Play Dog Excellent dog daycare, boarding, and training for the best dogs in Chattanooga, TN. Welcome to Play Dog eXcellent (PDX).

We have been providing services for the best dogs in the Chattanooga area, including boarding, dog daycare, training, seminars, workshops, and performance events since 2004. Known locally as the old skating rink, our 20,000 square-foot facility is a brick building on top of a hill sitting on more than four acres. We are proud members of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT), the Red

Bank Council of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, and we are active in the Chattanooga Dog Agility Club. We attend educational seminars as often as possible, and train and compete in dog sports including Rally, Freestyle, Flyball, Obedience, Tracking, Agility, Lure Coursing, Scentwork, and Herding.

We just wanted to take a moment and remind everyone of our modified business hours for next week:

🐾Tuesday, New Year's Eve🐾:
Regular hours for Daycare & Kennel, but no late pick-up. Please have all daycare dogs picked up by 6:00pm.

🐾Wednesday, New Year's Day🐾:
No Daycare or grooming, but we will be open for kennel pick-up & drop-offs from 6pm to 6:30pm.

❤️Dogs of Yore❤️
The down side to being in business for 20 years is that we’ve had to say goodbye to so many good dogs. The average lifespan for a dog is 10-13 years; a little shorter for giant breeds, a little longer for littles. We have a Rainbow Bridge display in the lobby. We used to keep individual pictures, but that got out of hand around 2018, and we ended up going to four digital displays. We also keep a Rainbow Bridge page on the web site. When I’m not in too fragile a mood, it’s good to go there and visit old friends who are waiting patiently for us to rejoin them. We thought this post might be a good place for everyone to put up a picture and maybe some memories if you can bear it.

We just wanted to take a moment and remind everyone of our modified business hours for next week:

Front office open for kennel pick-up and drop-off 9am to 11:30am
No daycare, grooming, or classes for the day

🎁Wednesday, Christmas Day🎁:
Front office CLOSED
We will still have staff in the kennel to take care of our holiday guests, but we will not have the front office open for pick-ups or drop-offs

We wanted to take a moment to thank Chattanooga Dog Agility Club for a very thoughtful gift we received this weekend!

Some of you may have noticed this beautiful plaque hanging up in the front lobby. This weekend PDX was presented this as a congratulations for 20 years in business. We were very surprised and touched by the wonderful gift! Your generosity and thoughtfulness are deeply appreciated. It’s not just the gift that matters, but the gesture that shows how much you care. Thank you for all the incredible support. We feel lucky to be connected with such an amazing group of people! Here’s to many more shared successes and cherished memories!

In honor of the 20th anniversary, we have a story time for everyone!

The Ghost of PDX👻:

We’ve had many, many encounters with a supernatural, but generally benign, presence over the years. Lee saw a hooded figure crossing the arena on the security camera when there was nobody else in the building. I was working late at the front desk one night when I heard a chair scraping back on the concrete floor in the kitchen. Lynette swears that someone was throwing little wadded up pieces of paper at her, but when she bent to pick them up, there was nothing there. Even before we had dogs staying overnight in the kennel, there were weird and inexplicable noises. Things disappear, then reappear months later in places where we’ve definitely looked. I have no idea who it is, but I figure he’s generally good natured and slightly bored. Back in the day, our building used to be a skating rink, so we figure maybe someone is just not ready to let go of the happy days of his youth quite yet.

It's picture time! 3 days, 291 dogs, and 6,501 shots later, 2024 Christmas pictures are done and almost done! We have them up on the lobby monitor and on our web site (links below). There was a strange kerfuffle with the photo cards getting abducted by aliens, but we'll try to get that rectified by Friday next week. In the meantime, thanks so much to Linda Fleury for being our honored guest photographer, to Tamara Kinzer for once again knocking it out of the park with her million-watt smile, to all the staff who pitched in with the running, staging, and consoling of the dogs, and to our many awesome customers for sharing them with us.

Here are some fun number facts about us since 2009!

When we started in 2004, we only had big dogs. Four dogs showed up the first day. Very soon, though, we had a 3 toy poodles (Killer, Terror, and Talulah) coming, and they stayed with us in the reception area since we didn’t have a dedicated space for them. Over time, we added fencing in the big yard so that we could divide dogs up by age, size, and play style, and we also added a separate room and outdoor area up front for littles. Now we have 4 areas for big dogs: “Tweeners” is for mid-size dogs, “The Forty” is for crazy adolescents, “The Pond” (named for Flounder and Trout) is for dogs who need a little extra attention, and “The Big Yard” for everyone else. Little Dog Land occasionally hosts large breed puppies who quickly graduate, but is mostly for the tiny dogs (under 20-ish pounds). Each yard has its own dedicated supervisor to make sure everybody stays safe and has fun.

We Just wanted to remind everyone that we will be CLOSED on Thursday for Thanksgiving. We blinked and it's already Thanksgiving week! We just wanted to let all of our students know what our plans were for this week as far as class goes.

🐾Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday classes will happen as normal. If you are unable to attend, please contact you instructor to talk about makeup options.

🐾Wednesday and Thursday classes are cancelled. The makeups will be held Wednesday 12/11 & Thursday 12/12.
