How much weight should be in your hands?
This is a question I get asked a lot. How much contact should I have? Or often in the form of a complaint β My horse is too heavy! I canβt find any steady contact!
I find itβs very hard for people to gauge actual weight measurements β 1 pound, 8 ounces, 10 pounds? So I usually use fruit to talk about contact. π π π Each horse is an individual, and they like a different amount of contact. But as dressage riders, we are always striving for self carriage, and an end result of a horse who is light in the contact. Also, each rider is an individual, and some riders do better with a bit more contact, and some are better with a very light connection. My ideal contact is about the weight of a grapefruit. Itβs reliable, I can trust that my horse is steadily pushed to the bit, but it is not heavy. If Iβm holding up a watermelon, I have a problem. And if I only have two grapes in my hands, I might also have a problem. The best contact is ELASTIC and ADJUSTABLE. I can push the horse more to the bit for a stronger connection at times, and then I can half halt and release to make the contact very light at times.
Whatβs your ideal contact??
