Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue

Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue ADOPT A PET - To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment.

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family (owner). MS Word and PDF versions of the application are also available for download. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations that vary, depending upon the age of the animal and th

e general health of the dog. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption donation helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal. We are committed to try to find the best home possible for each of our little ones so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness. We need COMPLETED applications, we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application. If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. WE PREFER TO ADOPT TO HOMES WITH CHILDREN ABOVE THE AGE OF 10 YEARS. EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE DEPENDING UPON THE ANIMAL AND HOW FAR THE POTENTIAL FAMILY IS LOCATED FROM THE FOSTER HOME. Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal). SCMR does not adopt to homes with Electric Fences*. Large aggressive dogs or predatory animals can easily get in to the yard to hurt, fight even injure dogs confined with this type of fence. In addition to injury or even death, dogs are more accessible to thieves. *To clarify, "Electric Fencing" is the electronic, wireless underground fence that keep dogs in but will not keep other animals out. Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We receive an average of over 2000 HITS A DAY and many emails! We will get back to you as soon as possible. ** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift'). Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'. Our dogs live in foster homes in several states. We are always in need of great foster homes. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit. When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download.

We still need to find a home for Birdie, we are running out of options for her, please share her info, and get the word out for her.

We thought we had a great home for Birdie, but she ended being returned, she was just to much for the family. She is quite the hyper girl, needing a secure fenced in yard to run and play. She likes to chew on anything that she can get a hold of! She is very playful, but can be a bit much for our small dogs in the foster home.

We are currently looking for a large breed dog rescue that may can take her. If anyone knows of a group that we could contact please let us know. Birdie is completely vetted and ready for a forever home. She just needs to be in an environment that can handle her energy until she is adopted. Or if anyone would like to adopt her, please fill out our online adoption application, that link is https://www.scmradoption.com/adoption-application

More info: She is six months old, and weighs about 40 pounds. She looked like a bird dog so we named her Birdie. We have since found out she's part Am Staff/Pointer/Dalmatian. The Dalmatian heritage makes her wildly active. She needs a place with a big fenced area with nothing in it she can destroy because her adult teeth are now coming in, she chews everything! Birdie needs an outdoorsman who knows how to train headstrong dogs. She is not mean...not a mean bone in her. Actually, she is very loving! But she is wild in her enthusiasms! And she LOVES to fetch!

Plus she is smart and trainable. She learned "Sit" and "Lie Down" in two days. "No" does not seem to compute yet, but she just needs time. Birdie has been evaluated by a behaviorist and does respond to a gentle leader which she wears all the time. She is trainable. She would be a great farm dog but needs to be enclosed in a fenced area. Birdie is definitely too strong for any small children. Ten or Eleven year old boys who would throw a ball for her would be ideal. Help us find Birdie a good home, one who will be willing to work with her and have patience with her puppyhood.

UPDATE- we are still in need of finding a soft place for Birdie to live. Other rescues that we have contacted are not able to help, and there is no one applying to adopt. Please help us to help Birdie......

Microchip company Save This Life has gone dark, and people are not able to contact them.

If your pet is chipped with Save This Life, the chip needs to be re-registered with another company. There are many out there that can be used.

This is something that has caught many off guard. Anyone that has an account with them, can apparently still log into the system and see their account. The issue is that when anyone trys to contact them with a chip number that is for a found dog/cat, they are not able to get to t he national data.

The most well known are Homeagain, and 24petwatch (not recommending them, just to share they are the more well known)

Anyone can search online about this topic, there are many veterinarian clinics/hospitals that are sharing this.

This would be an excellent time to update any microchipped pets to make sure the contact information is current.

Remember, if your pet has Save this life as a chip, it can be registered with another company, you DO NOT have to have the pet re-chipped.

OOPS..... we are so sorry, it appears that there were several adoption pictures left out of the video. It can be hard sometimes keeping track of them. We will get this corrected and repost soon

Because of copyright rules, we are not able to post the video direct to fb.

By going to youtube, you can also view the other videos that are posted. They show the many wonderful adoptions that we have done, and the loving memory of the ones that have passed away.

This years video is in honor of a great animal advocate and supporter of SCMR, Cheryl Rawls - thank you Cheryl for all you did for SCMR.

There is a new star in the heavens, SCMR is sad to share the passing of Zoey Grace. She was a very sweet girl, afraid of the world, but felt safe and loved in her foster home.

She had heart disease that, she was being treated for, that took a sad turn last night. She likely suffered a stroke and had fluid in her lungs. So her quality of life was not what she should have, so it was the kind thing to do to let her earn her angle wings.

Rest in Peace sweet Zoey, you are loved and missed by your family and friends at SCMR.
