Welcome to our new series, Success Story Spotlights, where we will occasionally highlight a patient case with a happy ending to fill your feed with some positivity!
Mowgli was just a tiny puppy (estimated to be about 4 weeks old) when his new owners found him as the sole surviving puppy amongst his deceased littermates at their hunt club. His mother was nowhere to be found and Mowgli was emaciated and infested with maggots. He was brought into James Island Veterinary Hospital for initial assessment.
After his initial clean-up, deworming, a round of antibiotics, and some TLC from his new owners, Mowgli began to gain weight and behave more like a normal puppy, however, as he got stronger, it became evident that he was not able to walk normally. Over the course of a couple of days, his elbow and knee joints began to develop progressive, severe swelling and he had worsening difficulty walking. Though he was eating well, affectionate, and growing, it was clear he continued to have medical problems associated with his rough start to life. His joints were tapped to sample the fluid within them to see if it was due to infection or inflammation from an improper immune response to all that Mowgli had been through at such a young age. His joint tap showed only a large amount of white blood cells and no bacteria, so it is presumed this was an immune-mediated arthritis. This condition is usually seen in older animals and occurs when the animal's immune system begins to inappropriately attack the joint structures. Left untreated, this condition will cause damage to the cartilage and bone resulting in debilitating osteoarthritis.
Mowgli was started on high doses of steroids to suppress this inappropriate immune response and had a near immediate response! Within a week, he went from a severely bow-legged stance, very swollen joints, and barely able to walk, to no swelling present and RUNNING!!! Mowgli has continued to thrive and is the most precious boy! His steroids will be ta
