As we gather to celebrate Independence Day with family and friends, let's not forget our furry companions! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and calm during the festivities:

🎇 Create a Safe Space: Make sure your pets have a quiet, comfortable place to retreat away from the noise.
🐶 Keep Them Indoors: Fireworks can be frightening for pets. Keep them indoors and secure windows and doors.
🐱 Update ID Tags: Ensure your pets' ID tags and microchip information are up to date, just in case they get scared and run off.
🐾 Avoid Fireworks: Never use fireworks around pets. They can cause severe burns and trauma.
🎆 Watch the BBQ: Be mindful of what your pets eat. Certain foods can be harmful to them.

Today marks Megan's seven-year anniversary at SAH, where she embarked on her veterinary medicine journey in 2017 as a Kennel Technician, responsible for caring for our overnight boarders and drop-offs. Over time, she expanded her skills by training as a Veterinary Assistant, aiding doctors, assisting with blood draws, and gathering client histories. Megan is also trained as an Anesthesiologist, overseeing patient monitoring during anesthesia, including blood pressure, ECG, and fluid administration, ensuring optimal patient care before and after surgery.

Recently, she was promoted to Lead Patient Care Coordinator. In this role, she trains our team in developing care plans, coordinating patient services, and collaborating with healthcare providers to guarantee patients receive necessary treatment. She also focuses on training our staff for efficiency and provides valuable resources for ongoing development.

Megan has a passion for animal phlebotomy and enjoys learning new skills in anesthesia. She is always up for a challenge when it comes to collecting a blood panel for diagnostics and has taken the job to keep up with our unopened and opened container log books to maintain accuracy. She is a Scuba Diver Advance Certified which allows her to dive as far as forty meters deep.

Gracie has finished her puppy vaccines! She came in every 3-4 weeks to booster her Distemper Parvo vaccine until the age of 16 weeks and received her Rabies at her final visit. She became an SAH graduate and gets to take home her diploma, her favorite pass time is being in mom's lap.

Shallowford Animal Hospital adheres to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines for puppy vaccination protocols. From 6 weeks old, puppies start to lose maternal immunity, making vaccinations crucial for developing their immunity.
Puppies should get their Distemper Parvo (DAPP) vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Their final set of DAPP and Rabies vaccinations will be administered at that point.

Each dog's lifestyle varies, and they may require additional non-core vaccines, such as the Bordetella vaccine. This vaccine is essential in preventing the spread of kennel cough and is often necessary for dogs attending daycare facilities or grooming services. Another non-core vaccine is the Leptosporisis vaccine. This vaccine provides protection against Leptosporisis disease, a disease that wildlife carry such as squirrels, rats, skunks and deer. An initial series of two vaccinations spaced 3 weeks apart is typically recommended, this series can be started at 12 weeks of age or later.

Your veterinarian will assess your puppy's lifestyle and discuss these vaccinations with you to help you decide what is best for your pet. If you want to schedule an appointment, call us at (423-892-6671 or text us through the PetDesk app.
