🐾 Around the holidays, we see an uptick in emergencies related to family gatherings where dogs are fed (or steal from a plate👀) foods that are bad for their health. While there are some foods your pup can have alongside you at your Thanksgiving feast, it is important to note the ones they shouldn't consume.

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD)

What: group of disorders affecting the urinary system

Who: cats of any age but most commonly middle-ages older male cats

Why: multifactorial but stress plays a huge role! Common causes include
- Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC): inflammatory often triggered by stress
- Urolithiasis (bladder stones): often preceded by crystals in the urine
- UTI: bacterial infection

Clinical Signs: straining, small frequent urination, vocalization, excessive ge***al licking, urinating outside the little box, bloody urine

Diagnosis: lab testing and imaging
- Urinalysis: looking at a urine sample under the microscope to detect bacteria, blood, white blood cells, crystals, etc
- Abdominal Ultrasound: detect grit/sediment and bladder stones as well as evaluate the bladder wall lining
- Radiographs: most bladder stones will show up on an X-ray

Treatment: widely depends on cause of FLUTD
- Antibiotics and Anti-inflammatories
- Pain medications
- Diet change
- Surgery
- Environmental stress reduction
- Anti-anxiety medications

Prevention: multifactorial
easy access to fresh clean water
- 1+ litterbox than number of cats
- Diet change to maintain urinary health
- Stress reduction (appeasing pheromones, calming probiotics, mental stimulation, reduce routine changes

If your kitty is having urinary concerns, make an appoint with your vet as quickly as possible. If prolonged or left untreated, this can turn into a urinary blockage which is a true, life-threatening emergency 🆘 🚨

Join us in celebrating National Cat Day! 🎉🐱💛

🐾 Today, we want to share the heartwarming stories of two incredible kittens who found their way into our GoodVets clinics and eventually, their forever homes.

🐾 Meet Olive, who was found in the bushes outside of GoodVets Apex, lost, scared, and alone. She captured the hearts of every member of the Apex team, so much in fact that she even starred in the photoshoot! The name Olive suited her perfectly as the Apex clinic sits on Olive Chapel Road. It didn't take long for a client to fall in love with her as well and adopt her into her fur-ever home where she will never be left alone again!

🐾 Arya was found in a car dealership parking lot and was seconds away from being run over by a truck. One of the dealership managers quickly saved her from being run over and placed her in the bushes, where he thought her mother might be. Being in South Florida, it began to rain and the poor kitten was sitting there crying out for help for over an hour. Arya was brought to GoodVets Delray and put up for adoption. Fortunately, one of our own staff members fell in love and has decided to keep Arya. She is now forever part of the GoodVets family! 💛

🐾 These two amazing felines remind us of the incredible bond between humans and cats and we were honored to play a roll in their stories. Happy National Cat Day! 🐈
