The trees are starting to change color in Vermont and the nights are getting colder.
Horses grazing on frosty pastures with the bright red, orange and yellow trees in the background make for a beautiful picture. However, this picture can lead to laminitis for some horses.
When nighttime temperatures drop below 40F, it is best to pull your metabolic horse off pasture and into a dry lot. Cold nights and sunny days cause sugars to accumulate in the grass. Unfortunately, once the frost has melted and the sun comes out, the sugar is still in the grass.
** Avoid turning your metabolic horse out on pasture after cold nights and sunny days until nighttime temperatures are above 40 degrees and the day is overcast.**
