Answer to trivia:
Sarcoid
Equine sarcoids are the most commonly diagnosed skin tumor. Though these masses are benign, they still require prompt and thorough treatment as they can be rapid growing, locally invasive, and challenging to treat. There are several types of Sarcoids so report any skin mass to us and we are happy to properly diagnose and navigate treatment.
Tuesday Trivia:
These benign equine masses come in many varieties. Five distinct appearances to be exact. This one grew rapidly and there are multiple other similar masses on this horse.
What type of mass is this?
It's Celebration of the Horse Day. We know a few doctors and an excellent technician who celebrate the horse daily! We are so passionate about your equine counterparts and love them with you. ๐ด
Dr. Barker & Dr. Erwin recently performed a skin graft on a large wound to hasten healing. This type of graft is called a punch biopsy graft where small circular pieces of skin are harvested and transplanted in to the wound bed. This wound received 119 graft pieces and is on the road to a much faster recovery!
Wishing everyone a happy, and safe, Independence Day! ๐บ๐ธ

On the recent subject of pain in horses. If you have not watched this video and you are an equestrian at any level please take a moments to watch. Just because your horse isnโt traditionally โlameโ doesnโt mean they donโt hurt. We're happy to do pain ethogram assessments and help problem solve pain in your horse.

Does the position of your girth matter? Holy smokes, yes! Letโs look at a few examples of why. If the D rings, buckles, or the leather seam end too low on the thorax you run the risk of either rubbing across a nerve bundle or pressing on the delicate cartilage of the rib cage potentially causing costochondritis. Avoiding these scenarioโs is really simple โ ensure that your girth is long to avoid these regions and cover any exposed buckles with fleece.
It gives us great joy to announce the addition of Dr. Katie Rohrig to our practice! ๐
Dr. Rohrig will start accepting small animal appointments July 10th. ๐ฉโโ๏ธ
Dr. Rohrig grew up locally on a beef cattle and to***co farm in Pittsylvania County and was actively involved in showing horses and livestock through 4-H most of her life. She began working at a local veterinary clinic in high school where she eventually began practicing veterinary medicine upon graduation from veterinary school. Dr. Rohrig received a B.S. in Animal and Poultry Sciences from Virginia Tech in 2005 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. Dr. Rohrig believes the human-animal bond is very important and enjoys being able to help families keep their pets as healthy as possible. She has a special interest in dentistry and preventive medicine. She is also Fear Free Certified in hopes to make visits more comfortable for our patients. In her spare time, Katie enjoys riding horses, doing agility with her dog, and participating in other outdoor activities with her husband Will.
While relaxed I want you to tuck your chin to your chest and pay attention to what happens to you lower jaw โ it should slide forward. Now clench your teeth and do the same thing โ less comfortable?
Consider the horse with this large hook on their premolar? No way they're able to slide their jaw forward appropriately.
Good luck Charlie Bays at JR High National Finals Rodeo! ๐ค Go show Des Moines what a VA cowgirl is made of. Everyone at home is rooting for you!
Itโs always a good day for baby coatimundis. ๐
59 equestrians commented on our last post and said they had back pain. Now consider your own back pain and let me pose a few questions. Would you feel like wearing a weighted vest and exercising? Is your back pain linear, meaning it has gotten better and never returned? Did one single treatment fix it or does it require multiple ongoing therapies?
I could keep going. Now consider your equine partner that has back pain (arguably many of them have it that arenโt telling you). Isnโt it fair that they may require ongoing multimodal therapy to continue to perform at their best?
It is VERY important that you interact with this post. If you are an equestrian and you have had back pain drop a ๐โโ๏ธ emoji in the comments.
Iโll go first (Dr. Barker & Katie). ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
Schools out but the learning never ends on a farm. ๐ด

Shewwww the mares keep us busy this time of year. Luckily, saying lots of, "she's pregnant." If weโre slack on the social media posts, never fear, we'll have lots to catch you up on when we slow down enough to sit and post. For now, Happy Spring! ๐ท
Answer to Tuesday trivia:
Banamine should only be administered orally or IV. When given in the muscle it can cause Clostridial Myositis a potentially fatal condition that causes rapid tissue necrosis. ๐ When in doubt always check on dosages and routes of administrations for medication.
Tuesday Trivia:
Do you know what medication can cause this potentially fatal reaction if administered incorrectly?
We have the best job. ๐ We get to love on and help all of these sweet faces.
Boarding season is upon us! Our new facility will have so much space for boarders. ๐ In the meantime, be sure to book your summer vacation spots in advance!

Answer to Tuesday Trivia. ๐
Chorioptes Equi also known as the feather mite of horses. These mites cause itching, thickening of the skin, and a crusty discharge on the lower limbs of feathered horses.
Commonly affected breeds are Gypsy Vanners, Fresians, and Clydesdales. Something to consider before buying one of these breeds is how much maintenance all of that beautiful hair is.
Trivia Tuesday:
What species do you think this mite came from?

Back pain is complex in horses and many cases originate from numerous factors. This case is enjoying some very gentle spinal manipulation from Dr. Barker. He is being treated in a multimodal fashion and is responding incredibly!
You want to watch this precious video with the sound up! ๐ฃ If you have an "easy keeper" you may actually be dealing with something greater. Equine metabolic syndrome is a disease of horses that involves obesity, insulin dysregulation, and subsequent laminitis. Listen to Parker telling us an important part of controlling the disease!
How cute is this little pup having some lunchtime fun? We highly recommend bringing your puppy or adult dog in for some fun visits. Whether it is just coming and sitting in the waiting room while being fed treats and getting love or as much as boarding for the day for some playtime with the staff. These visits let your pet know that not every visit has to be associated with vaccines and help them enjoy seeing us!
