Some clips of Xena & Pepper beginning to learn “place”. Starting off I simply lure the dog towards the place bed. Once they step on to the place bed I mark (using a clicker and verbal “yesss” as markers) and then reward. In time I will put the behavior on cue word “place”, give less cues (allow them to go to place bed more on their own) and then slowly actually build in accountability as well. One stage at a time. 👍 Good pups!

Fear-reactive LEROY is hanging with me tonight while we watch some football. Working with fear-reactive/ fear-aggressive dogs is a balance: yes, we of course want to build trust & rapport, build the dog’s confidence , slowly expand the dog’s thresholds, etc but… we cannot ignore, look the other way or make excuses for the dog’s reactive behaviors. There needs to be accountability as well. Leroy needs to learn that we humans are in control: we will not put him in dangerous situations and/or situations he has no chance to be successful in. We will not push him too hard. At the same time: We human leaders will not tolerate any unwanted, unhealthy or unsafe behaviors. Just bc Leroy may feel a little anxious … a little insecure… a little unsure about a particular person, dog or situation does NOT give him the right to act out with reactivity and/or aggression. That behavior is not ok… it is not wanted, it is not healthy, and it is unsafe; therefore, it warrants accountability/consequences/corrections.

Again… it is a balance. And with balance we get more confident, more tolerant, more adaptable, better behaved, better socialized, happier and well… more balanced dogs 🙂

Note:

1. There are absolutely some fear reactive dogs that I would NOT be getting on the ground with so early on. Every dog is different. Ability to “Read” the dog and it’s mindset is important.

The 3 new recruits arrived this morning!

Xena: 5.5 month old Cane Corso puppy
Leory: 2.5 yr old Wheaten Terrier
Pepper: 3 yr old Husky- lab mix

Day 1 is all about getting to know the new recruits, slow dog introductions, and letting them settle into their new environment. Day 1 is goimg great!

Note: Wheaten Terrier LEROY struggles with some insecurity & reactivity issues. He can get fairly nervous around people he does not know well and/or dogs he doesn’t know well. So I will of course be taking things a bit slower with Leroy.

Follow along over the next several weeks to see all their progress!

Refreshing break towards the end of our 5 mile hike today. The water was nice and cool! This is my dogs’ favorite water play hole up at Stone Mtn. Any time weather is fitting, we always stop here for some play in the water & my dogs always start getting super excited when we are about 1/4 mile away from this spot… they know! 😂🐕🐕 🌊

Sawyer and I are back 💪 💪 Sawyer is doing well again with his joints since I got him back on his regular LIBRELA injections again (I will NEVER miss one of hos scheduled injections again- “night & day” difference) and my knees are FINALLY starting to recover after I accidentally hyperextended both of them while mtn biking about 2.5 months ago.

Getting back to normal… feels good 🐕 💪

Happy Tuesday! Dogs and I knocked out a good 4.5 mile hike at Crowders Mtn this morning. Happy dogs! 🐕🐕

*Sawyer's joints seem to be doing MUCH better again (we had a solid 2 month period of regression for a while) now that we have him back on his regularly scheduled LIBRELA injections. So thankful the meds/injections are working again 🙏
