Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue

Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue ADOPT A PET - To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment.

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family (owner). MS Word and PDF versions of the application are also available for download. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations that vary, depending upon the age of the animal and th

e general health of the dog. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption donation helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal. We are committed to try to find the best home possible for each of our little ones so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness. We need COMPLETED applications, we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application. If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. WE PREFER TO ADOPT TO HOMES WITH CHILDREN ABOVE THE AGE OF 10 YEARS. EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE DEPENDING UPON THE ANIMAL AND HOW FAR THE POTENTIAL FAMILY IS LOCATED FROM THE FOSTER HOME. Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal). SCMR does not adopt to homes with Electric Fences*. Large aggressive dogs or predatory animals can easily get in to the yard to hurt, fight even injure dogs confined with this type of fence. In addition to injury or even death, dogs are more accessible to thieves. *To clarify, "Electric Fencing" is the electronic, wireless underground fence that keep dogs in but will not keep other animals out. Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We receive an average of over 2000 HITS A DAY and many emails! We will get back to you as soon as possible. ** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift'). Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'. Our dogs live in foster homes in several states. We are always in need of great foster homes. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit. When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download.

UPDATE----great news, Birdie has been adopted and is now in her forever home, she has her own backyard that is fenced in to run off all of her energy, and a loving family to give her all the snuggles she wants!

Hello everyone, this is Birdie! And you would be right! She is not a Maltese!

SCMR wants to find her a loving, forever home, which ideally will be a home with a big fenced in yard, and possibly a young family that has children older than 10 years old to play with her and grow up together. Her adoption fee is $150, if interested, please fill out our online adoption application, that link is https://www.scmradoption.com/adoption-application

Please more about her below:
Birdie is about 39 pounds, and less than a year old, is high energy, but that is to be expected for a Coonhound or Birddog puppy, we are trying to get a DNA text run on her to confirm.

She is always excited and zooming around and being goofy! It's just so good to see her have fun.

She was dumped on Signal Mountain, TN, and got picked up by a Good Samaritan who couldn't keep her. She was about to get dumped again, but ended up at SCMR who couldn't let her get re-dumped!

She is real smart...has learned Sit and Lie Down and fetch! But that word NO is giving her a challenge, but she is a puppy, and just needs time to learn!

And listen to this...yes, she house trained! Yep! she knows what a p*e pad is for, but she does prefer the outdoors for personal business. She is just bursting with kisses and enthusiasm. Foster mom says she is a real sweetie when she can work off some of her energy and able to relax!

She is located in Chattanooga, TN, happy and waiting for her forever family to pick her up!

Please feel free to share her post!

Sadly, we share the passing of Oscar, a sweet boy that was adopted in 2010. He was loved by his family:

"We adopted Oscar, a young Maltese male, from Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue in March of 2010. He was unfailingly sweet, and he loved us, and his food, and his naps. He was always ready with a kiss, always a lover, never a fighter. We worked to give him the best life that a dog could hope for in return for all the love he gave us. He left us today, but we are grateful for the time and the love that he gave us, and we will remember."

Rest In please sweet one, your family and friends at SCMR miss you.

There was a new star in the heavens last night, it is with great heartbreak we share the passing of little Huckleberry. SCMR rescued him in May; it was learned that he needed PDA surgery (Patent Ductus Arteriosus). We had to wait on the surgery until he gained weight, he went in for the surgery Tuesday (7/9/24). Sadly he did not make it. We are heartbroken, as is the entire staff at the hospital. He was just 4 months old.

Huckleberry was a breeder surrender, as was his sister. They were both adopted and their forever family was waiting for his surgery. It goes without saying how heartbroken they are.

Rest in peace sweet Huckleberry, we had wanted more for you, we do know that you were loved and cherished for the short time we had you. You will be missed by your family and friends at SCMR.
