💚 Day 17 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms 💚

Today, we celebrate the incredible foundations and organizations whose belief in Crabtree Farms fuels our mission to build a healthier, stronger and more connected Chattanooga. Thanks to your generosity, we’re able to grow and share fresh produce, teach sustainable urban farming, and connect more people with the joy of healthy, locally grown food.

A heartfelt thank you to the United Way of Greater Chattanooga, the Weldon F. Osborne Foundation, the Bobby Stone Foundation, the Footprint Foundation, Whole Foods Foundation, the Trust for Public Land, the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, the USDA, the NRCS and others. You’re not just funders—you’re partners in expanding access to fresh food, nurturing our community programming, and strengthening our connection to the land we love. Thank you! 🌱💚

🌶 Day 16 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms 🫔

Estamos demasiado agradecidas por el programa de educación, Comida es Vida!

Comida es Vida (Food is Life) is the name of the monthly gathering we hold on the first Thursday of each month in the Evelyn Center. The series began in the spring of 2022 as a class, taught in Spanish, about using whole grains and legumes as the basis for healthy and economical meals. As the months passed and participants wanted to continue meeting, we adopted a more collaborative format. Now we all share recipes and techniques, and we learn from one another. The participants have shared useful knowledge about the medicinal value of plants we had previously considered weeds! Muchas gracias!!

At the end of each session, the group collectively decides what to prepare for the following month, and participants coordinate the ingredients a week in advance, often incorporating fresh produce from the farm. Children play while the meal is prepared, then everyone eats together. It’s lovely y muy especial!

Today we are giving thanks to our amazing Crabtree Community Gardeners! This program has been so successful because of those who participate..They have accepted the call to learn, grow and connect. They show up, plant, water, harvest, and truly make the community garden a special place. This program helps the community thrive through the power of being connected to the source of our food. Thank you for choosing the Crabtree Community Garden Program and being so inspirational to us all.

This year, we built 8 new garden beds and will continue adding 8 beds a year for the next two years. The Crabtree Community Garden program provides a 4x8 foot garden bed filled with soil, access to tools, irrigation, seeds, two annual seasonal plant starts, and the opportunity to connect with others. Day 14 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms

On this day of gratitude we extend our appreciation to the young visitors that come to the farm and take part in our youth education programs. Crabtree Farms gets to transform into an outdoor classroom and provide experiences and lessons on conservation, pollination, composting and much more. For those that take part in our farm tours, field trips, gardening classes and even off site visits we are so thankful for your willingness to dig in the dirt, taste veggies and herbs, sort seeds, ask poignant questions and participate in this wonderful community.

With every visit we learn more from these young minds about the importance of making the connection from farm to table and their role in it all.

Our youth education programs continue to expand and we can't wait to see what the next year holds for our youth community here at Crabtree Farms.

Thank you & patrons! We love being part of such a thriving local food market. Your commitment to supporting local food has allowed so many farmers to continue to provide the Chattanooga area with their products. Building relationships with regulars, teaching folks about produce they’ve never seen and inspiring people to look into their local agriculture hubs is such a joy.

Thank you for supporting us!

🌱 Day 10 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms 🌱

Today, we’re filled with gratitude for our Monthly Sustainers! These dedicated supporters fuel our mission year-round, helping us grow fresh produce, provide hands-on education, and expand food access across Chattanooga.

Monthly giving—whether $5 or $50—gives Crabtree Farms a steady foundation to plan, plant, and provide all year long. It helps us weather challenges and focus on the work that matters: nurturing a resilient local food system, empowering emerging farmers, and deepening our connections with the community. Sustainers, you are the heartbeat of Crabtree Farms. Your consistent support means we can keep planting seeds of change for a more equitable, resilient future.

Thank you for being by our side every month—your dedication helps our roots grow deeper and our impact reach farther! 🌻🌍

🪴 Day 9 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms 🪴
We love the greenhouse team and all that they bring to life! We give huge thanks for their contribution to our annual budget through plant sales, and for helping to fill Chattanooga with healthy plants season after season! Pictured are permanent staff members, Greenhouse Manager Annemarie Gero and Assistant Sarah Wiatrek, plus Maya Scribner (in the middle) who has been onboard during the busiest seasons.

The greenhouse team, which also includes volunteers and workshares, starts seedlings for farmwide production crops, the community gardeners, for our plant sales, and to be donated to other community gardens, schools and organizations across Chattanooga. Some plants are cared for through several seasons! Everything is done to help ensure the plants are healthy and productive, no matter where they are planted.

In addition to three greenhouses, the greenhouse team cultivates and cares for the mother garden, whose beauty we are immensely grateful for. The mother garden is home to perennial 'mother plants' which the team can dig up as needed to split and multiply, or take cuttings or save seed to propagate for the plant sales. The abundant pollinators nourished by the mother garden are surely humming their thanks in languages older than ours.
Thank you Greenhouse Team for all you do!

Today, we are giving thanks to our wonderful Emerging Farmers! We appreciate the outpour of interest regarding the Mary Navarre Moore Emerging Farmer Program. Out of all the applicants four were selected: Bri, Carlos, JK, and Neftali. They each work a 45x95 plot here at Crabtree Farms of Chattanooga, and have grown a variety of produce this year.

They are all educators in one way or another. Bri, Carlos, and Neftali teach their own children about the importance of agriculture. JK is the founder of Kind Hearts Community. His non-profit is dedicated to spreading kindness through play, education, and community. JK uses his plot to educate and bring community members together. They all stress the importance of knowing where produce comes from, recognizing the positive impact that nature makes on mental health, and understanding the benefits of local produce.

This is our first year implementing this program, therefore we are learning through experience. Our Emerging Farmers have been understanding, patient, and have helped us improve through their feedback. They helped us get the program started, and further inspire us to advocate for agricultural accessibility. They are all very passionate about agriculture, and we couldn’t be any happier with our emerging farmers. Bri, Carlos, JK, and Nefatli, thank you for all that you do!

🍁Day 7 of 30 Days of Gratitude at Crabtree Farms🍁

Today we express gratitude for our partnership with Nature Kin Farm and Forest School. We celebrate our second year with such wonderful educators and students as we get to be their homebase/class site during the week!

NKFFS is a homeschool enrichment program focusing on community, compassion, and creative learning. They offer a variety of half and full day programs during the week for ages 5-13.

It is a gift to have their joyful energy on our farm and it is always inspiring to watch as the students learn more deeply about food and their own connection to the land.

To learn more about NKFFS check out their website through the link in our bio.

Our Story

We believe in a world where people are connected to one another, the land, and their own healthy body. Enlivening our community since 1998 through eating, education, and experience, Crabtree Farms is a nonprofit, community-focused sustainable farm and agriculture resource.

We pride ourselves on making our space available to all, therefore our gates are open year round, Monday-Saturday between 9am-3pm. During those times, we invite you and your loved ones to come visit and connect with one another through connecting with nature. Admission is free and we are always looking for new friends. You can roam the land and use the space as a park, see farming in action, or pack a simple picnic and enjoy the outdoors. After all, there’s always a place for you on the farm. You can participate by becoming a member and therefore supporting our mission and work; registering for a workshop or class; visiting and shopping during one of our 4 annual fundraising events; scheduling a tour or field trip; or lending a hand - we can always use more - in our fields, greenhouses, or kids programs. If you love our space and are looking to hold an event, meeting, reception, retreat, or party, consider renting the Evelyn Center. Your support makes our work possible.
