Pigs are magical and Eli is no exception. He is a beautiful spotted guy, smart as a whip and excels opening doors, and will never ever turn down a snack. Era calls him a "mamma's boy" as he has a specific soft spot for her in his heart. Pigs are very emotional creatures and Eli has seen things that no pig should see. He was found after being dumped at a nature preserve all alone. As part of his recovery from his trauma, he has found a best friend and snuggle buddy with Julian pig, he loves and trusts Era above all others, and loves being free to roam the sanctuary at his leisure. Doesn't mean he can't get into trouble, but that just shows you how clever he really is.

Kindness isn’t just a word—it’s a way of life. On , we’re celebrating Bonnie, an older goat who was rescued from slaughter. She is special needs due to having a meningeal parasite when she was young. She now thrives in a place of love and safety. She is a favorite of volunteers and visitors as she is so friendly💕 When we choose kindness, we give animals like Bonnie the life they deserve.

How do animals get to the sanctuary? They are sometimes abused or neglected, sometimes abandoned, and often they are no longer wanted as they lost their "use" on a traditional farm. Von was a prized Icelandic brood mare who was incredibly valuable, until she could no longer be used in this fashion as she got older. She is a special, special horse. Known across New England, she is gorgeous and her calm nature is so endearing. Von is very best friends with Tessa and you can see them often doing a little mutual grooming. Von's breeding is impeccable and her Icelandic coat in the winter is impressive! Send a little love to Von on this fall day and to all other sanctuary animals.

Ducks are intelligent, social creatures who thrive in a safe and caring environment. They form strong bonds with each other, and just like all animals, they deserve a place to call home.

We introduced you to our new intake, Tiz, earlier this week. He really needs our help as he is trying to get back to normal health. We are working super closely with our vets, giving him 6+ meds per day, making him as comfortable as possible with boots and wrapping his hooves and legs.

A tribute to Harry who came to the sanctuary last summer with his sister, Sally. They were sick little chicks - jumbo cornish - who came to us from the feed store. He got better and grew so fast and so big even on a limited diet. Normal chicken lifespans can be 8 or more years, but his breed of chicken is typically slaughtered within about three months. His heart gave out today at only 5 months old. We are so sorry, Harry!
This is a reminder to think about your eating choices, these animals' bodies cannot sustain their growth and have no chance of living a natural life even if they are rescued. Spread compassion.

Pig hoof trim day to keep our piggies moving and grooving. Thanks and The Farrier Group.

Hoof trimming is so important to keep pigs healthy. Think of all that weight on those little hooves. At the same time we trim hooves, we also vaccinate. Thank you Dr Sarah for helping us do that so seamlessly!

Turkeys are highly intelligent animals who, just like the dogs and cats in our homes, are playful individuals with unique personalities. They know their names, have emotions, feel pain, express sorrow and happiness. Each of our five Turkeys at Merrymac Farm Sanctuary have distinctive personalities. Most people who visit the sanctuary get to be closer to a turkey then they have ever been allowing them to see their true beauty.

Facts about Turkeys:
46 million Turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving
Turkeys heads change colors depending on the emotions they are feeling
Turkeys have very good eyesight– 3x better than humans
Turkeys also have very good hearing.
Both male and females gobble
$35 (about the same price as a turkey dinner) covers the costs of a bag of feed, a bale of hay for bedding, and some scratch grain/produce

PLUTO who was born to a mom who was breed for Premarin production. Much like a dairy cow Premarin brood mares are kept pregnant and their urine is collected while they are kept in small stalls to limit their movement. Pluto is in his mid-twenties and he was one of the lucky babies who was allowed to survive. PMU production has changed in the more developed countries, but it still happens around the globe. Pluto is the sweetest most gentle boy in the whole wide world-- he has stolen many people hearts💕

We are so proud to announce that we were awarded a grant from

Last year we embarked on a project to create a heated and cooled room for a classroom space and to help house our fragile bunnies. We have done so much in this room already: toddler story hour events, piglet's Birthday party, a heated and cooled spot for volunteers and staff to take a break, installed a new fridge, and the list goes! The generous grant from SCHIP Store will help us continue to work on this space, including an awning for the doorway to help with the buildup of ice and snow. And a handicap accessible ramp. This is the next step in our build and will allow more of the community to access the farm when they come for events.

The final step will be a bathroom and running water. But that will have to wait.

The sound of a perfect morning @merrymacfarmsanctuary

$6 Saturday goes to our new rescue, Arthur, who was surrendered to the sanctuary a couple of weeks ago. It is clear that Arthur's came from a situation where there was neglect from a lack of education or resources. Help get this little guy back on track!!! He has already had two vet visits since he came to us. He is a middle aged lion head lop rabbit who is not neutered. He came in with a major issue going on with one of his eyes. He has an infection or issue with his 3rd eyelid that we are treating and may need surgery. He has been lethargic, has had some digestive issues, and will need to be neutered. Our little Arty has been such a sweetheart through it all. We need all the love and best wishes sent his way. Poor little thing doesn't deserve this particular hand he is currently being dealt.
