Your purchase of a well bred purebred does not sentence another dog to death.

Your purchase of a well bred purebred does not cause an increase in the number of dogs in shelter.

You wanting a dog with a predictable temperament from healthy lineage does not cause another dog to not get adopted.

Your meticulous research and support of only the most responsible of breeders is not the problem. It is not what others should be mad at. It is not what others should be pushing the blame onto.

You are not the one who brought these unwanted dogs into the world irresponsibly and left them in a shelter. Responsible breeders are not the ones who put dogs into shelters either.

It is your home, your life, and your choice of what kind of dog to bring into it. Maybe you needed a working dog, a sport dog, or simply a companion puppy to raise of a breed you enjoy. No matter the reason, your choice to support a reputable breeder did not send a shelter dog to its death.

A breeder who health tests, temperament tests, studies pedigrees, proves a dog worthy of being bred, and only breeds when doing so is of benefit to the breed is not contributing to the number of homeless dogs.

The number of homeless dogs in the world is a problem, but it is not a problem exacerbated by reputable breeders and those who purchase from them.

Your neighbor down the street who refuses to contain his unaltered dogs IS contributing to the problem.

Your friend who impulse bought a dog at PetLand IS contributing to the problem.

That guy on Craigslist pumping out the trendiest designer mix as fast as he can IS contributing to the problem.

Your friend or relative who just HAS to let their dog have one litter “so she can experience motherhood” or because “she’s just so sweet” IS contributing to the problem.

Your old high school classmate who bought a high energy working breed without taking the time to research its needs and realize it was not a good fit for their household ahead of time IS contributing to the problem.

A reputable breeder offers their lifelong support to every puppy they produce. A reputable breeder would never allow their dogs to end up in a shelter to begin with. A reputable breeder makes it a contractual obligation to return dogs they have produced back to them should you find yourself unable of keeping it.

It is understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you take a deeper look, you will find your anger is misplaced.

If you take a deeper look, you will find reputable breeders and those who purchase from them are just as angry, we are just pointing fingers at the right causes.

Adopt or shop.
Do your research.
Educate yourself on Retail Rescue.
Support responsible rescues or responsible preservation breeders.
Do what is BEST for YOU.
Just do it responsibly.

Socializing Puppies and Understanding Why It's Not always recommended to Allow Strangers to Pet Your Cane Corso Puppy in every situation:

Cane Corsos are mostly known for their protective instincts and extreme loyalty. As a responsible owner, it's crucial to recognize that these guardian tendencies are deeply ingrained in their DNA and it's vital to take this into consideration when raising this breed specifically. Therefore while socializing your Cane Corso puppy it may not be in their best interest to allow strangers to pet them or give them treats in some circumstances. In this post, we'll explain why it's not recommended for this breed and provide tips on how new owners can handle these situations with strangers when out in public.

Guardian Genetics:

Cane Corsos are well-known as formidable guardians. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D., the war dogs had to transition to civilian life. They found new roles as farm guardians and were stationed in the fields and pastures of Italy. Their primary duty was to safeguard livestock from potential predators and deter trespassers from entering the property. These guardian instincts are still embedded in their DNA today. Therfore when strangers approach you and your Corso, they may react interpreting it as a potential threat, especially if the encounter is unfamiliar or overwhelming.

Respecting Their Genetics:

Responsible ownership entails respecting your dog's genetics and what they were bred for. For instance, allowing strangers to approach and interact with your Cane Corso may trigger anxiety or overprotectiveness, potentially leading to undesirable reactivity behaviors which is often misunderstood by most people and mistaken for aggression. Owners need to understand these natural instincts and not put them into certain situations that may trigger their genetics and set them up for failure.

Handling Stranger's Requests:
1. Educate: When strangers express an interest in petting your Cane Corso, explain to the stranger that your puppy is in training to become a well-behaved adult and needs controlled socialization. If they insist you may take a moment to continue to educate them about the breed's guardian tendencies while asking them to respect your space.

2. Use a Command: You can put your puppy into a sit position while stepping in front of them and putting yourself in between the stranger and your puppy. This is advocating for your puppy's well-being. This also communicates to your puppy/dog that YOU are a confident leader and in control of the situation. For example use a word like "Friend", "Easy" or "Gentle" to help them learn the appropriate behaviors when in these situations and signal to strangers that your puppy or adult Corso should not be approached.

3. Socialization techniques: When it comes to socializing your puppy PROPERLY you are ONLY "exposing" it to different environments around other things, sounds, people and animals while they are taught how to behave properly and calmly while focused on you as their leader.

4. Positive Exposure: Gradually expose your Cane Corso to various people and situations in a positive and controlled manner, ensuring they build confidence and trust.

5. Set Boundaries: Don't hesitate to say "no" when necessary. Your dog's well-being should always be your top priority. Politely decline requests to pet your puppy, emphasizing that you're helping them become a well-adjusted and obedient companion.

Common triggers:
1) Kids and their fast movements like running, yelling, and screaming around your puppy
2) Strangers walking up to you fast and putting their hand out to pet

Other reasons not to allow strangers to give treats:
1) Unknown ingredients in treats can cause stomach upset resulting in diarrhea and/or allergic reactions
2) Our dogs can read people's vibes better than we can. We never know what our dogs are sensing at that moment. (maybe that person has a mental issue, health issues, or had a bad day, and if that person has a vibe about them that triggers your dogs to react for whatever reason and potentially bite that person then it's GAME OVER and you and your dog are to blame. Not worth it!

As responsible Cane Corso owners, understanding and respecting their guardian's genetics is essential. While proper socialization techniques are crucial, it's equally important to take into consideration your puppy's comfort and safety in certain environments.

Tips:
Take advantage of your Veterinary visits while your there with your puppy during their puppy exams. This is the perfect opportunity to teach your puppy how to behave while the Veterinary staff are examining and handling your puppy thru proper restraint techniques. Reward your puppy for being calm and cooperative in these situations.

Being proactive in your puppies training, educating strangers, using commands, and setting boundaries in each circumstance are effective ways to advocate for your Corso puppy while instilling their confidence in your leadership. By following these tips, you'll help your Cane Corso puppy grow into a well-balanced and confident canine companion.
