It’s Training Tip Tuesday!
We have so many people come to us because their dog is reactive, be it to people, other dogs, vehicles, small animals or anything else that may be a trigger to them. We work with each owner and their dog as individuals, but things we always focus on are setting reasonable long-term goals and management strategies. So our training tip to you, today, is just that. Set reasonable goals and be ready with management strategies when in a situation where their trigger is unavoidable or seems to come out of nowhere.
We want your dog to succeed and a big part of that is setting reasonable goals. If you have a dog that tends to be an introvert, don’t expect your dog to want to say hi to strangers or do well in over stimulating settings with a lot of commotion and tons of people and other dogs. If your dog is the opposite and gets overexcited around others, it may not be the best choice to take them to extremely busy places where they can become over stimulated and rehearse and repeat the unwanted behaviors. We understand that there are times your dog may have to be around other dogs, whether on a walk in your neighborhood or a visit to the vet, and that is where managements comes into play. The decisions you make and the time you commit to reinforcing calm behaviors in public can be a deciding factor on your dog’s comfort level when in higher stress settings. Remember, you are your dog’s advocate! ❤️

We love seeing our clients succeed and reaching their goals! This is Duke on his last private session with Elaine, on a shopping trip to the Shops at Stonefield. As a puppy, he was found abandoned on the side of the road. He came to his owners, not knowing a lot. He was pulling on his leash to say ‘hi’ to people and dogs, jumping on people, chewing on things he wasn’t supposed to, wanting to chase and play with the family’s beloved cat and without door manners. Living with kids and a cat, he needed to show some self-control, without jumping on everyone and everything and not to bolt out the door to chase cars. He’s always been a sweet and smart dog, but now he has manners and displays good behavior so they can enjoy him at home and be confident to take them with them on outings. We hope to see them at our Group Classes and Pack walks soon!

Even taking some time to relax in Orvis and L.L. Bean. He got eyed by a schnauzer in Orvis, but his owners advocated for him and kept him safe so he could maintain his state of calm relaxation and good behavior! Today’s training tip is to work on that place command!
The place command is a fantastic way to help your dog practice good, calm behavior in different moments. It gives them a clear job to focus on with set boundaries. It prevents them from having the opportunity to practice bad/unwanted behaviors (like jumping on guests, dashing out an open door and chewing on inappropriate things), while developing a pattern of calmer behavior.

Poodles, Doodles and Poodle Mixes are High Maintenance Dogs because of their grooming needs. Unfortunately sometimes clients get a new doodle puppy and have been told that they are easy, low or no shedding dogs that don't require much brushing or have even been told not to get them groomed before they are 6-9 months old. This is NOT true. We recommend to our puppy clients that they schedule their first grooming salon visit by 12 weeks old. These types of dogs needs regular professional grooming every 4-6 weeks and maintenance brushing and combing at home. In addition to the scheduling commitment, comes the grooming budget you need to allocate. Teaching your puppy to stay is easy if you start with taking 1 step away and then build up distance 1 step at a time. Remember to return to your puppy to praise and reward them for staying put.
