We are sorry to report that our boss hen, Ethel, has passed away. Ethel was 4 years old, quite a good long life for an ISA Brown production layer. She assumed the roll of Queen right from the beginning. We received Ethel along with Mabel in March 2021 as 2 week old chicks, along with a pre-fab coop, from my family to keep me busy while I was in the early stages of living life with a chronic illness. Chicken math is real, and Ethel watched her empire grow, and she watched over the construction of her new palace. She reigned over the other hens, trained up Lou the Roo, and remained in control without being a terrible bully. A true regent.

In her time, Ethel will have laid over 900 eggs. Thank you, Ethel, for teaching us how to raise and care for chickens, for taking care of the flock, and many delicious meals. We will miss you.

I always listen to a little Hank when I'm canning. He was one of Pop's favorites, and canning always makes me think of him ❤️

Add blackberry jam to grilled cheese sandwiches (great with white cheddar cheese)
Top ice cream with vanilla bourbon peach jam
Glaze pork tenderloin with apple garlic rosemary jelly
Make a quick appetizer with jalapeño jelly and cream cheese
Make cheesecakes extra special with a strawberry jam topping
Dress tacos with a dollop of peach habanero jam
Easy lunches of peanut butter and strawberry rhubarb jam sandwiches

We are saddened to let you know that we will not be represented at the Iowa State Fair this year. Unfortunately the drop off and pickup times for entries does not align with our schedule.

As many of you have heard, Emily had surgery this summer and it has been difficult keeping up with canning and the bees between trips to the doctor. We are very grateful for all of the help we have received from family.

Because of this, you may have noticed that our schedule has been light and we haven't been around like we would like to be. Our inventory is up to date currently and we do offer delivery and porch pickup.

We look forward to seeing you soon as we get recovered and caught up!

We decided to stick with induction, and she's sure fancy! Going to be a bit of a learning curve, but I'll get there eventually!
