Today our little explorers had a blast in the garden! We touched the softest Lamb Ear’s 🐑, smelled the yummy lemon grass 🍋, and even discovered a mysterious "pickle" smell in the air! 🥒 We got our hands dirty planting carrots for the spring 🥕, and ended our Green Heart lesson with a yummy green bean taste test! 😋

Fortunately, our team is able to spend a couple of days at home while the winter weather passes. Here are some of the things we do to prepare our gardens for cold snaps like this one. 🌱❄️

-Gave all our plants a thorough watering, as hydrated roots are better equipped to withstand freezing conditions.
-Harvested all remaining cold sensitive fruits and vegetables before the freeze damaged their quality (including citrus and bananas)
-Turned off the drip irrigation system to prevent burst water pipes.
-Added a thick layer of mulch around the base of our strawberries, which acts as insulation, keeping the roots warm and moist.
-Covered our strawberries with frost blankets, to keep leaves from freezing so they bounce back quickly in the early spring

A couple more tips for home gardeners:

-For plants that are more sensitive to the cold, consider bringing them indoors to keep them safe from the chill.
-Outdoor plants that remain should be covered with frost cloths, burlap, or even old blankets to shield them from freezing temperatures.

Protect now, thrive in spring!

New Year, more Farm Stand! After a couple of weeks off, we are excited to open again this Thursday and remind folks what our Farm Stand is about. At the Urban Farm at Enston Home, we run a weekly Farm Stand on Thursdays distributing produce to the community. You can expect to find a variety of produce coming from our own gardens as well as produce donated to us from Limehouse Produce, Grow Food Carolina, and Lowcountry Street Grocery. What makes our Farm Stand special is the pay-what-you-can system. While payment is not required, any amount customers can contribute towards the price is appreciated and will support our farm and garden operations.

One final reason you should give to Green Heart this giving season: Healthy Food Production!

This year, we will grow 5,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables at our Urban Farm at Enston Home and school garden spaces.

And we will host a weekly, “pay what you can” Farm Stand offering our Green Heart Grown produce and produce from local distributors to community members.

“I love coming to the Market. I come every week. It is very convenient and I have a chance to get fresh food and talk with the friendly staff.”

— Richard, Resident

“I’ve been coming since they opened. The Green Heart staff is so kind and they give good service to the people that live here. Fresh food that’s affordable is the way it should be everywhere.”

—Jackie, Resident

In a time of high inflation, access to fresh produce is unfortunately getting more and more difficult. Each week out of the year, we provide access to fresh produce for 30-40 customers through our Thursday Farm Stand at the Urban Farm at Enston Home. More than half of the customers are residents of the property, which houses residents of low to moderate income.

The Farm Stand is staffed largely by our Youth Employees, providing our young people with a valuable work experience while serving the community.

Our Healthy Food Production Program is primarily funded by donations from individuals like you! Please consider making a gift today to our Fall Campaign through the link below.

Q: Why should you give to Green Heart this giving season?

A: Youth Development!

This year we will employ 6-8 high school Youth Interns in meaningful work and hands-on education in our farm and gardens, as well as launch our Youth Apprenticeship Program. The Youth Apprenticeship is a 12-month, full-time employment experience designed as a bridge for students from high school or college to career.

External evaluation by a graduate student at College of Charleston has found that our Youth Interns, as a result of their involvement in our program, show significant gains in:

Career preparedness skills
Healthy living attitudes
Sustainable food systems content knowledge

“Being out here has really improved my self worth and how I think about myself, because of how much reflection we have out here and connecting with nature.”

— Natayshia, Crew Member
10th grade at Early College HS

Since we began the Youth Development Program in 2020, we have employed 65 high school students in paid internships. Many of them return year after year and gain higher levels of responsibility and leadership.

Xavier McDaniel (2021-2024 Youth Intern) is now employed as a full-time Farm and Garden Assistant with The Green Heart Project.

Our Youth Development Program is primarily funded by donations from individuals like you, so please consider contributing to our Fall Campaign through the link below.

Q: Why should you donate to Green Heart this giving season?

A: Farm to School!

This year, we will reach 1,200 students through 200 Farm to School lessons in our farm and garden spaces. The lessons focus on our 3 Rules of Respect, while teaching students how to plant, cultivate, harvest, and cook the fruits and vegetables they grow.

In internal evaluation of our Farm to School efforts, we have measured:
* 90% of students are comfortable working in the garden
* 85% of students are comfortable cooking a meal
* 81% of students shared things they learned in Green Heart with their families

When students received weekly programs throughout the entire school year, they were
* 28% more likely to say that they like or love vegetables

and

* 26% more likely to say that they like or love trying new foods

compared to the beginning of the year.

Our Farm to School Program is primarily funded by donations from individuals like you, so please consider contributing to our Fall campaign, linked below:

Volunteers needed for Spring 2025 semester. Green Heart Buddies assist our full-time Garden Educators in the delivery of outdoor classroom instruction to elementary school students. This includes leading small groups in hands-on gardening activities, helping with arts and crafts projects, and reinforcing learning presented by the Garden Educator. No particular gardening expertise is required; just a willingness to help young minds grow!

Lesson Spotlight: Strawberry Planting 🍓

We hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving and enjoyed a well-deserved break! In our garden, we’ve been busy planting strawberries alongside green onions.

You might wonder, “Why plant strawberries so early? Aren’t they a spring crop?” Planting strawberries now allows the plants to establish strong roots before spring, which means a healthier harvest when the warm weather rolls around.

With winter’s chill on the way, it’s important to protect these delicate plants from frost. Mulching and covering them ensure our strawberry babies stay safe and cozy through the cold months.

We’re happy to report that all our strawberries are snug and thriving, ready to reward us with sweet treats in the spring!

We hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and a restful weekend. And we hope you know today is Giving Tuesday!

This Fall, as we marked the 15 year anniversary of The Green Heart Project, we set an ambitious fundraising goal of $300,000 to invest in the Green Heart mission - to grow minds and grow community through growing food. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and to the success of our 2nd Annual Farm to Table Dinner, we have already surpassed our goal! But this doesn’t mean we are ready to stop; rather, we are compelled to push further. In response to this amazing show of generosity, we have increased our fundraising goal to $500,000.

This Giving Tuesday, please consider giving to The Green Heart Project to help us reach our goal and continue to grow a healthier future for Charleston.

Your gift will support our three core program areas: (1) Farm to School; (2) Youth Development; and (3) Healthy Food Production. Click the link in our bio to make a contribution today.

Oh what a night!! We were overwhelmed by the support shown by attendees at the 2nd Annual Farm to Table Dinner, two weeks ago. We had a blast, and raised over $300,000 for the Green Heart mission, thanks to some very generous gifts. And we can't wait to do it again next year 🙂 Many thanks to all of our event partners and sponsors. Mary Ellen Long Way DeeAnn Flores Schertz Foundation

Garden Spotlight 🌱: Mitchell Elementary

This week's Garden spotlight is coming from the site where Green Heart started back in 2009, Mitchell Elementary School. We started out by building a garden with a 3rd grade class on the corner school grounds, but since then the garden has expanded and grown. Mitchell Elementary school has three parts of the garden. Walking up to the school on the left is an Outdoor Classroom garden, on the right is a STEAM garden and right across the street in the City park is the Mitchell Urban Farm. The STEAM garden is used by the garden educators to give a hands-on experience for the students. The outdoor classroom is used by the teachers in the school to enrich the students' learning experience. The Mitchell Urban Farm is being maintained by our all-star volunteer, Mr. Greg, who donates his time and skill to the Farm. The food we grow in this particular garden goes to Ms. Washington in the school cafeteria to be served to the students. We also have a few fruit trees incubating along the side of the farm.

Lesson Spotlight: 🎨 Art in the Garden 💚

For this week's lesson spotlight we are going to take a look at the art that has been produced by some of our students. You should see the excitement in the students' eyes when they hear it’s going to be an art project for the day. We asked Amy the Garden Educator who is also a former art teacher what she felt about the connection between Art and Gardening and how it benefits the students.

“Art in the garden not only helps students express their creativity, but it helps them foster a better understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Careful observation of nature while drawing and sculpting helps them understand more complex concepts. Displaying their finished work gives them a feeling of ownership in the garden.”

Produce Spotlight! We grow a variety of fruits and vegetables in our farms and gardens and want to share some information about them with you.

Today’s produce spotlight is on Brassicas. This family of vegetables includes Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage, Collard Greens, and many more! They are hearty vegetables that prefer cooler temperatures, and when planted in the Fall, will grow all the way through the Winter in the Lowcountry. Brassicas are very versatile and are delicious when braised, sauteed, roasted, and used in salad. Swing by the Urban Farm to see how our brassicas are coming along.

If you’d like to get a taste of any of these delicious produce, swing by the Farm Stand this week Thursday at the Urban Farm.

This week’s Lesson Spotlight - ”A Buzz in the Garden” 🐝- is coming from . We turned our 4th graders into worker bees for the day. Beekeeper / Garden Educator Jane has a quick word for us about the Sullivans hive.

“Students learned about honeybees’ structural adaptations by playing a pollination relay game to mimic and see how their bodies help aid them in pollinating! Additionally, students explored the garden searching for nectar and pollen that will attract honeybees to their garden.”
