This weekend, Vader and I went to our first GRC club practice, and it was SO FUN!

We learned so much. Honestly, I was learning more than he was. I'm so used to be the teacher that it was slightly overwhelming being put back into a position where I know nothing. However, everyone there was extremely supportive and patient with both Vader and I.

Vader excelled at the spring pole, and he absolutely loved it. I loved getting to see him so enthusiastic and so into it. We have so much to work on if we ever wanted to actually compete, but in the meantime, it was just fun.

Fun to learn new stuff.
Fun to see Vader do what he's good at.
Fun to be around other dog people.
Fun to meet others and expand my community.

We're excited for the next practice, and I'm excited to share some of it with yall!

Don't skip the mindset part of training!

Obedience is great. But in my opinion, it means nothing if you still have a mentally amped up dog. You can very quickly end up with a dog that has to be in a command in order to be good. And honestly, that's not what I want.

I want a dog that can settle on their own. A dog that can make good decisions without me constantly intervening. A dog that is pretty neutral to their surroundings.

How do we get there?

This is one of the ways. It doesn't have to he a big event. You can start adding observation time into your walks. That's what I did with Vader. Mid walk, I'd sit down with him and wait until he lied down and relaxed. Then we'd move on.

The first time took FOREVER. But now, he really has zero issues settling out in public.

Your dog doesn't need a certain level of training before you begin doing this. You could start this evening on your walk together. Just sit and enjoy the moment together.

Happy Training ❤️

For a reactive dog, the reaction typically starts when they first see a dog.

At the start of the video, Fonzie is pretty soft. Just walking next to his mom. The closer he gets to Vader, the more tense he gets.

His head lifts.
His ears go up.
His tail lifts
His body tenses.

These are super subtle signs, and I completely understand how people miss them.

If I'm working a dog, I'm never looking at the dog wete passing. I'm looking at my dog and watching to see how they're feeling about the other dog.

If we interrupt the fixation at the right moment, we can get our dog refocused on us and stop the reaction from happening. Over time, this builds a new pattern for your dog, and the reactions begin to fade away. It's a process, but it's absolutely worth it!

If you want to see the full video of today's lesson with Fonzie, it will be added to the Leash Manners course this evening! This course teaches you exactly how to teach leash manners and build up yes work. You then learn how to put it all together to go on smooth walks with your dog! Link in bio and below 👇🏻

I love the transformations of reactive dogs.

I love seeing them be able to calmly handle things that they couldn't before.

I love seeing the owners become more in tune with their dogs and more understanding of their dogs' behavior.

Reactivity has many layers, and I don't believe that it's something you can "correct" away.

Reactive dogs need guidance and support. They need someone to show them what to do around triggers, and they need someone that they can trust that can guide them through difficult moments.

Charlie and his mom have put in so much work. He was definitely a handful at the beginning! But today, the two of them were able to handle walking around a store full of men, loud noises, and another dog. This is a huge win, and they have absolutely earned it! I could not be more proud. Charlie's world just got a little bigger, and it's all thanks to his training and the practice him and his mom have put in! ❤️

If you're looking for help with your reactive dog, I've got you! Between the Online Community, one on one sessions, or full in home training, there's something for everyone!

Happy Wednesday!

I wanted to share some unique/uncommon places that you can train your dog at. Obviously the neighborhood and parks are great spots but sometimes I like to change it up! Here are some of my favorites:

✨️ Cabelas
✨️ Shopping centers (don't even have to go in stores, sometimes I just walk around)
✨️ Schools (Obviously when they're closed. Definitely don't go to schools while kids are present 😂)
✨️Drive thru lines or car washes
✨️Outdoor markets

Do you have any fun places that you like to work with your dog? Let me know! 👇🏻

I fully believe that part of fulfilling our dogs means getting them outside. Not only for their physical health but also for their (and our) mental health.

It doesn't have to be an elaborate hike or lake day. A walk with you and the family can be just as fulfilling.

Dogs are meant to move.
They should get the chance to explore new environments. To use their noses.
They should get the chance to run around and be playful.
They should get the chance to go on long walks with us where we are also fully present.

And if your walks with your dog are stressful, I can help you change that! I have an online community that shows exactly how to train a loose leash walk and help with reactivity on walks. The community is currently FREE, but it won't be forever, so now is the time to join! You'll find 100+ videos featuring a variety of dogs and behaviors. You'll also find e books and a social feed so that you can connect with other members who are also working with their dogs. You don't have to go through it alone! Link in bio and below 👇🏻

I wanted to share about Olive because I feel like a lot of parents can relate to having a fearful dog. Fear is slow, and it's a process to work, though, but it's a super rewarding one.

Her fear is a big one, and there were a lot of moments where it felt overwhelming for all of us involved in helping her. However, there is a way through fear. You just need time and patience.

We've implemented place, leash work, yes work, the crate and massage work all into her day to day so that we could condition a calm mindset and help her through big moments.

One slide 3, you'll see a loose overview of the steps we've taken to help her. We simply started with what she could handle and then built her up from there. Each session slowly chipping away at her fear.

At the beginning of her training, she had reached a point where she didn't even want to go outside. Yesterday, she was able to walk alongside a busy road without any freak outs. She's come such a long way, and her parents have worked so hard in helping her through everything, and I couldn't be more proud! We're definitely not done, but the progress is clear, and Olive is already doing much better!

If you'd like to see full videos of her training, you can find them in the Canine Composure Training Community, which is currently free to join! It won't be free forever, so now is definitely the time to get in and begin your training journey with your dog. You'll find videos and e books explaining how to teach a loose leash walk, build a follower mindset, help your dog through fear, condition calm, and touch more! Link in bio to join and below 👇🏻

The leash builds ✨️CONNECTION✨️

It's not just something to walk your dog with. It's a way to connect, offer guidance, and reconnect with your dog.

A lot of times, when I'm working a dog, I'm not looking at the dog. I'm going off of the feeling of the leash in my hand. If I feel tension from the dog, I step in with leash work. If I find that I'm adding tension, I take a moment to relax and soften.

If you feel like the leash is the only thing keeping your dog near you, then the connection isn't there. If your dog is constantly pulling against you, then the connection isn't there. So how do you fix it? How do you get the connection?

It's hard to explain in text on a social media post. But I have TONS of videos of me teaching exactly how to do it on my community page. Which, by the way, is completely FREE right now! A huge plus. You will find an entire section dedicated to leash manners and building connection with your dog.

Walks should be easy, yall! They should be fun and enjoyable for both of you! And if they aren't, I've got videos that can show you how to get there. Link in bio and below! Hope to see you in the community! 👇🏻

In the beginning, always or never is going to make things easier on everyone!

You want your dog to stop jumping on people. Great!

You decide your dog can no longer jump on you when you get home, but then on days when you're in a good mood and you're happy to see him, you let him jump on you. And on days when you're coming home stressed and exhausted, he jumps, and now you're mad at him and pushing him off.

But your dog doesn't understand the difference. He's going to assume that every time is one of those times where you'll let him jump on you. So all you're doing by living in the world of sometimes is slowing down your progress and creating confusion!

Make it clear. Make it always or never!

If you want to learn how to train your dog, join the Canine Composure Training Community. It's currently all free but it won't always be so now is the time to join! I tell anyone that will listen that training your dog takes time, effort, energy, and change.

Long-lasting results don't happen with quick fixes or one and done type things. Long-lasting results happen with changes in you and your dogs' lifestyle.

When I say training is a lifestyle, I mean that every day, every walk, outing, or play date is a chance to better your dogs' training. A chance to practice leash skills or manners in public. You don't teach it once and never revisit it. Otherwise, you lose it.

It's something you can work on every single day. You and your dog. Always growing. Always getting better. It takes a lot of work, but having that bond and trust between one another makes it absolutely worth it!

If you want to train your dog but are unsure where to start, join the Canine Composure Training Community. Free to join with free and paid content. I'd personally start with the Leash Manners and Yes Work Guide because it will give you and your dog a solid foundation that you can then build on.

Proper exercise!!

It's a non-negotiable, in my opinion. Every dog deserves exercise. 5 pounds, 50 pounds, 150 pounds. All of them.

Every dog has different levels that they need, and it definitely depends on age and breed. To me, exercise is a huge part of the training journey. It's important for a dogs physical and mental health!

And it doesn't always need to be walks. I like to change it up so that we don't get bored and stuck in a routine. Sometimes we swim, bike, run, fetch, run errands, hike, or simply walk. Either way, I set time aside each day to make sure Vader gets the proper exercise. To me, it's my job as his owner to make sure he's properly fulfilled each day!

If you want your walks to look like this but don't know how to get there, check out my Leash Manners and Yes Work Guide in the Canine Composure Training Community. You'll find a step by step guide featuring a variety of videos that will teach you exactly how to get here! Link in bio or

I see a lot of people who want to go straight to off leash hikes or running around a field, etc. And I get that because that's where the fun is, right?

But you MUST build a solid foundation with your dog before moving to these difficult environments. Because the foundation builds the follower mindset, and if you don't have that, then things are more difficult than they need to be.

Also, if your dog is struggling in these difficult environments, then we go back to the foundation and build them up. But if they have no foundation to fall back on, then they'll fall apart or blow you off.

You have to learn to walk before you can run! You have your dog for their life, so what's the rush? Take your time to build the foundation. So that when you're ready for more difficult environments, it's easy, and you and your dog can enjoy yourselves!

This summer has been wonderful.

I'm happiest when I'm outside with the dogs. My college dog was a fantastic hiking buddy. We hiked all over the Blue Ridge Mountains together, and we had a very strong bond because of it. Me and him. Always together.

Yesterday was 2 years without him, and it was a perfect day. We took Vader up to the mountains and hiked a trail that Rusty and I had done many times over the years. And Vader was so good.

I am so proud of how far he has come. There was a time that I thought he'd never be able to handle a hike or handle being off leash. I didn't trust him at all.

Yet here we are, living the lifestyle I dreamed of with him.

I'm blessed to have had an easy dog like Rusty during my college years. I'm blessed to currently have a little maniac in Vader because he's made me an excellent trainer. And I'm blessed that because of him, I get to help more people like you who struggle with their dogs. I get to show yall how to reach the lifestyle you hope for with your dogs.

I get to help you enjoy life with your dog. Because to me, that's what it's all about!

06/28/2024

During training, don't forget to take time to enjoy your dog! That's why we get them, right? To enjoy the lifestyle we can have with them.

So get outside together this weekend. Go have fun with your dog ☀️

Socialization isn't just meeting a bunch of dogs! It's getting used to the sights, sounds, smells, textures, etc. of the world around us!

Yesterday was trash day. Stanley is a little nervous about things, so we went outside during trash pick up. I had no clue how he'd act, but I knew if he got spooked, I could step in with leash work and calm him down. He did great and I couldn't be more proud!

As a trainer, I can:

✨️Give your dog a good foundation
✨️Practice things with your dog that will help you reach your goals
✨️Give you as much knowledge as I possibly can
✨️Teach you how to navigate different moments with your dog
✨️Teach you how to communicate with your dog

As a trainer, I cannot:

✨️Make you do the homework and practice regularly

I'll get you 95% of the way there, but at some point, you have to take the reigns. At some point, you have to commit to the changes and the training and decide to keep growing with your dog. The growth potential for you and your dog is endless if you put in the practice.

Working with a trainer can absolutely make your life with your dog easier, and I highly recommend it 😉

However, we can do all of the things you ask, but if you don't make changes within the home and if you don't put in the practice, then you've paid for your dog to listen really well to the trainer. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I've seen it happen, and I hate that for the families and the dog because I know they're selling themselves short. Training is work. It's repetitive. It's practice. And it takes a while. But it's always worth it!

You will never see me drop the leashes and let the dogs run straight over to each other. Ever. That energy is way too hyper, and it's a rude greeting.

Vader can easily come on strong with other dogs, and we've worked very hard to teach him how to greet other dogs appropriately (calm, loose leash, nose to butt not nose to nose)

Appropriate greetings keep everyone safe. I ALWAYS walk dogs together before I let them interact off leash. It allows them to get a feel for one another without putting a ton of pressure on them to interact. They can smell each other briefly while we're walking if they want, but it's not just about that. They're also able to read one anothers body language, and I am as well.

Once we hit a point where they really don't even care about each other, that's when leashes come off, and I let them interact. And if the energy ever gets too high, I call them over to me for a quick break.

I know this sounds excessive to some, but look at Vader. He's a powerful breed. A breed that people are scared of. It's my job as his owner to set him and others up for success. And to me, that means taking it slow with introductions and making sure the dogs are calm and comfortable before with one another before I allow play time.

What's your go to way to introduce dogs?

Happy Training!

CONSISTENCY!!

Every day. Every time.

If you (and your dog) are learning something new, you don't practice it once and then expect to fully know it. That doesn't make sense.

Ideally, you practice it multiple times a day until you have a solid understanding of whatever it is you're learning. A new language, a new skill in the gym, new eating habits etc.

Now switch it to you and your dog. Both learning an entirely new way of living with one another. You want to see progress?? Be consistent with your rules, boundaries and practice. Stick with it until you hit a point where you might not need to practice so much. Until you hit a point where it becomes a habit and a way of life between you and your dog.

Now, obviously, changing the way you hold the leash won't solve all of your leash problems, but it's a step in the right direction.

If we spend all of this time teaching our dogs to be sensitive to leash pressure and then we go on a walk and add a ton of pressure in the leash then what was the point of doing all of that training!

Your dog feels that tension, and your dog can feel how tense you are. Try going outside and only focusing on how tense your arm is. It's probably happening a lot more than you think it is. If you're really tense, pause and literally shake it out. Get the tension out of your body! Take a few deep breaths and start walking again.

You got this!

Yes. For every breed!

06/04/2024

Here's your answer!

By leaving him in our bedroom, he was able to look out the front window and bark at anything that passed by our house. Since we weren't home, we weren't able to interrupt the barking. Luckily, it's a super quick fix. We just went back to putting him back in the crate while we're gone, and his alert barking isn't an issue anymore.

However, if we had left this unchecked, it could have grown into him being reactive again on walks, and we would have had to work harder to fix the problem. When we're home, we let him look out the window if he wants to because if he does happen to bark, it's usually just one, and I can easily stop him. When he's alone, though, he can't stop himself, so it's best to prevent him from getting worked up in the first place.

I like this example because it shows how the smallest change can impact behavior. It also shows that reactivity has just as much to do with what goes on inside the house as it does with what goes on during walks.

Did you guess correctly?
