in activity level and temperament. We know that not everyone is ok with dogs that shed. And that’s ok. But, once we know this about the family we will not suggest or let you adopt a Chihuahua, Lab, Golden, or Pug from us They all shed. And if you’re unhappy then our dog is you going to be unhappy. We want everyone to succeed.

Same goes for a very active family looking for an adventure buddy. We aren’t going to recommend our couch potato pups. They’d much rather go to a home that loves lazy afternoons reading books and watching movies. It’s in everyone’s best interest.

Rescue is very time consuming and expensive. It takes dedication, patience, and a whole lot of love. We do not take our responsibility lightly. Many dogs adoption fees do not even come close to covering their expenses while in rescue. But, there are others that have sponsors that cover some medical expenses so that their fee can go towards a dogs expenses that were far greater than their fee.
Not to mention the daily costs of food, treats, enrichment, and comfort items. It all adds up very fast.

The rescue must continue to bring in more money than goes out, if we want to survive. Basic business sense. And we are a charity to help dogs(plus the occasional other animal) not humans that can not afford a pet.

If you’d like to help our little rescue thrive please consider donating to our PayPal account using [email protected] on the PayPal site.

It could help us save a life or two.

Ever wondered if dogs can see in the dark? While not fully nocturnal, dogs have superior low-light vision and enhanced senses to navigate dim spaces at night.
