We took a year-long break from our social media page, & focused more on our occasional newsletters. We’re still trying to navigate ways of interacting with our community that feel good, but in the meantime wanted to catch you up on what we’ve been working on here at Mush Luv. Also if you want to sign up for our newsletters, email us at [email protected]
In addition to taking it slow and trying to build the kind of work we want to do from the ground up, we’ve continued collecting wild cultures of local genotype edible and medicinal mushrooms, including Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Reishi, three of our most generous friends. Working with local cultures is important for a number of reasons:
RESPECT- First is the fact that we are working with mushrooms we’ve had a chance to meet, interact with, and respectfully harvest for cloning or spore culture. Not all fungi want to work with us, and we don’t want to work with every fungus. By meeting the mushroom where it lives, we can ensure that it is an appropriate working partner before spending resources growing it.
STEWARDSHIP - Another reason is that the genetic diversity and long-term health of local fungal populations may depend on cultivators going the extra mile and working with an array of different strains. Most farms are currently mono-cropping the same few “commercial” strains that are distributed from large spawn suppliers. If all the spores escaping from all the mushroom farms are nearly identical, imagine the inbreeding and diminishment of genetic diversity in the local populations of these important and unique fungi!
RELATIONSHIP - Just as importantly, we’re grateful for the unique experience of growing each new mushroom strain we collect, and they each teach us more and more about how to create a truly bioregional approach to medicinal mushrooms. We feel that growing and consuming foods from the region where you live is one of the most important ways to remain healthy and connected to the world around you.
