Just like us, sometimes our pups can put on a few extra pounds. That's alright - we can help! The first step is setting up an appointment to get on the scale and then discuss diet. Blood work can help diagnose those dogs who have hypothyroidism and gain weight just looking at food. Keep in mind we share our space with Big River Vet and they have an underwater treadmill that can help too!

PET TOXIN of the MONTH: Chocolate
There are many types of chocolate: milk, dark, white, unsweetened, cocoa powder etc, and it turns out each type has a different potential for toxicity. The bitter seeds used to make chocolate are packed with methylxanthines, theobromine and caffeine, the toxic principles for dogs and cats. Both caffeine and theobromine produce similar effects, with the theobromine effects lasting much longer than the caffeine’s. The more chocolate liquor there is in a product, the more theobromine there is. This makes baking chocolate the worst for pets, followed by semisweet and dark chocolate, followed by milk chocolate, followed by chocolate flavored cakes or cookies, and white chocolate. High fat content can also cause pancreatitis.
Theobromine causes:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Hyperactivity
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Racing heart rhythm progressing to abnormal rhythms
• Death in severe cases
It takes nearly four days for the effects of chocolate to work its way out of a dog’s system. If the chocolate was only just eaten, it is possible to induce vomiting; but hospitalization and support therapy may be needed.

We get this question a lot and we totally understand! Think about it like this: Your primary care provider usually does bloodwork on you annually to check up on how your body’s doing. We need to do the same thing for your dog to catch any health concerns as early as possible 😉
