Meet Santi 🐾
This sweet 2-year-old kitty had been feeling pretty awful — several weeks of vomiting, poor appetite, and weight loss. After multiple vet visits and X-rays, Santi’s family and Dr. Koballa decided it was time for exploratory surgery to find out what was going on.

During surgery, we discovered a chronic intussusception — when one section of intestine slides inside another, kind of like a telescope folding in on itself. This can block the flow of food and cause serious illness.

To fix it, we performed a resection and anastomosis, which means we carefully removed the damaged portion of intestine and reconnected the healthy ends so everything flows normally again.

💛 Santi made a speedy recovery — he was eating within hours of surgery and is now back to his happy, zoomy self!

⚠️ Warning: The next slides include surgical photos.

🌟 Happy Vet Tech Week to our incredible team! 🌟

Behind every calm patient, smooth surgery, and happy tail wag is an extraordinary crew who pour their hearts into every single day. ❤️

From drawing blood and monitoring anesthesia to comforting nervous pups and caring for hospitalized patients, this team does it all — with compassion, skill, and so much love.

✨ Caitlin – our rockstar lead tech and professor at the local tech college, training the next generation of vet techs.
✨ Jesse – remarkably thorough, deeply invested in each appointment, and caring beyond measure.
✨ Jabril – soothing even the most anxious babies with her calm, inviting presence.
✨ Alicia – our soon-to-be two-time mama and office manager, keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
✨ Hatlee – gentle, intuitive, and a natural with every animal she meets.
✨ Sam – holding down the front lines and answering every call with empathy and patience.

This team celebrates every healing, mourns every loss, and loves your pets as their own. 💕 There are more hugs behind the scenes than in the exam rooms — and that’s exactly how it should be.

🐾 Drop a shoutout below to your favorite team member or share how they’ve made a difference for your pet! 🩺💫

Why the Cone Matters After Surgery

After a pet has surgery, one of the most important parts of healing is protecting the incision. That’s where the “cone” (also called an Elizabethan collar or e-collar) comes in.

It may look a little silly, but here’s why it’s so important:

- Pets naturally want to lick, chew, or scratch at their incision. Even a few seconds can reopen stitches or introduce infection.
- Licking does not “help it heal” — it actually delays healing and can cause serious complications.
- Many surgeries require strict incision protection for 10–14 days.

Today, there are many options beyond the traditional plastic cone, including soft fabric cones, inflatable collars, and medical pet shirts. No matter the style, the goal is the same: keeping your pet safe while they heal.

If your pet has surgery, please keep their cone or protective option on as directed. It’s one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure a smooth recovery.

Why Do Some Dogs Need a C-Section?

Just like in people, sometimes a natural delivery doesn’t go as planned. At Charlotte Companion Animal Hospital, our top priority is always the safety of both mom and her puppies.

A C-section (cesarean section) may be needed if:

- Labor isn’t progressing as it should.
- A puppy is too large to pass through the birth canal.
- Mom has been pushing for a long time without delivering.
- Certain breeds (such as Bulldogs, Frenchies, and other brachycephalic breeds) are at higher risk for complications.
- Mom or puppies show signs of distress.

While most dogs deliver naturally, our team is prepared to step in when necessary. A timely C-section can make the difference between life and loss, and it’s one of the ways veterinary medicine helps bring healthy puppies safely into the world.

Because every life matters.

🐾💙 Things You Might Not Know About Veterinarians 💙🐾

Most people know veterinarians give vaccines and help when pets are sick—but here are some things that might surprise you about the work we do every day at Charlotte Companion Animal Hospital.

Veterinarians are also:

Dentists- Vets are trained to perform dental cleanings, x-rays, and even extractions. Oral health is a huge part of your pet’s overall health.

Surgeons- From spays and neuters to removing masses or repairing wounds, your veterinarian is also skilled in the operating room.

Pharmacists- Veterinarians prescribe, dose, and manage medications for everything from pain control to chronic diseases.

Radiologists & lab techs- X-rays, ultrasounds, bloodwork, and in-house lab tests are often interpreted directly by your veterinarian.

Educators- Every exam includes teaching—whether it’s puppy training tips, diet recommendations, or helping you understand lab results.

They're also compassionate guides- One of the hardest (but important) parts of their job is supporting families through end-of-life care with dignity and love.

Behind every appointment, there’s a veterinarian wearing many hats—all to keep tails wagging and purrs going strong.
