❤️🩹IN LOVING MEMORY OF
HELEN OF TROY 🕊️
🖤💔 It’s with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of Helen of Troy’s passing. This sweet girl lost her battle with complications from the parvo virus. When we brought her home from CVS, I was filled with hope. She had started eating on her own and seemed to be improving. Unfortunately, she was just too little, and her body couldn’t recover.
In the days following her loss, I found myself questioning my decision to bring her home. Perhaps if I had kept her at the ER vet a day or two longer. Maybe if I had admitted her the very first day she showed signs of trouble. These are painful “what ifs” that haunt my thoughts, and the reality is, I don’t have the answers. I did what I thought was right and fought as hard as I ever have for any dog.
What I do know is that Helen died in my arms, surrounded by love from this family. We did everything within our power for her, and I fought tirelessly for her well-being. But her loss feels senseless, especially in light of the circumstances surrounding her rescue. This rescue does a ton if senior hospice and although when the end comes for our seniors it’s sad, it’also comes with knowing we gave them the BEST end to their lives we could. Helens end was not that. She came home swollen from all the pokes in her arm where the hospital was taking blood. She was getting depressed due to being in isolation without having someone just touch her. All she wanted was to be held.
The politics of animal rescue can be disheartening. When I first learned of Helen’s plight at the Chesterfield Animal Shelter in SC, I stepped up immediately. Here was a 5-week-old puppy in a facility marred by disease and neglect, with only four weary staff members struggling to cope. Unfortunately, I was informed that a northern rescue had priority, delaying her rescue for 17 days! Only to be contacted later, five days after a parvo outbreak began, asking if we could take her. Helen sat alone in a shelter longer than she should have, leading to this tragic outcome.
This community must demand change. We need laws requiring spaying and neutering, and we must hold irresponsible pet owners and backyard breeders accountable. I refuse to pay for someone’s greed and ignorance any longer. Helen’s life mattered, as do the countless others who suffered because of systemic failure in our rescue system.
Rest in peace my sweet Helen. This family loved you and you will not be forgotten. We will fight to make sure that you do not die in vain. 💪🐾
