As National Rehab Awareness Week comes to an end, we’re excited to highlight Biscuit, our 11-year-old Golden Retriever who shows us that ongoing rehabilitation care is just as important as post-surgery rehab! Biscuit has been coming for rehab and hydrotherapy since January to stay strong, active, and happy. His parents want to ensure he lives his best life for years to come, and Biscuit loves every minute of it! His favorite activities include the “Paws Up” exercise and the Underwater Treadmill. Rehab isn’t just for recovery; it’s also about enhancing quality of life!

We are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Zachary Crouse, DVM, DACVIM-SA to our Internal Medicine team.

Dr. Crouse completed his residency at Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston and remained on as a Staff Internal Medicine Specialist until relocating to Charlottesville this summer. He has a special interest in minimally invasive and interventional radiology procedures, which we hope to bring to our veterinary community in the near future.

Dr. Crouse enjoys the process of diagnosing and treating diseases in dogs and cats while guiding and educating their caretakers. He believes it is important to include caretakers, referring veterinarians, and the entire VVS team in order to diagnose and treat patients effectively.

Dexter began his journey to recovery at just 13 weeks old after a child accidentally fell on him, resulting in severe fractures. Despite two orthopedic surgeries to save his leg, it became clear that amputation was the best option for his quality of life. After his amputation in June, Dexter began rehab with our amazing rehab team, Kiah and Trish. Thanks to their care and his owners' dedication, he’s now faster, more agile, and happier than ever. He’s a true Husky spirit, even learning to swim with three legs! Dexter has come a long way, and we’re so proud of his progress! Congratulations, Dexter!

One of our Anesthesia LVTs, Amanda, had the amazing opportunity to intern in South Africa with Worldwide Vets. Worldwide Vets is a non-profit that works to promote animal welfare through a variety of programs. In Amanda's program, she was able to learn about wildlife conservation and use her skills in anesthesia to help provide medical care to patients in need. Meet Rosa, a resilient 4-year-old chihuahua who was rescued from the streets of Puerto Rico. 🌟

When Rosa was found, she had severe hind limb deformities. She was referred to our surgical department, where Dr. Schillinger took on her case. Rosa had bilateral grade 4 patellar luxations along with her hind limb deformities.

Rosa’s treatment plan involved undergoing multiple surgeries in a carefully staged process. Thanks to these surgeries, extensive rehab, and the unwavering love and dedication from her owner, Rosa has made an incredible recovery. Today, she has no limitations and loves to run everywhere she can! 🐾❤️

A huge thank you to Rosa’s owner for sharing this heartwarming video. We are overjoyed to see Rosa thriving and doing so well. 🥰

Discover the little-known world of three-legged cat rehab therapy—it's not just available, it's transformative for Tripawd cats. Many aspects of rehab tailored for dogs are equally beneficial for cats, including core strengthening, balance, proprioception, and muscle building. Through rehab, Tripawd cats experience an improved quality of life and maintain their mobility with ease. Moreover, it aids in weight management, ensuring they stay at a healthy size without joint strain.

Despite their unique challenges, most Tripawd cats pursue their passions, like climbing, with modifications discussed with their rehab therapist.

Hydrotherapy—the ultimate workout for our tripawd friends! 🌊 It offers countless benefits that include:

🌟 Buoyancy that takes pressure off their joints, making movement easier and more comfortable.
🌟 Warm water? Talk about a soothing spa day! It helps ease any aches and pains, leaving our dog friends feeling relaxed and refreshed.
🌟 And let's not forget about their muscles! Swimming and walking in water are excellent exercises for building strength and stability.

Plus, have you heard about our underwater treadmill? They're like the gym equipment of the canine world, perfect for gait training and building muscle tone.

Our pups absolutely love it! It's a win-win for everyone involved.
