Summer is HERE🥵☀️

While summertime is great for outdoor walks and days by the pool…it’s also super great for causing our pets to overheat!😱

Check out this infographic our friends at SPCA of Texas shared to learn what the signs of heatstroke are and see who are most at risk!

What do you do if your pet experiences any combination of these symptoms?
• Move them to a cool place🏡
• Start active cooling by using a cool (not cold) damp cloth over their body💧
• Travel to a veterinary office IMMEDIATELY🩺

We want your pets to enjoy summer, while also being safe!🩵 By limiting time outdoors during the mid day hours and always offering fresh water to drink, we can keep our pets happy, hydrated, and healthy!

So it’s time for your pets’ annual exam…but what vaccines do they need?😱

The WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) has just released new guidelines for “core” vaccines. In other words, vaccines that we should plan for our pets to have!💉

The updated recommendation is for dogs in a home to receive the DHPP, rabies, and leptospirosis vaccines. For cats, the FVRCP, rabies, and feline leukemia vaccines. (Cats do need a Combo test prior to the Leukemia vaccine to ensure that they do not have active infection)🩵

At Fix Charleston, we want to see your pets live a happy, healthy life and are here for wellness exams Tuesday-Friday each week🫶🏻Give us a call at 304-342-5660 or use our online appointment scheduling system to schedule your visit! Link in the comments👇🏻

Calling all teachers and school administrators📚✏️

At Fix Charleston and the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association we are passionate about educating all ages on humane care of animals and what it means to be a life-saving organization🩵

We are opening up the opportunity for our staff to visit local schools and discuss animal welfare with children of all age groups! Our younger friends may enjoy learning about how to care for pets and what an animal shelter is, while our older groups may be interested in learning what career options there are for animal lovers or how to be involved in saving lives!🩺

If you are a school or classroom that would like to have our team visit for a session, feel free to email [email protected] and we can make arrangements🥰
(Bonus points if your class is willing to take in donations for shelter pets😉)

Help us grow the next generation of animal welfare advocates!💚

2023…Where do we even start?🙏🏻

This has been a year full of changes and growth and exciting new opportunities. We’ve welcomed two new Veterinarians to our team, as well as multiple new staff members, served the community in ways we never thought possible, and of course fell in love with hundreds of new animals💚

While 2023 had its fair share of challenges, our community supported us through each trial and showed us an extraordinary amount of patience as we worked to reopen our doors this fall. We can never say thank you enough to the ones who helped us along the way and who showed unwavering support💙

We know that next year will be just as challenging, but also just as rewarding, and we look forward to experiencing it all with you and your pets🥰

From our pack to yours, here’s to 2024⭐️

Q: What exactly is a microchip?
A: A microchip is a small, electronic chip enclosed in a glass cylinder that is about the same size as a grain of rice. It is activated by a scanner that is passed over the area, and the radio waves put out by the scanner activate the chip. The chip transmits the identification number to the scanner, which displays the number on the screen.

Q: How is a microchip implanted into an animal? Is it painful? Does it require surgery or anesthesia?
A: It is injected under the skin using a hypodermic needle. It is no more painful than a typical injection. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can be implanted during a routine veterinary office visit.

Q: Should I be concerned about my privacy if my pet is microchipped? Will someone be able to track me down?
A: No. You don't need to be concerned about your privacy. The information you provide to the manufacturer's microchip registry will be used to contact you in the event your pet is found and its microchip is scanned.

Q: Will a microchip really make it more likely for me to get my pet back if it is lost?
A: Definitely! In fact, a study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters in 23 states showed that microchipped animals are far more likely to be returned to their owners. In that study, microchipped stray dogs were returned to their owners at more than double the overall rate for all stray dogs. For stray cats, the difference in return rates was even more dramatic.

We want YOUR pets to find their way back to you, should they find themselves lost💚If you would like to get your pet microchipped, feel free to make an appointment with our team and we will be more than happy to help🥰

WHAT is this canine respiratory disease we are hearing about on the news and social media?😱

Veterinarians across the country are reporting a marked increase in the number of dogs with an acute respiratory infection. Cases range from mild to life threatening, sometimes deteriorating rapidly. Although respiratory diseases in dogs are not new, this particular strain has been somewhat non-responsive to common antibiotics😷 Diagnostic testing has not given the veterinary profession many answers, but here’s what we know thus far.

WHO is at risk and who is not?🦮
* Dogs in close quarters with other dogs, such as grooming salons/boarding facilities/day care/dog parks
* Overcrowded animal shelters
* Dogs who are not up to date on vaccines
* Humans and other species have NOT been reported to be at risk

HOW does my dog show symptoms?🤧
* Acute cough
* Sneezing
* Nasal discharge
* Fever
* Anorexia
* Lethargy
* Coughing may persist for weeks to months
* Highly contagious, rapidly spreading among dogs in close contact

Now the question we are all asking…HOW do I prevent my dog from getting sick?🙏🏻
* Make sure your dogs are up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines
* Avoid group settings such as day care/dog parks/boarding
* Disinfect animal housing areas thoroughly
* Promptly isolate dogs with respiratory symptoms and begin treatment as soon as possible

While there is still a lot we don’t know about this illness, we are doing everything we can to keep your pets safe and prevent spread in our area 💚 For daily updates and the most current research, visit the University of Florida Shelter Medicine website at https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/2023/11/27/mysterious-respiratory-disease/.
