Soft coated wheaten terriers make a fun-loving and affectionate companion. They are gentle and have playful nature that make them a good match for children. While wheaten terriers are friendly toward strangers and usually good with other dogs and pets, they can make an attentive watchdog, and adequate protection dog. Wheatens are eager to please but can be headstrong. They do best with reward-based training involving food and games.

The eastern tiger salamander averages seven to eight and one-fourth inches in length. Its body is blue-black or brown-black with random, small, yellow blotches. The olive-yellow belly has dark stripes. And we think they are very cute!

Pet paws, like human hands, are susceptible to frostbite. Remove caked ice from your dog's feet as soon as possible. Frostbitten skin may turn color, becoming reddish, gray, or white. It may become scaly and begin peeling. If you suspect frostbite, thaw out the affected areas slowly using warm, moist towels and change them frequently. Have your pet evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the extent of the damage.

Once you're moved in Arrange your dog’s belongings in their appropriate locations. Set up his toy box if he has one. Help him settle in his bed when you relax (or on your couch if that is allowed). The comfort of a familiar bed or crate can be helpful. Set up his sleeping area so that it resembles the one he had in your former home. Be sure your dog does know how to find his food and water. Toys, treats, and interactive social time (training, play) can ease the transition of the move. When it is time to rest, use treats to encourage your dog to settle in his bed.

Shih Tzu have a coat that is long, dense and fairly straight. Brushing and combing every other day is necessary to prevent matts. Many pet owners elect to have their dogs professionally groomed, or clipped into a trim that is more easily cared for. It is important to take care that stray hairs and lashes don't irritate the eyes. Because of poor air circulation, ears should be checked weekly for problems. Shedding is below average. The breed is prone to periodontal problems, which can be prevented in large part by regular tooth brushing.

Week thirteen of our new series continues today with the state of Hawaii and their state animal, the Hawaiian Monk Seal. Hawaiian monk seals are endemic to Hawaii and are the only marine mammal found solely in U.S. waters. If your dog is stressed, first remove him from the stressor. Find a quiet place for him to regroup. Resist the urge to overly comfort him. If you want to pamper him with petting or treats, make him earn them first by performing an activity (e.g., sitting). Responding to routine commands distracts the dog and provides a sense of normalcy. It is amazing how comforting sit, down, and heel can be to a worried dog.
