Did you know that the Critter Crew’s nonprofit reptile rescue, Cold Blooded & Bizarre Outreach does free relocations of venomous snakes and other nuisance creatures?
Check out this beautiful “Hershey kiss” pattern of the venomous eastern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) that the Critter Crew recently helped a customer extract from their crawl space and relocate deep into the heavily wooded property adjacent to their home!
Copperheads are in the viper family, and although their venom is rarely if ever fatal to humans, posses an extremely painful bite. They are opportunistic carnivores, preying on a wide variety of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and even invertebrates! It’s noteworthy to mention that, despite their fearsome reputation, at no point while we were interacting with this beautiful animal did she ever strike or display any sort of defensive behavior. During the entirety of our interactions she merely wanted to get away and be left alone, and we are happy to have been able to help!
Do not try this at home! We do not recommend interacting with copperheads or other venomous species without proper training. 9/10 snakebites can be avoided by giving the animal space and leaving it alone. These situations are always best handled by professionals.
If you have a venomous snake or otherwise unwanted animal on your property, shoot a message to our social media, or call the shop, and we’ll do our best to come out and help you safely deal with the situation ASAP! We offer this service free of charge, though donations to our rescue and/or gratuities are always very much appreciated!

What animal has the best natural camouflage in your opinion?
Check out how well the Copes grey tree frog (Dryophytes chrysoscelis) blends into the grey bricks on the Critter Crew’s porch! This beautiful amphibian had been sitting silently by the light, preying on all the unsuspecting insects that were attracted to its glow. As with all of the wild creatures that discover, this awesome frog was left undisturbed, after a quick photoshoot.

Have you ever rescued a turtle?
Check out the beautiful yellow patterns on the eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) that the Critter Crew recently helped a customer return to it’s home range. This beautiful terrapin is a protected native species. If you happen to encounter one of these amazing animals in the wild, please leave them be. If a turtle happens to be crossing a road, help it across in the direction that it was were traveling. Under no circumstances should you pick it up to keep as a pet or release it at a different location. This species has a home range about the size of a football field. They also have an internal GPS that will always try to bring them back to that location. When relocated, these amazing animals will cross every river, road, and highway in an effort to return to their familiar plot of turf. Oftentimes they never make it, as this journey home results in fatal interactions with traffic and other anthropogenic dangers.
After a few quick photographs, this beautiful turtle was safely released in the forest preserve bordering the yard where it was initially discovered!

Take a look at the adorable baby loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that a friend of ours stumbled across as they made their first trip to the ocean outside of Charleston one night last week! Needless to say, the Critter Crew is beyond jealous of this once in a lifetime, absolute dream of an animal encounter!

Did you know that snake venom is extremely important in modern medicine?
Check out how our new friend Ted and his daughter expertly handle their eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) collection during a venom extraction demonstration at the Edisto Island Serpentarium! Snake venom contains components that have been used to treat cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, strokes, pain, blood pressure, and lots more! Venom has even has been used to cosmetically treat wrinkles.
It’s important to remember that any sort of interaction with venomous animals should be left to the professionals. Our friend Ted from the has a lifetime of experience with these beautiful and misunderstood creatures, please do not try this at home.

Did you know that most venomous snakes in the southeast have brightly colored tails when they’re babies?
Take a look at the lime green tail on the baby eastern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix) that the Critter Crew’s nonprofit Cold Blooded & Bizarre Outreach recently helped a friend safely relocate! Only present on baby vipers, this vibrantly colored appendage is known as a caudal lure, and will fade as the snake matures. This unusual adaptation mimics a small worm and helps to entice prey animals into strike range.

Have you ever seen an armadillo up close?
Take a look at the amazing armored skin of the nine banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) that the Critter Crew encountered while walking the road outside our team trip Airbnb the other night. Although we were searching for reptiles, this unusual mammal came trotting out of the woods directly towards us. The oblivious little creature walked within two feet of my right foot before looking up and noticing that we were standing right there, flashlights in hand. I suppose that when you’re covered in naturally protective armor you don’t need to be quite as vigilant of your surroundings as other, less durable creatures.

Take a look at the beautiful yellow belly scales on the ringneck snake (Diadophis punctatus) that the Critter Crew discovered just outside our Airbnb where we’re staying for our annual team trip! These awesome little colubrids are relatively common, but seldomly seen as they’re nocturnal & spend most of their time underground. These adorable little snakes primarily prey on slugs & worms, but have also been known to eat smaller salamanders, frogs, lizards, & even tiny snakes! As with all of the wildlife that we encounter, this bitesized beauty was released, unharmed, after everyone on the team got to see it and get some pictures!

What’s the most colorful reptile that you’ve ever seen?
Check out the eye-popping fiery red and orange coloration on the ambilobe panther chameleon (Furcifer pardalis) that the Critter Crew hatched from an egg relinquished to us by a customer after impulse buying it at a reptile expo. He really has grown since hatching a year ago as a tiny camouflage-brown baby! This process is known as an ontogenetic color change, and happens with many reptile species, though not many are this colorfully extreme!
