Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue

Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue ADOPT A PET - To be considered to adopt one of our babies, please fill out an APPLICATION. Adopting any animal takes a lot of commitment.

We are dedicated to rescuing and caring for Maltese and other toy breeds (as room allows) who are either rescued from shelters, found as strays, or no longer wanted by their family (owner). MS Word and PDF versions of the application are also available for download. We require an application, reference check, home visit, and adoption donations that vary, depending upon the age of the animal and th

e general health of the dog. Each dog has had all vaccinations, been dewormed, heartworm tested (and treated if necessary), dental (if needed), spay/neuter, and any other medical attention he/she needs. The adoption donation helps recover a PORTION of the money spent on each rescued animal. We are committed to try to find the best home possible for each of our little ones so that they don't end up in a similar situation down the road. Out-of-state adoptions are possible; however, the approved adoptive home is responsible for making the necessary arrangements to pick up their new little one. The new owner is required to help with the transportation of the dog though, as we will not ship them. Additionally all dogs requiring transportation must have a crate or seatbelt harness. We need COMPLETED applications, we cannot start the adoption approval process unless we have a fully completed application. If you do not supply complete information on your APPLICATION, we do not have time to track it all down. Vet contact information on your application is very important, please include it. PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE BIO OF ANY DOG IN WHICH YOU ARE INTERESTED SINCE THERE MAY BE ADOPTION RESTRICTIONS. WE PREFER TO ADOPT TO HOMES WITH CHILDREN ABOVE THE AGE OF 10 YEARS. EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE DEPENDING UPON THE ANIMAL AND HOW FAR THE POTENTIAL FAMILY IS LOCATED FROM THE FOSTER HOME. Homes with fenced yards are given preference to those without (all other things being equal). SCMR does not adopt to homes with Electric Fences*. Large aggressive dogs or predatory animals can easily get in to the yard to hurt, fight even injure dogs confined with this type of fence. In addition to injury or even death, dogs are more accessible to thieves. *To clarify, "Electric Fencing" is the electronic, wireless underground fence that keep dogs in but will not keep other animals out. Please understand that this is a volunteer effort and we all work full time in addition to doing rescue. Any help in speeding up the adoption process is appreciated. We receive an average of over 2000 HITS A DAY and many emails! We will get back to you as soon as possible. ** NOTE** We do NOT encourage giving pets as GIFTS. However, you may pay the adoption fee as a 'gift' for your special someone, but we will require an adoption application to be completed by the adopter (recipient of your 'gift'). Our dogs come to us from various sources including shelters. We do not always know the full history of the dog, some have come from abusive or neglectful situations. We will share as much information on the dogs as we can with 'approved prospective homes'. Our dogs live in foster homes in several states. We are always in need of great foster homes. We are sorry, but there is no "shelter" available for you to visit. When an application is approved, the home check goes well, and all vet references and application information checks out, a signed and notarized contract is required to finalize the adoption process. MS Word and PDF versions of our Adoption Contract are available for download.

Sadly, we share the passing of Oscar, a sweet boy that was adopted in 2010. He was loved by his family:

"We adopted Oscar, a young Maltese male, from Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue in March of 2010. He was unfailingly sweet, and he loved us, and his food, and his naps. He was always ready with a kiss, always a lover, never a fighter. We worked to give him the best life that a dog could hope for in return for all the love he gave us. He left us today, but we are grateful for the time and the love that he gave us, and we will remember."

Rest In please sweet one, your family and friends at SCMR miss you.

There was a new star in the heavens last night, it is with great heartbreak we share the passing of little Huckleberry. SCMR rescued him in May; it was learned that he needed PDA surgery (Patent Ductus Arteriosus). We had to wait on the surgery until he gained weight, he went in for the surgery Tuesday (7/9/24). Sadly he did not make it. We are heartbroken, as is the entire staff at the hospital. He was just 4 months old.

Huckleberry was a breeder surrender, as was his sister. They were both adopted and their forever family was waiting for his surgery. It goes without saying how heartbroken they are.

Rest in peace sweet Huckleberry, we had wanted more for you, we do know that you were loved and cherished for the short time we had you. You will be missed by your family and friends at SCMR.

SCMR sadly shares the passing of Dandy, a beloved family member who is missed very much. He passed away on June 12, his family did everything they could for their beloved little man.

"My heart is broken from loosing my Dandy Wednesday morning. He had been going down for a while but I didn’t expect it this soon. He was on pills for a heart murmur and his gall bladder for quite awhile. Dr. Mann, the veterinarian, was pretty sure he had a brain tumor. The prednisone helped a few days but the seizures started Tuesday night and they were awful. I would try to hold him but would have to lay him down because they were so bad. I had hoped he would go on his own when the time came. I promised him Tuesday night he would not have to go through another night or day like he was. I called the veterinarian’s office when they opened Wednesday morning and took him shortly after that. I stayed with him until the end and seeing how peaceful he was, I felt better about letting him go. My nephew is part owner of New Hope Funeral Home and furnished a precious baby casket for his burial. He said “Anything for Dandy.” Everyone knew how much I loved my Dandy and he loved me. A piece of equipment was brought here from a friend’s pool business to dig the grave. After he was picked up Thursday from the veterinarian’s office and taken to the funeral home, he was placed in the casket and covered with one of his blankets and his favorite toy was buried with him. The toy was just about worn out but it was his favorite. He had two dog beds full of toys and had never slept in his bed until the week before. He always slept with me but he would fall off the bed, or jump off after he was getting bad and I knew he didn’t need broken bones, so I put him in his bed. I loved him very much and will miss him but could not let him suffer. He is buried next to a brick planter by the carport, and yes, I do go out and talk to him often!! He loved to ride and didn’t miss many days going for a ride. I couldn’t have had a better companion for 11 years and 8 months."

Rest In Peace sweet Dandy, your family and friends at SCMR miss you.

From Benji's Mom:

It is with much sadness that we had to say goodbye to our beloved Benji.
Benji’s loyalty had no end. I am forever thankful for the love and joy he brought into my life. I miss him more than words can express. My heart aches with the loss of our sweet boy. But I take comfort in knowing that he no longer has to endure mental disarray and unimaginable pain. He is at peace now. RIP my precious little buddy until we meet again in heaven ..……

PSA - today (4/14/24) our page is getting hit with a lot of SPAM, please ignore, and not respond or contact them, They are not a part of SCMR; we do not support or promote them.

Very sorry for any concerns and worry, it really is aggravating that this happens. We do report them, and hide their posts once we see them.

We have also added some key phrases to help block them, and are hoping this will work.

PSA - please everyone, check to be sure microchip information is updated and current. There are so many success stories out there of pets and families be reunited because of the correct information listed for microchips.

Don't take for granted everything is correct - double check, it will only take a few minutes to ensure the info listed is correct. And also be sure to have the chip scanned for when visiting the doctors office, to make sure it is readable. They can fail - this will be a double safeguard.

Have a great day!
