Important Information Post (Long, sorry)!
I would like to start by thanking everyone who has followed us over the last few years. Our tiny rescue took off so quickly and we have been so busy. We couldn't do it without all of you.. Our owner has had some life changes that have made things a little difficult to keep up with social media wise so I'm here just updating everyone and keeping everyone in the loop.
First things first, like many other rescues right now, we are struggling. To say that is an understatement. We are Washington, PA'S only exotic animal rescue. We get 20+ calls and emails a day on the regular... Literally EVERY single day. I am constantly turning animals down or putting them on waiting lists. Our aquatic turtle lists sometimes has taken almost a year to start moving again. It gets so overwhelming between caring, the running, and my life that it can take me days to reply. At any given time we have 200+ animals in our care. We are foster based and we couldn't do it without our fosters, but, we've been running into some issues there too with unreliability.
Secondly, we are donation based and non-profit. This means we 100% rely on donations to operate and 100% of the donations coming in are used solely to care for the animals, increased utility costs, veterinary care, supplies, and travel/meal expenses for vet trips/expos etc. None of our staff is paid. Everyone is 100% volunteer. Though we have a few regular donors, donations have been almost nonexistent this last year and this burns us tremendously. Our owner has even taken on a second job to start covering expenses so that we can keep up with calls but that is unfortunately needing to change. It is also one of the main reasons why it is taking so long to get replies.
Because of this, I have been debating heavily on closing down. Obviously I do not want too but it is becoming too much and extremely stressful. We have even only been taking in a few animals at a time in hopes that it's just been the economy and it still isn't changing. I know this is nothing personal to us. It's been all rescues. I've seen 7 reptiles announcing their closing in the last 2 months. That's so disheartening because there's already so few legit rescues for Exotics. This is a decision that has been heavily weighing on my mind lately and one that will likely be made sooner rather then later. We always have proof of expenses and veterinary costs.
IF we do close, we will ensure the animals go to good homes and our adoption policies will apply to all of them. We aren't discounting fees or bending our policies to place them and we would continue to place them until all were placed.
Lastly, we will be limiting and eventually completely stopping our birthday parties and educational programs. Now that I have this second job, it limited my availability to do them. By the time I do my second job, spend time with my children and family, and care for all of the animals I am pretty much left exhausted with no time to myself.
This is why the website isn't current or active. I am really struggling to keep up with everything. I WILL be posting an updated list of animals for adoption. Soon.
I really apologize. I truly love saving these animals lives and I have met some truly amazing people. The cost to upkeep verses donations coming in is just not working out for us.
Thank you for understanding. I really hope it doesn't come to this but it's not looking like much will change. Were holding onto hope things change though.
