“Dr. Kolb what is the importance of ultrasounds and why do you enjoy them?!?”

Dr. Kolb’s response was: “Ultrasound is an important diagnostic tool because it allows us to see the architecture and structure of an organ and what it looks like on the inside. I’m able to find very small abnormalities within an organ that can be missed on X-rays, such as tumors.
In a sense, X-rays allow us to see the entire forest, but ultrasound allows us to look at the inside of each tree.”

Why are puppy vaccines important?

Protect from disease: Vaccines help puppies develop immunity to diseases like canine distemper, parvovirus, kennel cough, leptospirosis, and rabies

Prevent the spread of disease: Vaccinated puppies are less likely to pass diseases on to other animals
Less expensive than treatment: Preventing disease with vaccines is usually cheaper than treating it

How do puppy vaccines work?
Vaccines contain weakened versions of viruses and bacteria
The puppy’s immune system reacts to the antigens in the vaccine and produces antibodies
The puppy’s immune system learns to fight the disease

“So make sure ur puppy is vaccinated” - Freddy, Dr. Webb, & Trynity

Are you familiar with the term VCPR?
The Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship is crucial in veterinary care, both within the clinic and in the eyes of the law. This relationship enables us to provide personalized and informed treatment to pets, including prescribing treatments, vaccinations, and medications (including flea, tick, and heartworm prevention).

For more information on VCPR, visit the AVMA website at https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/veterinarian-client-patient-relationship-vcpr-faq

12/02/2024

In response to the increasing prevalence of leptospirosis infection in dogs, the American Animal Hospital Association, in agreement with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, has officially updated their core vaccination guidelines to include the Leptospirosis vaccine.
At Riverview Animal Hospital, we routinely vaccinate against Leptospirosis during our normal puppy visits as well as yearly adult dog booster appointments.

What is leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a bacterial organism that can infect a variety of animals, including pets as well as humans. It can cause serious disease, impacting the liver, kidneys, and other vital organs.

Where can my pet contract Leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is typically contracted by exposure to water and soil that has been contaminated with urine from infected wildlife. Rodents are a common carrier for the disease. Pets can contract the disease anywhere that an infected animal has come in contact with. This can include (but is not limited to) dog parks, walking trails, and even your own backyard.

How do I know if my dog has had the leptospirosis vaccine?
If you don’t have a copy of your pet's vaccine records, you can contact your vet to see if your pet is up to date on the vaccine, needs booster vaccines, or if they have never had the vaccine.

Is there a vaccine for cats?
There is no leptospirosis vaccine labeled for cats. While cats can still contract the disease and spread it to other animals, they are generally considered disease-resistant and don't often experience clinical signs (AVMA, 2024). https://www.avma.org/news/updated-guidance-canine-leptospirosis-reflects-better-understanding-disease

I have more questions about the leptospirosis vaccine for my dog
Your veterinary team would be happy to go over any questions you may have about the lepto vaccine, or any other vaccine!
