I really don't like making a nervous dog just sit there in their nervous feelings. I like to get them physically moving and help get that nervous energy out.

If it was up to Bogey, he would have stayed in the crate. But that does nothing to help him, and eventually, he'll need to get out.

In the first attempt, he only came halfway out.
The second attempt took about 20 minutes to get him out.
Third attempt, he walked right out 🙂

Once he got moving, his entire energy changed. He was obviously still nervous and unsure, but he was using his nose and exploring his surroundings. This is good!

Two things I never did with him were to crouch in front of him and talk in a baby voice. That doesn't help him! Me getting right in front of him and staring into his eyes would have only put a lot of pressure on him and made him more uncomfortable.

The only thing that I did that I usually don't do for nervous dogs is use treats. And I ONLY did it because his leash came off while he was in the crate, and it was either reach into his crate and grab his collar or be patient and hope that treats would get him out. Using treats was the safer option for us, so that's what i did. Normally, though, I have the leash on, open the crate, and we got right outside and get moving.

I can't wait to see sweet boy become confident!

I remember texting a friend while literally walking up to a clients house that I had no money in my account and didn't know what I was going to do. I went for a trip for my birthday and I didn't have to take any time off. I had no clients at the time. This summer almost did me in. I was so scared and mad and embarrassed that I did this to my business. I didn't plan on EVER telling anyone any of this, but here we are, lol

I eventually decided that I wasn't going down without a fight. I'm meant to work with animals, and I wasn't going to stop just because I had a bad summer.

A slow summer forced me to get my act together and start acting like a business owner. Not an employee. It's a daily reminder for me, and I'm still not great at it. It's very easy for me to get caught up in the small day to day things and get behind on big picture stuff.

I went from debating getting another job to buying a van(which is still wild, lol), hosting pack walks, and being more confident in my ability to help people.

I'm beyond thankful for this year and for what I went through. I'm thankful for the people around me who lifted me up. And I'm especially thankful for the clients that I did have and currently have. Yall are the reason I kept kicking when things were rough.

I absolutely can't wait for 2025. It's gonna be a good one 🖤

Goodbye November, Hello December 👋🏻

Dogs, family, and food pretty much sums up November.

Dogs have always been and will always be a part of my life. They're not going anywhere.

I try, however, to do things without dogs sometimes. I actually went to a family Thanksgiving and didn't bring dogs! Shocking, right?

I also try to find hobbies that don't include dogs. Cooking and working out are both things that I do for myself. It's the only time I can shut off and not think about the many dogs that I see every day.

Don't get me wrong, training dogs is so much fun, and I love it. But going through training with your dog can also bring up a lot of other emotions, and it can be physically tiring as well. It's important that we find time to do things just for us simply because we like to do them.

And for me, that's cooking and moving my body. What about you? What's something you do simply because you enjoy it?

Trying to take pictures of moments that make me happy. No surprise that most of them include dogs 🖤🖤🖤

And they love every second of it 🥰

Calm observation is definitely something that we should practice with our dogs! Being able to process the world calmly is super important and makes life so much easier for both you and your dog.

If you want a patio dog, do this.
If you want a dog that's calm when people come over, do this.
If you want a dog that doesn't react on walks, do this.
If you want a dog that you can easily take out in public, do this.

I promise it will pay off and help your dog have a calm, neutral mind.

Happy Training!

Lunch breaks are quiet and peaceful. And I love every second of it 🖤

Happy Halloween!! 🎃

I hope it's wonderfully spooky!! ☠️

Also, remember that time I decided I'd make and sell dog bandanas, and it lasted all of 5 minutes. Good times. 🤣

Did your dog dress up this year? I wanna know all the costumes!

Don't ask me how I got here because I literally have no clue. 😁

I've always been someone who gets stuck in the planning stage. I like to make sure things are perfect in theory before actually moving forward with an idea. Downside of that is that nothing actually gets done lol

So, in this case. I planned absolutely nothing. I went with my gut and decided I'd figure it out, and I went, and here we are. I needed more space for my day trains, so a van it is!

Is it perfect? No. It needs some love and converting it to how i want it will take time. But she's ready to hold crates, treats, fans, leashes, place boards, and most importantly, dogs.

So everyone. Meet Maeve. The newest addition to Canine Composure Family Dog Training 🖤

You're about to get a lot of van conversion content 😂

I give a lot of face to face advice on a daily basis, so I figured I'd share some with yall!

1. Let your dog rest after eating in order to avoid bloat. Definitely more of a risk for larger breeds or deep chested breeds. However, any dog in my care is resting for an hour after meals. Rest allows food to properly digest and adds a nice bit of structure to your dog's routine. If your dog won't rest, you can feed them in their crate and then leave them be for a little while longer.

2. Getting two puppies at the same time can cause Littermate Syndrome. It won't always, but it's not something I would risk. One puppy can be a lot more socially reserved and kind of always in the background or worse, they can start fighting each other. It's definitely something I don't recommend.

3. If you're getting frustrated or you've had a stressful day, pause and breathe. The more frustrated you are, the shorter you'll be with your dog, and that's no longer a productive lesson. It's okay to walk away for a minute to reset. It's okay to crate your dog so you can have a moment to regroup. It's also okay to completely end a lesson and try again later once you're in a better mindset. Give yourself grace ❤️

Not me wanting to cry while making this. 🤣

I feel so lucky that I get to be surrounded by so many dogs. They're so special, and we're fortunate to be able to spend our lives with them ❤️
