We have garlic, tomatoes, and eggplant on the farm stand this week then we will close for a much needed break. We will reopen in the Fall. The garlic will keep for 6 months or more so stock up while we have it.

The farm stand is stocked again. We have tomatoes, dragon’s tongue string beans, fairytale eggplant, sweet peppers, and honey. We’ll have more eggs this afternoon.

Eggs are back in stock! We will try to keep them stocked going forward. We also put the last of the spinach and the first few cucumbers.

We were out of town this past weekend but the farm stand is stocked up again. I just put lettuce, spinach, and beets on the stand. We are out of eggs until the 14th, unfortunately.

We have eggs back in stock! We are happy to have found an egg farmer near by, in Siler City. The chickens are full time on pasture, moved 3 times a week. The pasture is then allowed to rest. This method has recently been dubbed “regenerative” because it’s great for regenerating soil. The chickens, of course, love it. It’s much healthier for them and results in healthy, tastier eggs for us.

Starting more seeds! Calaloo, Spinach, Water Spinach, Basil, Lettuce, and Dragon’s Tongue beans! Rezi is getting pretty efficient at seeding. She can seed with minimal instruction and supervision.

We will be out by the farmstand today from 10 AM to 1 PM. We will have house plants, lemonade, hot chocolate, muffins, and veggies!

We are open! Thank you all for your support! We made the difficult decision last Fall to let go of our workers. We were struggling with efficiency. We will focus our energy this year on improving efficiency and learning what scale of farming is manageable for our family (4 big hands and 4 little hands). Fava beans are abundant now. This time of year, they are delicious cooked like a green bean. We have plenty of other spring produce as well. Come and get some!

Our sincere apologies to our amazing Fifth Bed Farm community! You might have noticed that our stand has been a bit sparse lately. Our farm is going through a transformative phase, reimagining how we operate. As we explore these new avenues, the stand will continue to have a bit of produce, however we will continue to have coffee and honey! We plan on posting here to let you know if there is new produce in the fridge! The exciting news: we're exploring a new chapter, offering space for fellow farmers to grow and share their bounty with you! If you are interested in something like this, please reach out to us! We are expanding our CSA! CSAs are a great way to lear to eat seasonally while supporting local agriculture. They also give us the security we need to guarantee we can pay our workers every week. We offer a vegetable share (5 seasonal items $25), a microgreens share (2-3 items $12), pastured eggs (all organic feed $8/dozen, currently on a wait list), and coffee from Gray Squirrel Coffee ($11/8oz bag). New limited additions to the farm stand: organic dragon’s tongue beans (eat them raw or cooked) and multi-coloured cauliflower from Fishel Organics. We also put out arugula and baby leaf komatsuna.

I just wanted to highlight one of my all time favourite vegetables purslane. It is has the highest amount of alpha-linolenic (an omega 3 fatty acid) of any leafy vegetable! It has a mild tart flavour. You can add it to salads or soups or (for the adventurous) look up a recipe to see how the rest of the world eats it.

New items on the farm stand! The Oregon sweet meat squash is phenomenal! The difference between these and an acorn squash from the store is comparable to the difference between a store bought tomato and one from a local farm. Purslane is back in stock. This is one of my favourites. And, we put out the first of our eggplant.

We are growing beautiful cut flowers! Come by the stand and pick some up! This is our first year growing cut flowers, so please be patient with us as we figure out our process! We should have enough to put out around 4 or 5 bouquets per week… maybe more?! And like everything else on our farm, we use no chemical or pesticides on any of our flowers or veggies!

Farm update: all potatoes are not created equal. Some are good producers, others taste amazing, some may have unique nutritional properties. If we treat produce like a commodity, we miss out on all of this diversity. We have 5 varieties of potatoes on the stand now, several varieties of microgreens (changes weekly), small amounts of cauliflower, and were just starting to put out cherry tomatoes.
