Meet Goal, our Pet of the Week! 🐶🐕

What’s your goal for 2025? Mr. Goal has set his
sights on one very special New Year’s resolution: finding a loving family who’s ready to share their lives with a loyal, 60-pound lap dog!🤍

Goal is a wiggly, affectionate boy who adores spending time outdoors and soaking up the fresh air. He’s fantastic with people and has shown curiosity about both dogs and cats, making him a great potential addition to a multi-pet household. While he’s currently healing from a minor procedure, it hasn’t slowed him down one bit—his playful personality and loving nature shine brighter than ever.

During his six months at MAC, Goal has truly captured our hearts. He’s become a social butterfly, eager to greet every person who walks through our doors with his big, happy smile and wagging tail. He’s a natural at making friends and spreading joy. We believe Goal would be a wonderful companion for first-time dog owners, as long as they’re ready to keep him active, entertained, and loved.

To make Goal’s dream of a new family even sweeter, his adoption fee is completely waived this week! Plus, he’ll head home with some special goodies to help him settle in comfortably.
Goal is more than ready to start his next chapter—are you ready to help him? Stop by MAC to meet him today and see if he’s the missing piece to your family!⭐️

We’ve been sharing a lot about Becky lately, and we can’t believe she’s still waiting for her perfect match! 😟

This sweet girl is bursting with love to give, so we’re shining the spotlight on her as this week’s “Pet of the Week.” Let’s help Becky make her New Year’s resolution come true—to find a loving home, once and for all. ❤

Becky is the total package and a favorite among our staff and volunteers. With her playful antics, cuddly personality, and knack for giving the best hugs, it’s impossible not to fall for her. This gorgeous 3-year-old brindle beauty is one of our longest residents (the 10th, to be exact!), and we just know her perfect match is out there. Whether she’s zooming around the yard, going for a walk, or curling up on the couch for a movie marathon, Becky’s ready for it all.

Now, Becky does have her preferences. She’s not a fan of loud or chaotic environments, so noisy kiddos or super high-energy dogs aren’t her jam. But if you’re someone who loves a mix of fun adventures and peaceful, zen moments, Becky could be your ideal companion. Don’t just take our word for it—come meet her at MAC and see for yourself! 🐶

As “Pet of the Week,” Becky’s adoption fee is completely waived, and we’ll even send her home with a bundle of goodies to enjoy in her new digs. All she’s missing is you! So stop by MAC this week to meet this sweet girl! 🐾

Foster Fail (noun): When a foster parent falls head over paws for their temporary pet and ends up adopting them forever. It’s a “failure” in the best way possible! ❤

At MAC, the only thing we love more than a "Foster Fail" is getting adorable updates about these lucky pets! Here’s a special update we recently got:

"This year I lost my cat of almost 10 years. After moving out from my roommate I decided I wanted to give to the animal community some how and what better way then to foster!! I knew that eventually I would foster fail and that's how I wanted to get another kitty cat one day. I knew that by doing this, I would find the right connection in one of these babies.

My partner and I fostered 3 kittens before settling on our fails, which happened a lot faster than expected. Sal and Snuffle came to MAC with some pretty serious trauma. They came separately but ended up bonding with one another. I had an open home and was ready for my next fosters. MAC reached out to me and asked if I would be up for the task of taking on these sweet babies and my heart couldn't say no.

After day one I knew that Snuffle was going to be mine. She had a degloved tail but was so perfect in every way you wouldn't even notice this girl had this problem if you couldn't see it. These little guys were shy at first but after a few days came out of their little shells. I told my partner, a few days into fostering these two, to go ahead and put some thought into adopting Snuffle. After about a week he said, "I would rather have zero cats then just the one. I don't think I would feel good about separating these guys." Which made my little cat mom heart explode!!!

We apopted our babies right before thanksgiving and they have been the best! We renamed them to Artemis and Ares. Artemis had her tail amputated and she has healed up so well! My 7 year old dog just loves to watch them play and snuggle with them. Our home is so happy and full of life with these little guys! This year was really hard losing my best furiend and he will never be replaced but the little kittens have made my heart whole again and I couldn't be more grateful to MAC for matching me with them."

Have you ever "Foster Failed"? If so, we want to hear all about it! Feel free to submit your own MAC adoption story by clicking here ➡ https://bit.ly/MACHappyTail

We still have a handful of Fancy Pigeons looking for loving homes! 🕊

These guys and gals are more than ready to strut their stuff right into your heart, but owning a pigeon isn’t just about looking cool with your feathered sidekick—it’s about giving them the care they deserve. Here’s the lowdown on caring for these fabulous feathered friends:

+ Space: Pigeons need a clean, roomy enclosure or aviary with safe perches. A secure, well-ventilated space is essential for their comfort and health.

+ Diet: Along with a balanced diet of quality seeds, grains, and fresh veggies, pigeons also require grit—small rocks or pebbles that help with digestion. It’s a must-have for their tiny tummies!

+ Care: Regular cleaning of their habitat is key to keeping them happy and healthy. A clean environment means a healthier, more vibrant bird.

+ Vet Care: Just like dogs and cats, pigeons need regular check-ups to stay in tip-top shape. Finding an avian vet—a veterinarian specializing in birds—is crucial. They’ll help ensure your pigeon pal lives a long, happy life.

+ Love: Pigeons are social and can form strong bonds with their humans, but every bird is unique! While some enjoy being held and cuddled, others might prefer just hanging out nearby. Respect their personality and build trust at their pace.

Just a quick reminder: our adoption process is the same for all species and includes a thorough counseling session to ensure your new pet is the perfect fit for you and your family. While birds like our Fancy Pigeons have unique care needs, our knowledgeable team is here to guide you every step of the way and answer any questions. We also encourage potential adopters to do a little research in advance!

All adoptions are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, and we cannot place holds on animals. The adoption fee for Fancy Pigeons is $50 each.

In case you missed it, our adoption hours for 2025 have changed! We’re now open from 12 PM to 6 PM, Tuesday through Sunday, giving you even more time to meet these wonderful birds. 🥰

Temperatures are dropping... are you and your pets prepared? 🥶

As our area is getting ready to experience some below-freezing temperatures in the coming days, it’s important to make sure that you and your pets are well-prepared for the chilly weather. While we bundle up in layers, our furry friends rely on us to create a warm and safe environment for them.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

❄️ If you’re cold, they’re cold! Bring them inside! We want to remind folks who live within our jurisdiction, that it is the law to bring pets indoors when temperatures drop below 35° F.

❄️ For animals that are not able to come inside and will remain outside in the cold, it is essential that they have a properly insulated shelter to protect them from the elements. Avoid blankets and/or hay for warmth, as these items can potentially freeze when damp and do more harm than good. Instead, insulate with straw and make sure the structure is sound enough to shield from the wind, rain, or snow. Additionally, make sure they have access to non-frozen, and fresh, food and water at all times. Warm water is best - make sure there is no ice and it is not frozen solid.

❄️ Some sidewalk salt and antifreeze can damage paw pads and cause fatal effects, so limit exposure by avoiding walkways or areas that could be potentially coated with these chemicals. However, pet-safe types of antifreeze do exist. Instead of containing ethylene glycol, these versions of antifreeze contain propylene glycol—which has a much wider margin of safety. It is still best practice to keep pets out of any type of chemicals, even pet-safe antifreeze.

❄️ Critters who live outdoors, such as community cats, are known to seek shelter in warm, insulated areas, and unfortunately, this can commonly include car engines. This is why it’s a good idea to gently bang on the hood of your car before climbing in to scare away any critters before turning it on this time of year.

❄️ If you see a pet left outside with inadequate shelter, kindly let its owner know you're concerned for the pet's well-being. Some people do not realize their pets are vulnerable to colder weather; one conversation could teach them otherwise!

❄️ If you fear for an animal's safety, note its date, time, location, and what type of animal it is. Take a photo or video as evidence to have on hand if needed. For pets and individuals located in the cities of Chattanooga, Red Bank, and Lake Site, please call MAC at 423-305-6500 ext. 1 if you need to make a report. If you are not in these cities, you can report the info to your local animal control agency or police department.

❄️ Make sure you are stocked up on all of your pets favorites in case stores close unexpectedly, roads are iced in etc. Remember to have plenty of food, fresh water, treats, medications, and anything else your pet may consider important to them!

❄️If you come across an animal that may be experiencing hypothermia, the best thing to do is bring them indoors, wrap them in warm towels (use your dryer if able to), and get them to an emergency veterinarian ASAP for medical assistance.

❄️If you would like to “paw it forward”, the pets in our care at MAC could use some additional cozy blankets, high-value treats and enrichment items to help keep them happy and busy while they spend more time indoors during these colder months. These items can be dropped off at the Center at any time by placing them in one of our brown donation bins, which can be found on the left-hand side of either one of our main entrances. Items can also be shipped directly to MAC if you would rather order from one of our online Wish lists! You can view all of them by clicking here: https://bit.ly/DonateShelterSupplies

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on the incredible lives changed this year—thanks to YOU! Your generosity made it possible to provide care, comfort, and second chances to thousands of animals, including a sweet dog named Boone. ❤

Boone arrived at MAC on January 1st as a stray, suffering from painful skin issues, an ear infection, and relentless itching. Thanks to donors like you, we were able to give him the treatment he needed and helped him find a home in February. Sadly, life doesn’t always go as planned, and in September, Boone was returned to MAC through no fault of his own. While we were heartbroken for him, we welcomed him back with open arms.

Today, Boone is a happy, playful, and talkative pup who is eager to find a home for the new year ahead. As his first anniversary with MAC approaches, Boone’s story is a powerful reminder of how much your kindness makes possible. ❤

Your support provides daily care for homeless pets, food for puppies and kittens, vital medical treatments, and life-saving surgeries. Every gift, no matter the size, helps create brighter futures for animals like Boone.

As we look to 2025, we’re determined to do even more. Let’s end 2024 strong and continue to give second chances to pets who need us most. Make your tax-deductible year-end gift by midnight tonight and help us create brighter futures for pets like Boone. 🐾

And yes, Boone is available for adoption and would for you to stop by the Center to meet him! You can learn more about him by clicking the link in the comments down below. 🐶

Saving Animals, Helping People

Our vision is to eliminate animal overpopulation, cruelty, and neglect. To create a culture of compassionate care, community engagement and advocacy for animals by providing programs and education that support people and companion animals.

At the McKamey Animal Center we aspire to the five freedom principles that are generally recognized in the animal welfare community. The principles are: 1. Freedom from hunger or thirst – by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor 2. Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment 3. Freedom from pain, injury or disease – by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment 4. Freedom to express normal behavior – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s kind 5. Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
