Hello NCPOS Members and Friends...

Sadly, we have to cancel the January meeting that was scheduled for this weekend. Steven's Creek has lost power and the immanent storm is threatening bad conditions on the road.

We look forward to seeing everyone for the Steve Arthur program in February.

Happy growing and how to see you all soon.

Sad to report that long-time member of the NCPOS and the orchid community, Don Osborne has passed away at the age of 88. Here is a brief orchid-centric memorium written by Harry Gallis

Don was involved in orchids at least back into the 70’s, maybe earlier. He was a member of the NC Orchid Society and the Piedmont Carolinas Orchid Society well prior to their merger in the early 90’s to become NCPOS. Apparently the first show was at a bank (in Gastonia??, not sure where). The NCOS met in a member’s house on Sunday’s from Asheville to Wilmington and the members must have made a weekend of it. Don knew many of the orchid growers in the South and at one time he and Betty, before they were married, visited Leora Hewlett and her husband in Beaufort SC (Casa Luna Orchids, originators of Sc Beaufort). She was one of the pillar judges of the Southern Region Center in Atlanta. Don was the first judge from the Carolinas and the founding Chair of our center. He was always a stickler for the rules, having trained in Atlanta in the ‘good old days’! When the students from NC started traveling to Atlanta (Robin Mentha, David Devine, Cynthia van der Wiele and Billy Perryman) they used to go through Gastonia and pick up Don for the 6 hour trip to Atlanta. That was still happening in the early 90’s when I became a student. Don was chair of an EOC show in Asheville at the Grove Park Inn in 1981 and was probably a student at the time because he was not listed in AQ as one of the judges.

If anyone would like to send condolences, the address is:

FREE ORCHID ALERT!

I have a bunch of no-tag orchids that need a good home before thee freeze. Many paphs, a dendrobium and a few other odds and ends. They all need repotting and maintenence, but a good chance to try a plant without splashing cash.

I am in North CLT at the top of 485. Today is better.

Take a few or all.

Text only (phone is acting weird)

Unfortunately, due to the uptick in coronavirus cases, the November AOS judging session that was scheduled to be held at DSBG this weekend has been canceled. The December date has not officially been canceled but is at risk.

Check their website for more details. http://www.carolinasjudgingcenter.org/

Be safe and hope to see everyone soon.

Hello NCPOS Members and Friends..

I am going to be placing an order for some potting media through the Acadia Supply Orchid Society program, and wanted to open it up to the community. It is a great way to get your orchid potting media like Orchiata, Treefern, and Spagmoss while supporting the society too.

If you are interested in a bag or two (or many) please fill out the google form at the link below by 9am Monday morning (7/5) or email me at [email protected]. I do not need any payment up front, and no problem if you have to cancel. 10% of all sales will be donated back to the society. Prices are listed in the link below.

I will be purchasing probably about a dozen bags of some of the Orchiata and Treefern to have on hand and can dose them out in gallon size bags at future meetings. Orders will be available around the middle of July I think.

Stay safe and looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
