This week we are celebrating World Water Day, Charleston! While Charleston boasts beautiful beaches and marshland sceneries, we have a duty to protect our water quality. According to Charleston Waterkeeper and the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, areas like Shem and Filbin Creek have dangerous bacteria levels that make swimming hazardous. Development, climate change, and waste runoff contribute to a heightened need for environmental protection.

According to a study published by the American Chemistry Society, dog waste contributes pathogens and antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria to our sewer systems that can cause human illnesses. Nitrogen in dog p**p also contributes to harmful algae blooms in waterways that cause oxygen depletion, killing fish and wildlife. It is our responsibility as dog owners to clean up after our animals if we want to keep Charleston healthy, beautiful and swimmable. Poo*ch Patrol is here to help keep your yards and our rivers pristine.

To learn more about this important issue, check out the great local organization Charleston Waterkeeper!
