So... why haven't you come to adopt Octopus yet? 🐙

We first introduced this fun-loving guy back in July, and since then, Octopus has been patiently waiting for his moment in the spotlight. That’s right—173 days at the shelter, and still no meet-and-greet! But he's taking it all in stride, working hard on being the best boy he can be while making the most of his time here. Growing up in a shelter isn’t easy, but Octopus is handling it like a champ. Now, as MAC's "Pet of the Week," he's more hopeful than ever that his time to shine is just around the corner!

Octopus arrived at MAC in January as a stray with his three siblings, who all found homes in no time. Unfortunately, Octopus is still waiting for his forever family to scoop him up. Now just over a year old, he’s a shelter "teen" with tons of energy and a playful spirit! He’s ready to grow up alongside an active family who can keep up with his adventurous nature. 🦴

This lively pup needs room to run, whether it’s a big yard or lots of hikes and long walks with his new human buddies. Once you tire him out, you’ll discover a sweet, loyal cuddle bug who just wants to be close to you. He hasn't had much time to mingle with other dogs, but with the right furry sibling, he could fit right in! Since he's a bit rambunctious, a home with patient and steady folks would be perfect.

Not sure if he’s the one? Octopus is eligible for a Slumber Pawty! You can bring him home for a few nights to see how wonderful he is in action. Even if it doesn’t work out, you’ll give this spirited pup a break from shelter life, and he’ll love the change of scenery! 💜

When you adopt the "Pet of the Week" at MAC, not only will their adoption fee be waived, but they will get a big basket of goodies to enjoy with their new family! So what are you waiting for? Stop by MAC to meet Octopus today! To learn more about Octopus, visit our website by clicking the link in the comment section down below. ⬇️

Jonah, this handsome 3-year-old mixed breed, has been available for adoption for over 170 days and counting. Will today be the day he finds his humans once and for all? ❤

If you're looking to add four paws and a wagging tail into your life, we can't recommend Jonah enough! With his friendly demeanor and heart full of love, Jonah gets along famously with everyone he meets. He has a low to medium energy level, enjoys rolling in the grass, and walks beautifully on a leash. Jonah appears house-trained and would thrive with a lower-energy canine companion, given slow and careful introductions.

Despite being heartworm-positive, his spirit remains uncrushed, and he's always ready to give big, affectionate hugs. Jonah is also great with children aged 4 and up and truly believes he's a lap dog at heart. If you're looking for a loving, outdoor-loving companion who's ready to shower you with affection, Jonah is your perfect match! ❤

We're open for adoptions today from 10 AM - 4 PM and would love to introduce you to this handsome pup! To learn more about Jonah and all of his wonderful friends here at the Center, head on over to our website by clicking the link in our bio! 🔗

We are absolutely busting at the seams with animals right now, specifically large dogs. If you have it in your heart to adopt a new pet, please consider adopting a dog from MAC. 🐾

With close to 600 animals in our care, we desperately need our communities support when it comes to adoption. Every single kennel in our facility is full, some have more than one animal, every office and spare room or corner has an animal in it. And for every kennel that is emptied, it is immediately filled again.

We need YOUR support.

We are open from 12 PM until 6 PM today and 10 AM to 4 PM this weekend. Please stop by and see us. There are so many incredible animals waiting to go home with you.

If you can't adopt, consider fostering. If you can't foster, consider signing up to volunteer. If you can't volunteer, consider making a donation or bringing supplies by to help care for the animals. We can't do it without your support. ❤

How can MAC help if you've lost your pet? We’re here to share some resources that every pet parent should know about! 🐾

First, be sure to check out our Lost and Found Pets page on the MAC website. This page shows all pets currently on stray hold at MAC, and it updates in real-time. You’ll also find helpful links to online resources like Petco Love Lost and PawBoost, where you can list your lost pet.

We also have a dedicated page, McKamey Lost and Found, where we post strays in our care on a daily basis. We do our best to share lost pets on our main page as well, but following this dedicated page ensures you won't miss any new listings.

If you haven’t explored these resources yet, now is a great time to do so. Statistics show that 1 in 3 pets will go missing at some point in their life, so it’s always good to be prepared. Microchipping is also one of the best ways to keep your pet safe!

This September, MAC is offering half-price microchips at our Wednesday vaccine and microchip clinics, so you can get your pet chipped for just $10. Keep in mind, these clinics are first-come, first-served, so wait times may vary.

Stay prepared, stay informed, and together we’ll keep pets in our community safe! To learn more about Lost and Found pet resources at MAC, visit our website by clicking the link in the comment section down below. ⬇️🔗

Meet Moe, the sweetest, most playful pup you could ever hope to meet! 🐶

This lovable guy is just shy of his 3rd birthday, and he’s hoping that being MAC’s ‘Pet of the Week’ will be the magic that finally helps him get adopted. Moe’s got energy for days—he loves to run, chase toys, and explore the great outdoors. But don’t let that fool you; Moe’s biggest talent is being an absolute lapdog. At the end of a fun-filled day, all he wants is to curl up on your lap, soak up some belly rubs, and show off his skills as the ultimate cuddle companion.

Moe is as loyal as they come. Once he finds his people, he’s going to stick by their side through thick and thin. He’s also a leash-walking pro, so he’ll be ready to join you for evening strolls, weekend hikes, or just about any adventure you have in mind. And while he’s all about his humans, Moe might enjoy the company of a calm doggy sibling—but he’ll definitely want to meet them first to make sure they’re a good fit. 🐾

Adopting Moe as the ‘Pet of the Week’ means you’re not just bringing home a fun, loving, and incredibly affectionate dog, but you’ll also get a basket full of goodies to help him settle into his new life. So, what are you waiting for? Come on down to MAC and give Moe the chance to show you just how perfect he really is—one cuddle at a time! ❤

Looking for a best friend and workout buddy rolled into one? Well, guess what—you've hit the jackpot with Deacon and Lundy! 🐶

These adorable pups have a little extra love around the middle, but they're already making wonderful progress in shedding those pounds. Now, they just need a family to keep the momentum going! If you're searching for a walking partner who’ll keep you on track (and maybe slow you down just a tad), these chunky cuties are ready to join your fitness journey! 💪

Deacon and Lundy are all about those fun walks and mini-adventures. Deacon is the ultimate laid-back guy—at 8 years old, he's all about enjoying the simple pleasures and would fit right in with any family. On the other hand, Lundy is a sweet and friendly girl who prefers to have her humans all to herself—no other dogs or cats, please! But trust us, with Lundy around, you won't need any other pets. ❤

08/28/2024

Today is National Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, and it’s a special time to think back on the pets who brought so much love and joy into our lives. They may be gone, but their memories are still very much alive, warming our hearts with every wag, purr, and cuddle we remember. 🌈

At MAC, we know just how deep that bond goes. That’s why we’re inviting you to celebrate your furry friend’s life with a memorial donation in their name. Not only does this keep their memory close, but it also helps us care for other animals who are waiting to find their own special someone.

Every donation makes a difference, providing food, shelter, and medical care to animals in need. Your support helps us keep the love going, just like your pet did for you. ❤

Whether it’s a custom-engraved stone like the ones pictured below, a spot on our ever-growing pet mural, or a special donation in their memory, there are so many heartfelt ways to keep your pet’s memory alive while supporting our life-saving work. Meet Miss Viola! 🩷

This sweet girl is MAC’s ‘Pet of the Week’ this week and we’re crossing our fingers that this will be the week she finds her new family. At just over 2 years old, Viola still plays like a puppy. She loves to run, zoom around, and chase after her beloved squeaky toys—bonus points if they make noise!

Viola is not just playful; she’s also a big ole' smarty pants. She’ll sit perfectly for a treat, and her progress has been incredible since she first arrived at MAC. Although she’s been wary of humans in the past and can get a bit nervous in new situations, her confidence has been growing every day. She might be cautious around people, but she absolutely adores other dogs. In fact, having a high-energy canine companion is a must for Viola to help her continue building confidence and stay busy.

When you adopt MAC’s ‘Pet of the Week,’ not only is the adoption fee waived, but you’ll also take home a basket full of goodies and treats for your new furry friend. If your family is looking to add some fun and four paws to your home, Viola might be your perfect match! 🐶

Rabbit Update 🐰

It's been just one week since MAC and The Humane Society of the United States removed more than 100 rabbits from a local Chattanooga home. Overall, the rabbits are doing well and adjusting to their temporary shelter as they continue to be monitored by our dedicated teams.

Many of you have reached out and asked about adoption. Unfortunately, we do not have a set timeline for when these rabbits will be available for adoption. As soon as we do know, we promise we will post an update here on Facebook and on our website. It will likely be a couple weeks per recommendations from veterinarians to give the rabbits time to decompress. The HSUS will be handling placement of the rabbits, so if you are a rescue group who is interested in helping, please reach out to the HSUS.

For now, the rabbits are being safely housed and treated for medical conditions. Nearly every single rabbit that was pulled from the home was suffering from a severe flea infestation, which in turn has caused a ripple effect of health issues. Others are healing from fight/bite wounds and some are recovering from other health conditions. But we are seeing signs of improvement and are looking forward to being part of their recovery. It was very clear to all of our team members that the rabbits were definitely loved and cared for by their caretaker despite the circumstances.

We are very thankful to our community who have donated supplies and monetarily, those who have come by with treats for our staff and those who have just been simply kind to our team. We are also incredibly appreciative to the HSUS for helping us handle and manage this case. A situation like this requires a ton of resources, staffing and time behind the scenes.

While the rabbits are in their waiting period for next steps, we could use some help in keeping them entertained! If you have cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towels, please consider the rabbits! We are stuffing them with goodies to make enrichment treats for them. Tubes can be dropped off at our main shelter location, 4500 North Access Rd. Chattanooga, TN 37415. ❤

We also are incredibly lucky to have our dedicated staff! The team that is pictured here are just some of the incredible MAC Staff who have been helping this week with this situation. Every single department in our building from administration to animal protection, have stepped up to help on and off scene ensuring not only these rabbits, but also the 500+ animals in our care, are being looked after and loved. We are incredibly lucky to have the team we do! 🐾

BREAKING NEWS – BUNNY RESCUE UNDERWAY 🐰

Remember that anyone can find themselves in need of help with their pets.

For the person who resided in this home, they simply became overwhelmed at a time when they needed support the most. Unfortunately, the situation has resulted in over one hundred rabbits residing in one place with extremely unsanitary conditions throughout the home. Thankfully the owner sought help before the circumstances got any worse and has been completely compliant with all help and removal offered. They were simply an overwhelmed caregiver that needed help but didn’t know where to turn.

In partnership with the The Humane Society of the United States, we are actively responding to this devastating situation. At this time, we have found dozens upon dozens of rabbits, but know there are more hiding inside furniture and burrows under the house. Some are pregnant, have just given birth, are ill, or have special needs. Your support right now is absolutely critical.

How can you help?

Donate Funding. These situations are very costly and require lots of resources and staffing. Even a donation of $10 makes a big difference in the lives of these animals. Donations can be made online through Facebook or directly through our website.

Open Up Your Home. While MAC will not be keeping ALL of these rabbits (thank you to the rescue partners!!) we will be keeping a handful of them and looking to place them into loving homes. If you are interested in adopting one of these bunnies, please continue to monitor our website and social media pages. We cannot guarantee which ones and when they will be available for adoption, but will keep updates coming as we are able to.

Volunteer Your Time. HSUS has us covered with volunteers right now, but these cases can, and will, happen in the future – it’s just a matter of time. MAC is always in need of volunteers and fosters. Learn more by visiting our website.

Check on Your Neighbors. All too often we find that neighbors are forgotten about in the busy hustle and bustle of day to day life. For this caregiver, they simply got overwhelmed and didn’t know what to do until it was too late. If you or someone you know is struggling to care for your pet, please reach out. We are here and happy to help as we can, or provide resources to help you care for them.

We thank our community for the anticipated outpouring of support these special rabbits will be receiving. Lots of our staff are away from their typical duties this week, assisting with this special case. Please be patient with our team if you call or visit our Center this week. We will return your calls and messages as soon as we are able to and appreciate your support.

Saving Animals, Helping People

Our vision is to eliminate animal overpopulation, cruelty, and neglect. To create a culture of compassionate care, community engagement and advocacy for animals by providing programs and education that support people and companion animals.

At the McKamey Animal Center we aspire to the five freedom principles that are generally recognized in the animal welfare community. The principles are: 1. Freedom from hunger or thirst – by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor 2. Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment 3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease – by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment 4. Freedom to express normal behavior – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s kind 5. Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
