🌱 Crabtree Farms MLK Day of Service: Calling All Winter Warriors! Be Part of Something Bigger This MLK Day!

This year, we’re creating something extraordinary: a new community food space that will bring people together and expand access to healthy, locally grown food. But we can’t do it without you!

🌱 What You’ll Be Doing:
- Establishing a new high tunnel site to extend our growing capacity
- Removing old fencing, trees, and blackberry plants to clear the way for progress
- Moving, grooving, and getting your hands dirty in this active, outdoor project

This isn’t just a chance to give back—it’s an opportunity to connect with your city, work alongside passionate changemakers, and make a tangible impact on the place you call home. Plus, you’ll have a chance to meet new people and gain firsthand experience in sustainable agriculture and urban farming.

🌦 Rain or Shine: We’re hardy like our crops—this project will proceed regardless of weather!

👕 What to Bring: Dress warmly, wear sturdy shoes, bring a water bottle, and get ready to work outside. We have gloves here, but you are encouraged to bring your own if you have them!

📅 When: Monday, January 20, 2025
📍 Where: Crabtree Farms, Clifton Hills

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone! Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or looking to try something new, this is your chance to make a real difference in your community.

👉 Sign up today by emailing [email protected]! Let’s honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by coming together to cultivate a brighter future.

🌱 Greenhouse Opportunities Are Here! 🌱 Looking to grow your gardening skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and make a meaningful impact? Crabtree Farms' Greenhouse Team has TWO exciting ways to get involved this winter:

1️⃣ Volunteer Program: Perfect for flexible schedules, volunteers can join us for tasks like planting, pruning, and prepping the farm for the season ahead.

2️⃣ Workshare Program: Starting Tuesday, January 14, this 7-week session offers a deeper commitment with weekly 3-hour shifts (Monday–Thursday) and a biweekly produce box as a thank-you for your dedication. Workshares focus on seed starting, propagation, tropical plant care, and preparing for the Spring Plant Sale!

PLUS, we’re introducing a special Friday Workshare Opportunity: Become the Perennial Garden Steward and play a key role in shaping and maintaining the inspiring mother garden. Email Sarah at [email protected] for more information!

This January 26, join us in bidding “Goodbye” to Winter and welcoming the first whispers of Spring at our Imbolc gathering from 6–8 PM at Crabtree Farms. Together, we’ll celebrate with a multi-course seasonal feast, craft traditional St. Brigid’s Crosses, and partake in rituals honoring the goddess Brigid and the return of the light.

Imbolc, traditionally celebrated from sundown on February 1 to February 2, marks the midpoint between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox—a time to honor the earth’s renewal and embrace the promise of brighter days ahead. This celebration follows no specific creed or religion; it’s simply a moment to connect with nature, community, and the beauty of our shared planet.

Come dressed in soft whites, spring greens, or shimmering golds to honor the season, and join us for an evening of love, light, and connection. This event welcomes adults and mature teens who wish to nurture their hearts, homes, and spirits.

Meet Diane: Learning Something New Everyday at Crabtree Farms✨🌱🥬

With over five years of weekly volunteering at Crabtree Farms, Diane remains enthusiastic about the discoveries each day brings. From refreshing soil and potting plants to starting flower and vegetable seedlings or propagating plants from cuttings, she finds each task a learning opportunity. Diane is particularly amazed by the sheer number of plant varieties she encounters.

Even after years of volunteering, Diane proudly shares that she continues to learn something new every time she visits the farm, gaining insights she applies to her own garden and small greenhouse. Looking to the future she says, “Here’s to the next 5 years at the farm…come join us!”

❄️🎁Happy Holidays from the board and staff of Crabtree Farms! We hope that you will all be able to enjoy this season of togetherness and rest. With immense gratitude for the dormant nature of winter, we hope to emerge in the spring feeling restored and renewed in our purpose.

In the new year, there will be some updates in our communications and market presence that we hope will
be more sustainable for the people and the land of Crabtree Farms. We will be embracing the slowness of
the season so that when we return, we are showing up with greater intention and at full capacity.

We are so grateful for all of you who support the mission of Crabtree Farms and all the ways you help us cultivate community. We wish you all peace, love and joy!🕊💕✨

While we are an urban farm that produces food, the work of Crabtree Farms extends far beyond the fields.

Community engagement and education remain at the heart of everything we do.

Our programs are designed to meet people where they are, encouraging deeper connections to the land and each other.

With the support of our community, we are creating an open, exploratory space where learning is hands-on and low-pressure—a place where plants want to grow, and so will you.

Meet Bri: Inspired to Grow at Crabtree Farms ✨🌱🥬

Bri’s first connection with Crabtree Farms came through the community garden program. There, she discovered a welcoming place to grow food, learn new skills, and meet others who cared about the land. This experience and her personal connections to agriculture inspired her to join Crabtree Farms’ Emerging Farmer Mentorship program, where she is now developing her own farm plot and working toward her dreams.

Celebrating the Power of Community Collaboration! Last week, we were thrilled to welcome volunteers from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and faculty from Baylor School to join us in an incredible harvest effort. Together, we gathered an impressive 150 pounds of fresh carrots and leafy greens, which were generously donated to the pantry at Metropolitan Ministries for food distribution.

It was a joy to work alongside fellow food access champions, frolicking in the fields and cultivating connection. We're deeply grateful for the opportunity to share this bounty with our neighbors, ensuring fresh, healthy produce reaches those who need it most. Here's to the spirit of teamwork and the power of community! 🌱💚

Our community members remind us daily why this work is so important...

Families that come to tend their garden beds and leave with new friends.

Folks that come to learn and find that they too have knowledge to share.

Groups that come to reconnect with their roots and develop new relationships with the land.

People with passion who want to be in right relation with the earth.

A place that inspires resilience and growth.

Food that nourishes.

Our Story

We believe in a world where people are connected to one another, the land, and their own healthy body. Enlivening our community since 1998 through eating, education, and experience, Crabtree Farms is a nonprofit, community-focused sustainable farm and agriculture resource.

We pride ourselves on making our space available to all, therefore our gates are open year round, Monday-Saturday between 9am-3pm. During those times, we invite you and your loved ones to come visit and connect with one another through connecting with nature. Admission is free and we are always looking for new friends. You can roam the land and use the space as a park, see farming in action, or pack a simple picnic and enjoy the outdoors. After all, there’s always a place for you on the farm. You can participate by becoming a member and therefore supporting our mission and work; registering for a workshop or class; visiting and shopping during one of our 4 annual fundraising events; scheduling a tour or field trip; or lending a hand - we can always use more - in our fields, greenhouses, or kids programs. If you love our space and are looking to hold an event, meeting, reception, retreat, or party, consider renting the Evelyn Center. Your support makes our work possible.
