Timber, a spirited 2-year-old German Shepherd, is celebrating a big milestone! Eight weeks ago, Timber underwent TPLO surgery with Dr. Stiffler after tearing his cruciate ligament during an unfortunate jump off the couch.

Timber began his rehabilitation journey with Kiah immediately after surgery. Despite the added challenge of bilateral hip dysplasia, which means he'll benefit from lifelong rehab support, Timber has shown incredible determination and resilience.

Join us in congratulating Timber on this major achievement!

Hunter's Blew By You, CGC, MH – "Blue", a proud Master Hunter, has an incredible journey! With a right collateral ligament augmentation in 2022 and a TPLO surgery with Dr. Schillinger in April 2024, she first came to rehab non-weight bearing at a trot after months of discomfort. Thanks to extensive rehab and her mom’s dedication, Blue has made an amazing comeback and is back to most of her favorite activities. She continues her hard work in rehab, building strength with hopes of returning to the field one day.

We’re so proud of your journey, Blue!

Padme underwent a bilateral TPLO surgery, performed by Dr. Stiffler in August 2024. When she began her rehab journey with Trish, Padme was a bit nervous, but with a Fear Free approach, she quickly came out of her shell. She let her true colors shine and excelled in every challenge we put in front of her. She became a favorite among the team for her incredible resilience and sweet personality. Congratulations on your achievements, Padme!

Hammy, a 3.5-year-old Mastiff mix, holds a special place in the hearts of the staff at VVS. Originally named Hambone, he was surrendered to a rural Virginia animal shelter about two years ago, suspected of having been hit by a car. He presented to our surgical department for lameness of his left rear leg and was found to have a host of orthopedic issues, including bilateral patellar luxation, dislocation of his left hip and bilateral elbow arthritis. Hammy underwent surgical correction for his dislocated left hip and luxating patella. During his recovery, he touched the heart of our CCRP, Trish, who fostered him and cared for him throughout his journey. After his recovery, Hammy was officially adopted by Hilliary, our Sub-Specialty Manager.

About a year later, Hammy began limping on his other rear leg, requiring another surgery to repair his luxating patella. Dr. Schillinger, who has been an amazing surgeon throughout this entire process, led both of Hammy's successful surgeries. Hammy underwent rehabilitation once again, with the person who initially saved him from the shelter providing the care he needed.

During rehab, Hammy would do anything for a treat, always showing his excitement. Coming to work with his mom, Hilliary, became his favorite day of the week, and he was always eager for his visits.

Although his rehab journey is ongoing, today marks a significant milestone as Hammy graduated from his most recent surgery. However, due to his elbow arthritis and past orthopedic issues, he will always need ongoing rehabilitation to maintain his comfort and strength. Hammy’s resilience, combined with the exceptional care from Dr. Schillinger, Trish, and the entire VVS team, continues to guide him on his path to wellness.

Meet Roxy, a sweet 9-year-old Lab and proud rehab graduate! She was diagnosed with GOLPP (Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy) and other health issues, for which she sees our internal medicine department. GOLPP affects the muscles in her throat, as well as her esophagus and hind limbs.

After a consultation with our CCRP, Kiah, her owners chose to start hydrotherapy. Throughout her rehab sessions, we focused on building her strength with indoor exercises, keeping her cool during the hottest summer months. Thanks to her hard work, Roxy’s stamina and recovery after each session have greatly improved. She’s come a long way, and we couldn’t be more proud!

As National Rehab Awareness Week comes to an end, we’re excited to highlight Biscuit, our 11-year-old Golden Retriever who shows us that ongoing rehabilitation care is just as important as post-surgery rehab! Biscuit has been coming for rehab and hydrotherapy since January to stay strong, active, and happy. His parents want to ensure he lives his best life for years to come, and Biscuit loves every minute of it! His favorite activities include the “Paws Up” exercise and the Underwater Treadmill. Rehab isn’t just for recovery; it’s also about enhancing quality of life!

Bella had a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) with Dr. Stiffler in June to repair her torn cruciate ligament and started rehab right away with Trish. Through consistent rehabilitation sessions that boosted her strength, mobility, and confidence, Bella regained full use of her leg in just 11 weeks post-op! Her enthusiasm during each session was truly inspiring, and the hard work and dedication from both Bella and her owner made all the difference in her remarkable recovery! Congratulations, Bella!
